This has elements of free jazz, psychedelic, and experimental music. Very cool and harsh, abrasive. Another great example of why Zorn did a Morricone covers album. If you like Morricone for his wild, inventive musical adventures, then you will probably enjoy this. Reminds me a sometimes of Coletrane's Interstellar Space, also some of Sun Ras wilder pieces but different of course, always moody and dark. Buy this album and support these labels so they can keep digging these gems up and re-releasing them with wonderful bonus tracks....!

This LP is by jazz/noise conglomerate "Gruppo d'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza" who's most famous member is Ennio Morricone, usually on squawky-staccato trumpet. The un-famous members are a host of obscure Italian soundtrack affiliates and avant jazz experimentalists, including constant member - composer Egisto Macchi on various crazy instruments. They usually create Morricone patented-style giallo film scores with added space and avant jazz sensibilities, splashes of funk and general Sun Ra otherness, mostly rendered without melodies and sometimes without any musical boundaries at all, recording cheek-slaps and the like. Their best albums are the most accessible ones, usually featuring impossibly funky drummers and jazz freak outs. This album marries avant funk-jazz with atmospheric horror-effect suites.

Frenetic avant-jazz funk 'Seguita' sounds like outtakes from Mile Davis's 'On the Corner' recorded one year later in '72. Horror film incidental music is then followed by 'Evaporazioni', all stalking bass & evil jazz on top, Morricone himself squalling away perfectly on the trumpet. More creeping horror followed by eerie underwater wah-wah fest 'Urla Nel Nulla' which develops into another frenetic walking bass and then into the black lodge for the 3rd section. Avant-garde jazz territory again with 'Folle Folle' atmospherically thick, it brings to mind some of the live Bitches Brew performances. 'Evanescente' is upping the horror stakes with ominous impending deep bass grumbles and cacophonic scrapes w/ reverb. Dr Phibes (1971) edited by a murderer. This album could have been recorded in an condemned mental asylum. The players are trapped inside their instruments trying to get out. 'Sogno E Ritorno' is the sound of a U.F.O. landing in an abattoir. 'Ritorno All'inizio' finishes this super-original album in full circle avant-skronk mode.

Okay, so this soundtrack isn't for everyone, but if you're a fan of Free/Avant-Garde Jazz, consider adding this album to your catalog. Moreover, if you're a fan of John Zorn, you will really here in this album how Morricone's work was very influential to Zorn, more specifically his Naked City Group. For a soundtrack composed for an Italian 70s Thriller, I think, Morricone and this group of improvisers do an excellent job capturing the mood and tone of the movie with these particular pieces. Yeah, it might resemble some of that other fusion stuff from the early 70s, but I can't but help think of how limited the technology was back then for musicians, not to mention, how this particular genre/sound is still taking baby steps at this point in the realm of free jazz/music. I enjoy how this album will toss out different themes, styles, and phrasings from out of nowhere throughout the entire recording, only to leave you guessing as to what's next. Recommended.

Little nostalgia there, in the title...As with so many "legendary" avant-garde albums, Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura is notable for parts of what should be a whole. Morricone and his improv group created explorations of moods and narrative space through little more than texture and structure. Er, "structure" is used loosely here since the group made such loose use of it; the old standby of avant-garde music: drop the listener in and take 'im out without any discernible progression from "beginning" to "end." When the fine (if dated even by 1970s standards) jazz rhythm section kicks up some kind of groove, the textures (many of which bear a strong relation to those used by Miles Davis during the same period, through the use of wah-wah, echoplex, et al.) have something to coalesce around and the sounds become music, if only for 1 or 2 minutes. Some melodies or consistent rhythms might have picked this up at least to the level of "music", but instead "Paura's Cold Eyes of Fear" comes across as stillborn and not yet developed.
