Poorly named,
This review is from: The Gate of Time (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm on a kick right now of reading time travel stories. With a title like "The Gate of Time," I thought this one would fit right in. Um, no. It's a book about alternate universes, not time travel. To an extent it's like time travel because the alternate reality that the main characters find is less advanced than ours. But the actual date is the same. The other thing that disappointed me about this book is that it was mostly a book about war. The main character falls through the "gate" during an air raid in WWII. He coincidentally falls into another world that is in the midst of its own world war. To be honest, not a whole lot of real plot takes place. There's fighting and running and being captured and escaping, but there's no point to any of it. The characters are not fleshed out very well. The most interesting part about this book is the concept of how different nations and languages would have developed if certain geographical changes had occurred. I don't know... If you like books about war just for the sake of war, then you'll love this book. If you want time travel, don't even pick it up.
