Dark Souls Co-op Frustration!

For the past 3 weekends I have trying to co-op with my cousin and we've been almost completely unsuccessful. We had done a lot of co-op a few months back and now we wanted to start it again. For 2 weekends we tried and we would be able to see each other's summon signs but whenever we clicked and tried to summon, the other person wouldn't get the notification and then there would be a summon fail message. This continued to happen until we decided to remove each other from our friends list and then try. It worked and we summoned and helped each other with one of the bosses. After this it was back to the status quo and so far we've spent close to 15-20 hours but haven't been able to summon each other.

One very weird thing that happened was that some guy summoned me and then later summoned my cousin. Later I messaged him saying that he should summon both of us together. He summoned my cousin but tried to summon me at least 4-5 times and kept getting summon failed message. We are just unable to understand why we are unable to summon each other. We have been summoned in other people's worlds and we have summoned others in our worlds. Anyone know a solution?

No, but it's a blast co-op and the preferred way to play for many people. I have a few friends that will really only play the souls games with others. It's personal choice, and I don't know why people are giving this guy a hard time for asking such questions on the VGF when many regulars have also inquired about co-op play.

No offense, but your responses were pretty harsh towards someone simply asking for help.

Are you on 360 or PS3?

You probably have a restrictive network if both your cousin and the third party are having trouble summoning you. There are multiple methods for summoning on consoles. Is the person you're trying to summon settings their sign down multiple times? If they set it down too quickly you'll never be able to summon them. It rotates the servers too fast and it won't work.

Follow this:
Hollow sets down sign to be summoned by host.
If sign doesn't show within 30-60 seconds, hollow sets sign down again.
Once summoned, you're locked in playing with each other *UNLESS* you set your sign down multiple times again.

If you aren't having issues with signs disappearing, it's probably your network. In that case:

What kind of router do you have?

If you're on PS3 - Check your NAT type in your network settings. You need to have NAT 2.

If you're on 360, you need to have an open NAT and not a restrictive or moderate one.

Easiest way to do this is to put your console in the DMZ on your router. This usually fixes most issues that people have when playing with others.

You can find more information here:

And router specific information can be found here:

Capt - I am on PS3 and I have played with my cousin quite a few times earlier as well. And the method you describe is what we use (we had trouble initially and then someone had suggested this same thing a few months back). One of us sets down the sign while the other waits. If the sign doesn't show up in 30 seconds or so we put the sign again. The problem that I described above is unique which I have never faced in my 500+ hours of Dark Souls play. We also checked the NAT type and it says 2 for both of us. It just felt like we are just unable to summon each other due to some kind of a technical system conflict. This was kind of corroborated by the fact that this third guy was unable to summon us together but could easily summon us individually in his game.

We were engaging in jolly cooperation a couple of months back and then I was away for a few weeks and now we just can't summon each other at all.

I have a NETGEAR Wireless Router - N600 Dual Band Gigabit (WNDR3700). I will check out the DMZ thing you've mentioned above. Thanks for the info.

Definitely try the DMZ thing. Often it can be ports aren't opening up in your router's firewall that are blocking summoned players.

Dark Souls uses random ports I think, so the DMZ is the best route to take.

"Your first problem is thinking that Dark Souls is a co-op game"

Well...Seeing as how summoning other players into a game is a very prominent aspect, it's safe to say that it does contain co-op.

How about you stop trying to tell someone who's already put 500 hours into the game how to play it. I joined up with a friend every Friday-Saturday night for around 6-7 months and co-oped/PvP'd....Regardless of what the developers intentions are, we had a great time playing the game which should be the point of gaming in general, right?

Hope that Capt K's solutions work for you OP, sorry for the temper tantrum from DDustiNN.

Sars says:
you have to lay your sign down until it crosses servers, lay it down for 10 seconds and if your friend doesnt see it, so it again. Thats how me and my friends have to do it. it might take up to 5 minutes or 5 seconds it just depends on when it crosses there server

You were the one who was super buttsore about nothing.

Was just showing the OP that not all of us throw hissy fits over simple [warranted] questions.

Relax guys. I hope what Capt K had mentioned might solve the problem. Like I mentioned in my original post, I have co-oped with my cousin on numerous occasions and as such we know how to summon each other. It's just something we haven't ever seen before. Earlier if there was a problem we would still get the 'being summoned' message and then get the failed to create/join session. But now, the other person is not even getting the 'being summoned' message. We will try the DMZ solution next weekend.

Capt K - you are awesome! Your DMZ technique worked! Now I am easily able to co-op with my cousin. Thank you so much.

Dark Souls can be a Co-op? Local or online? I'm picking this game up once I'm done Mario, KoA and FO3
