So, I Have Cancer. Who Wants to Cook Meth?
August 9, 2012 by Greggy-IGN
Turns out, I have cancer -- Hodgkin's lymphoma -- and I felt like I should tell you. Weird, right?
I don't know. It's not like I think it's super-interesting and "OMG, you have to hear this," but by reading this, you're admitting to being an IGN fan. And like I always say on Podcast Beyond and Game Scoop!, by being an IGN fan, you're my friend. I've gone out of my way to break the news to my phone book friends (at least until the pizza got there last night), so this seems like another logical step in the process.
We're early with this thing. Uh, if you listened to the podcasts back in May, I actually complained about a lump on my neck and sore joints. That was this. The soreness went away before I made it to a doctor in May, but the bumps kept coming and new symptoms arose while I was on vacation in Chicago (fever, wobble-head-feeling). So, I booked a doctor's appointment for last Thursday, and it's been a whirlwind of biopsies, blood work and different offices.
Now, we've got a diagnosis, and we're working on tests to hone in on what stage I am and how we tackle it.
Chances are -- unless you're a hater from YouTube -- you're taking this worse than I am. No offense. I got kind of choked up reading the results of my first CT scan and learning just how prevalent this stuff appeared to be, but other than that, I'm just anxious to get going on chemo or whatever treatment I need. I know this won't kill me (doc says it's one of the most treatable cancers). I don't feel all that bad now, so I don't think I'm at a bad stage. And I don't plan on missing all that much of work.
I guess that's part of this post, too. I want you to know how blessed I am to work at IGN and how much it means to me to be here. If I start missing podcasts or writing less, I wouldn't have wanted you to think that I was slacking. I plan on being around as much as ever (I will have to bail on PAX. Sorry.), but we'll have to see what the journey has in store for me. Lord knows I can't let Altano host Up at Noon or I'll never get it back.
Until then, keep reading IGN, watching Up at Noon, and listening to Beyond and Scoop.
Oh, and the nurse who just called and set me up for a pulmonary exam took down my email and then went "Wait. Greg Miller?! Beyond! I'm a huge fan." That felt good.
