A Listmania! list by H. Hok(Columbus, Georgia United States)
The list author says: "Saving money by going local for a year or two means I can afford some real perks to get me through school. I love reviewing other listmania lists (like lgadget's) for dorm ideas but for now this is what I needed for right here right now community college. Yay!
One of the biggest money savers is purchasing used books through Amazon. I have purchased books my local bookstore offered for hundreds of dollars (used!) for less then five dollars on Amazon."
"The best bookstand ever! Folds flat & goes into the backpack. In school you have a book at the other end of the desk you are reading from; while you write in the notebook in front of you. That setup makes it easy to write the problem down wrong or misread. This one simple item has really improved my accuracy & grades. I can't promote this enough."
"Just go ahead and record every lecture. You'll realize you only absorbed maybe 75% the first listen. This model features compatibility w the pc so you can burn to cd. Your mp3 player can't record nearly as well as this. I use a program called digital voice editor 3 with this I got for free somewhere and that program works better than the included software."
"Take pictures of those classroom models. Take pictures through the microscope. Take pictures of the art. Pictures are great notes and study material. I have this one and I love it! Don't forget a case to protect it that will also hold extra batteries because it is a big battery hog! I use a program called irfanview to label parts with words within the picture and that helps a lot."
"A netbook is considerably lighter and more portable then a laptop. Even though it seems extravagant to have both I get heavy use out of each. Get any you want but the smallest screen that is acceptable is 10 inches for a netbook. If I had to recommend one over the other between the laptop & netbook I would definitely recommend the smaller lighter netbook"
"Teachers want work done with one of the programs featured or teachers send out assignments w this program. You can't open .docx with Office 2003 version. There is also a student version for less the a third of the price."
"This is so cool. It's a regular pen that transmits to the little clip everything you write into an electronic copy & stores it until you get to your pc.(188p) The software included turns your handwriting into typed text. 4p manual is really easy to read. I love it."
"You will really need headphones if you use the school's library computer's; Library computer's don't have speakers & assignment's frequently are from videos. This Headphone has a soft silicone ring that wraps around any size/shape ear."
"Because it's more convenient. good thing you have the hub. I found I wanted this to transfer the lab pics from my camera immediately to a photo sharing site where the study group could label and identify. My pc has a card reader but the school pc's do not"
"a workhorse of a printer; the library isn't always open. You may want one with better reviews but just get one with a document feeder & a place to stick your thumb drive. You may find out your long lost buddy has already taken all the hard classes & you can have all their notes/work if you can make a copy right now & not have to borrow it overnight."
"basic school supplies are only on sale once a yr(fall) The rest of the yr notebooks, paper, pens, pencils are 4x-5x as much if you can find it stocked. You need a new notebook for every subject & every semester so just plan ahead a yr in advance. Or be pissed about spending $4 on a pack of paper you remember being $.50 in the fall"
"The best pencil sharpener ever. People still have this brand 20 years later. I just sharpen a whole pack of pencils ea quarter & place them all in a 3-ring binder pencil pouch. I always have something to write with. There is not always a sharpener in every classroom & the professor will shoot you dirty looks if you use it."
"Where do you find blank scantron forms in the middle of the night? No where. Imagine the horror when you realize you have all of the answers to the take-home perfect but you don't have it on the scantron so your teacher fails you."
"There will not always be a flat surface to write on. People steal these from me because they didn't realize how much they needed one; however, at least they don't take my laptop. (It's still stealing!) The low profile clip fits in the backpack with the books"
"Here is another item I really splurged on. I'm way more organized because of a workhorse 3-hole punch. Professor's handouts can be book thick. Everything in a 3ring binder is the easiest way to keep up & stay organized. No more lost homework. I like this model the best because mechanically it's the simplest & strongest"
"For when you absolutely positively must be awake in two hours and just can't risk oversleeping. There is another version if pink hearts aren't your style. Deafeningly loud and shakes your pillow to awaken"
"Because I didn't spend $40k on tuition I get my own internet enabled big screen lcd tv. I use this to watch a lot of videos related to my subject matter. Check your schools website & you may find the lectures are available to stream."
"A super cool charger for the wii remotes. No taking off the jacket or trying to get 2 points on the bottom to match up. Just lay it on there & a magnet holds it in place perfectly and charges up through the casing. I feel like this rechargeable battery was worth it but not the wii board recharger because this kills the warranty; a new remote is pretty cheap but a new board is $100"
