Edited by Peter Haining, who wrote many a book detailing the history of the Horror genre, this is one of his best books and one that will make a great find for the Fright fan.
With an introduction by Vincent Price and an Afterword by Christopher Lee,it's already hard to pass this up. Inside the book,Haining offers several rare short stories that inspired many classic horror films. The titles include: The Devil in a Convent The Lunatics Puritan Passions Phantom of the Opera(abridged and condensed) The Magician Freaks(Spurs) The Most Dangerous Game Dracula's Daughter(Dracula's Guest) All That Money can Buy The Body Snatcher The Beast With Five Fingers Beast Ftom 20,000 Fathoms(The Fog Horn) The Fly Black Sunday Incident at Owl Creek Die,Monster,Die(The Colour out of Space) The Skull(THe Skull of the Marquis De Sade) The Oblong Box The stories are all intriguing and many are genuine classics, though curiously the author does not offer the original titles, instead the films they inspired.Still, perhaps that's easier for some, even if it does become confusing. Some titles are delightful rarities like Spurs and Puritan Passions, and it's great to find them in such a compilation. It's also delightful to find so many rare stills to accompany the book as well offering a look at some forgotten films. Note:Monster of Terror is an alternate title for "Die,Monster Die",for anyone trying to remember that title. |
