Final Fantasy XIV, Totally Overhauled, Is Now Called A Realm Reborn
Jason Schreier
Square Enix is rebuilding Final Fantasy XIV in a project that has now been rebranded "A Realm Reborn," the publisher said today.

Previously called "Version 2.0," this will be the next incarnation of Square's massively multiplayer online game, which has been modified quite a bit since it first came out last year.

I played XIV for a few months after some major patches and eventually just gave up on it.

It's dead in the water before it launches, no matter how much they try to salvage it... unless they relaunch it as a free to play MMO. I think that would be their only chance to get players in again.

I wish there was another of getting the client instead of downloading. Square should set it up where you mail in your orignal disc from when the game first launched and they send you the new client.

Nice trailer, but doesn't really show much in the way of gameplay, lol. Still on the fence about this game.

"All the Square's horses and all the Enix' men Couldn't put FFXIV back together again."

Sorry, but this train left long time ago, the rail's been long disbanded, the station torn down.

It was? It seems to be quite a success story. It's had a solid fanbase for a decade, and it's been Square's most profitable entry in the series.

But regarding FFXIV, I'd give it a try if it went FTP. Especially on the PS3...that would be totally rad.

How much did you hate FFXI?

I loved XI but XIV is just a joke.

hope they spent all this time making the gameplay like that trailer.

haven't been able to find a better MMO since.

I have no opinion on it, as I haven't played it.

The only thing I didn't like about 11 was how grindy and not solo friendly it was but I heard that changed quite a bit in the later years. Loved what I played of it though. 14 was just a flat out travesty. I have a hard time imagining a fixed version of something so broken but I'd give it a spin if they want to let me check it out for free.

Wait...the vibe I'm getting from this post is that people who already own FFXIV have to purchase it all over again....is that right?

As long as it's still an MMO I'll wait for the next proper Final Fantasy game.

So cute that people who haven't played the game or only played the current version for a month or two can say it sucks. And no Garion current subscribers get the game for new version for free + discounted monthly fees and a special item to be named later.

Free to play wouldn't make a difference to me. In my experience, FTP is never free.

I played XI for 6 years on and off before eventually quitting for good. I loved the game way back when. sure, it wasn't solo friendly and required grinding, but it was FUN. then they killed it with Abyssea. I played XIV for a little bit back when it was free before the 2.0 overhaul. I didn't think it was so bad, just would've been better if I would've had people to play it with. haven't played since then, though. I'm actually hoping they can fix the game and make it fun like how XI was back in the day.

Doubt Square will ever reproduce the golden years of FFXI. I'll try it one day but i'm afraid if i end up liking it, one morning i will end up buried under my backlog.

But... it does pretty much suck? I mean come on, even the devs confirmed it was a carp release. Sure, there's super-defensive fan things for the game, but really it's not good. I'd rather play Rappellz.

I played for several months while it was sub-free and many of the design choices they made just killed the game. It didn't have any hook to it, the areas were barren, and most people just wanted to solo and ignored other players. It looked pretty... but that's about all it had going for it.

There are other MMOs out there that do it better with more of a "fun factor". Even after the major patches, 14 was a major letdown.
