Kin-foot says:
During Nintendo's Investor presentation yesterday, the company revealed that the 3DS is dominating all platforms globally for 2012. Its data also revealed that Sony's PS3 is leading so far this year from a home console standpoint.

According to the investor report the PS3 is the number one selling console in Europe currently ahead of the Xbox 360 and Wii. The Xbox 360 is leading in the US while the PS3 is again leading in Japan.

The total global sales for the PS3 put it at an estimated 2.27 million units year-to-date, with the Xbox 360 following behind it with an estimated 1.78 million units. The Nintendo Wii is straggling behind with 1.28 million units.

From the handheld standpoint, the 3DS is dominating with an estimated 2.49 million units globally YTD, and the PS Vita stands at an estimated 1.01 units (released end of February globally).

You can head on over to Nintendo's press site (via Nintendo Everything) to read the full report and check out the actual totals added up by Neogaf members.

Awesome, they still lost this generation to Nintendo. They won't make up that 30+ million deficit, Sony might get it down to 28 million after this year. So if sales matter, which they don't, buy a Wii.

So the console that has dropped in price from $600 to $250 is currently in the lead for 2012?

I love that the title of the thread is "Sony leads the world" but the article leads with "The 3DS is dominating", we all love our stuff.

"The total global sales for the PS3 put it at an estimated" Yeah its an estimate and regardless those are pathetic numbers across the board, as if anyone had any doubt left this Gen is over and fading fast. Obvious Nintendo and MSFT have jumped ship and all their resources are going into next gen, Sony not sure what they are doing.

It still costs more than the 360.

PS3 was also leading last year, and the year before that...until November rolled in.

They may finally have a shot on taking the precious second place come the New Year. I'm not sure what a price drop for the 360 will do tbh, the console market seems to be retracting some.

I almost commented about how the ps3 isn't selling the best this year, the 3DS is. But figured it was two different markets so it is hard to compare.

"They may finally have a shot on taking the precious second place come the New Year."

Feels like getting taken 253rd in the NFL draft.

Well, the Sony guys still hold their heads high that the PS2 still has more sales than the DS, so I figure it's just your bog-standard fanboyism at play.

Handheld = Home console? Well in the Vita's case (specs) maybe, definitely not the 3ds with its one stick and internals.

In reply to an earlier post on May 1, 2012 7:05:49 AM PDT
The 3DS has 2 sticks now....

Proof that Star Wars Kinect is not a console mover.

This is true. The DS came very close to breaking the ps2's record in sales, but it has slowed down a lot. Not sure if the DS will ever really break the record. Though the 3DS is on pace to break it.

In reply to an earlier post on May 1, 2012 7:08:36 AM PDT
as a add-on....lol. Not standard, but the specs still stand

I remember a bet you made...DS and Will will each break the PS2 record.

Of course if you go with the Wanda/Sonymite style of telling which sells better, the DS sold 150 million in 7 years (so 21.43 million per year) and the PS2 did 153 million in 11 years ( so 13.91 million per year). Of course this is irrelevant because it doesn't make Sony look like the best.

I think the PS3 actually has a few peak years left in it as it has yet to hit under $200 and the factors are numerous for adoption at that point. It has yet to really become the defacto choice for BD/Netflix streamer choice amongst the general market , and it will once it is in standalone player price territory.

Um, no. That wasn't me. I never thought the Wii would sell 150 million. I thought the DS had a great chance of doing so and it will be close. Last I checked the DS was only 2-3 million behind.
