Essential reading for the 21st century Christian,
By a reader "a reader" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The golden cow: Materialism in the twentieth-century church (Paperback)
As Christians in the 21st century western world we tend to accept the social, cultural and economic world in which our church is ensconsed as normative. This colours how we interpret what Jesus and his followers taught about the God of Israel around 2 millenia ago. This book serves as a powerful readjustment for the 21st century Christian. Even though it was written about 25 years ago, what it has to say is even more relevant today than when it was at first written. My only regret about the book is that, by the author's own admission, it is not an empirical sociological study of materialism in our churches. Nevertheless, it hits hard with a message that we all need to hear. Non Christians, particularly those whose eyebrows are raised at some of the antics of supposedly "Christian" organisations and figures, will also find this book a worthwhile read.

I've read this book a number of times and purchased and given away a number of copies. Lots of good guidelines about money and giving including giving without trying to gain power because of the gift.
