I'm looking for Historical Fiction books for my twelve year old daughter who reads at High School level. She read the Book Thief and loved it as well as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Mom would prefer books with little to no sexual content. Please help with suggestions.

Some of my favorite historical authors are Ann Rinaldi (http://www.amazon.com/Ann-Rinaldi/e/B000AQ4LZ4/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1355114847&sr=1-2-ent) and Celia Rees (http://www.amazon.com/Celia-Rees/e/B001HCYXR6/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1355114888&sr=1-2-ent). I also loved Laurie Halse Anderson's Fever 1793. I haven't read the Octavius Nothing books by MT Anderson, but it's another option. Other choices are Avi (http://www.amazon.com/Avi/e/B000AQ4WLM/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1355115104&sr=1-2-ent) as he has a number of historical fiction novels, and Karen Cushman (http://www.amazon.com/Karen-Cushman/e/B000AQ1OCM/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1355115650&sr=1-2-ent).

I'm a HS librarian and we own books by all these authors except Karen Cushman, who's a little bit young. While I absolutely adore Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (http://amzn.com/054762834X), it may be too mature for your daughter at this point, even though there's only sexual tension in the novel. I know it's difficult to find books that appeal to high-level readers without the mature content that tends to follow.

Best of luck, and I hope you're able to find something she likes.

I recommend the following: Charley Skedaddle, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Yearling, My Side of the Mountain - Trilogy, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and I'm sure you can ask any librarian or book store clerk in the section of the store where they sell these. Hope these help! :)

What about JANE EYRE?

Also, I haven't read these myself, but BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by Ruta Sepetys and REVOLUTION by Jennifer Donnelly are supposed to be very, very good historical fiction for YA audience. Again, since I haven't read them myself, I can't speak to their sexual content level, but I've never heard anyone mention it...

I highly recommend the following (which I have also read and enjoyed) and would readily recommend these clean reads to a 12-year-old who likes historical fiction.

I love The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare (she has another historical fiction called The Bronze Bow, which is also excellent), and so I'm backing up a previous users recommendation for this one.

Boston Jane: An Adventure by Jennifer L. Holm - The first book in a trilogy

Becoming Mary Mehan (Readers Circle) - by Jennifer Armstrong - this one contains two books

A Murder for Her Majesty by Beth Hilgartner

I second the recommendation for Ann Rinaldi's books. She has written numerous historical fictions, and I have yet to come across one with objectionable content.

I haven't read it yet, so I'm not completely sure if it has sex or not, but I bought a book called The Queen's Soprano that I heard was really good.

Revolution by Donnelly is excellent, but definitely has a main character who is engaged in some high risk behavior, and there is sexual tension. I absolutely loved it, but am not sure if this mom would find it suitable.

Is it romance in general that you want to stay away from, or sexual situations, or more graphic sexuality?

Thank You for all the Great idea's! It is really appreciated.
I want my daughter to be able to read the genre she loves but without the sex.
She will see a few of these on her kindle for Christmas.
Thanks Again!
