4.0 out of 5 stars Give this album a chance, May 5, 2004
This review is from: g (Audio CD)
With "G" (1996), Gotthard show that they have developed musically. Even if their earlier albums have been good, this one is a lot better. It sure seems as Gotthard have put a decent amount of effort into the song writing and arrangements as well. "G" is an album for those who love great singing and melodic rock without a layer of cheese. Especially singer Steve Lee and guitar player Leo Leoni shine, and the rhythm section is really tight. The music business is not fair which Gotthard is a living proof of. This band hasn't made it big and it's a shame because I know that there are a lot od people out there who would love this melodic and skilful heavy metal/ hard rock band if they only knew about them. I highly recommend this solid and strong four star album (close to five stars) and if you chose to take a chance on this album, you will get groovy tunes like "Sister moon" & "make my day", speedy rockers by the name of "Moving on", "Hole in one", and "Ride on", heavy numbers such as "Fist in your face", a great cover of Dylan's "Mighty quinn", and of course a couple of slower ones in "One life, one soul" & "let it be".

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing melodic rock album from Gotthard, August 29, 2008
This review is from: g (Audio CD)
I don't think Swiss melodic rock masters Gotthard have ever released a bad album, but did they ever kick things up a notch with their third release, 1996's G. Their self-titled debut was good, and Dial Hard was even better, but G is a near-flawless melodic rock album.

I always struggle to adequately describe Gotthard, but in the end I settle for calling them the Swiss Bon Jovi. They've got heart, soul, class, and style, and their brand of radio-friendly melodic rock is always fun and rarely cheesy. G is a highly polished, good-time rock & roll album that is at times funky (their cover of Dylan's Mighty Quinn), bluesy (Sweet Little R&R), and always rockin' (the whole album). The guitar hooks are great, the melodies are infectious, and I just love Steve Lee's raspy voice. As soon as this album hits the CD player, it's like being invited to a party. If you like rock & roll and are capable of smiling, you're invited!

G remains one of Gotthard's best releases, and is one of my absolute favorite melodic rock albums. This is the kind of album that would appeal to a huge audience, if only mainstream radio would pay attention. At least the Swiss seem to get it. Over there everything Gotthard puts out hits multi-platinum status. Bottom line: If you like melodic rock; buy this album.

Edition Notes: The Japanese import version of G (which I was lucky enough to run across used) has an additional track, an absolutely blistering cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song. I almost never recommend these pricey Japanese imports, but in this case that one song makes it a worthwhile purchase. Unfortunately it does not have the cover of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" that the European version boasts.
