I'd like to shamelessly suggest you look at my recently published novel Advantage Disadvantage about a high school basketball prodigy who is surrounded by greedy and corrupt adults. Set in Chicago, the themes in the book include greed, loyalty, betrayal, love, teamwork, selfishness and sacrifice. It is told in a who-dun-it style with murerous twists and turns - from a referee's point of view. Read the first chapter on line by "looking inside the book" on Amazon:

Advantage Disadvantage

It is a book that could be read by a high schooler and his/her parents - resulting in deep conversations about the impurity of prep sports and the moral issues raised by the adults' behaviors.

I don't know if this counts as a "sports book," but Ruffian: Burning from the Start is an excellent story about an amazing racehorse. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, although I do love a good horse story.
