I recently got a new PS3 slim because the original slim I had took a big crap on me and doesn't run games any more. One problem might be the Blu Ray disc drive, which is extremely fragile.

When the disc is inserted into the drive, does the lens touch the disc as the disc is giong into the drive? The edges of the center where the disc is put into place are somewhat rough around the edges, so hopefully the lense does not touch. Can anyone tell me the answer?

WeaKeN says:
the actual lens shouldn't be touching the disc, there is a laser that comes out of the lens and reads the disc.

...that's what common sense tells me, but i could be wrong

You're right. The problem with 360's making the ring around the disk was when any kind of vibration hit the DVD with the driver reader. It would make a perfect circle around the disc.

The laser reads the disc and the reader stays in place. However, they can be very fragile on the PS3.

the lens should never touch the disc, if it is touching something is very wrong and you should act fast while still under warranty.

Thanks for the help. I never knew that lenses often read discs without touching the surface, but it still sounds a bit sketchy to me. Wish I could get a demonstration or more confirmation of the whole disc process and how the Blu-Ray drive operates.

I meant how the lasers work in terms of where they are positioned while reading. Or where that laser is exactly while the disc is being ejected and drove on. That stuff.

Mini Me, stop humping the laser. Okay...honest to God. Why don't you and the giant "laser" get a fricken room for God's sakes?
