About Backcountry

Backcountry.com is based in Park City, Utah, amidst the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, and mere minutes from the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Backcountry.com offers a wide array of the best gear on the market, including backpacking, camping, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, and more, all at competitive prices.

Backcountry.com was founded in 1996 by Jim Holland, two-time Olympic ski jumper, and John Bresee, former editor of Powder Magazine, with the purpose of providing outdoor adventure gear to the hardcore recreational athlete.

Holland and Bresee began the company without investment, intent on selling cool gear over the Web.  They found that if the content is good, the people will come. Nowadays, it succeeds because of the hard work of Utah athletes who answer phone calls, e-mail, and keep the company up to date with the latest gear.

Returns and Refunds

Not stoked with your gear? Looking to return it or make an exchange? No problem. If your new and unused gear just doesn’t fit your needs, we will issue you a full refund. If your gear fails, at anytime, we will also issue you a full credit. No questions asked.

You can return your new purchase at anytime after purchase
 o   Products must be in the condition you received them in and the original box and/or packaging.

We do accept used gear – as long as it is received within 90 days of purchase date – and we will issue a credit for full purchase price

Please understand that we cannot accept returns on climbing gear, food, or mounted skis.

If you are returning a kayak, return shipping costs can be $500 or more.

If we are responsible for return shipping and you are in the continental United States, we use UPS Ground. The time of delivery will vary from 3 to 7 business days depending on your location.

Skis: Size Wise

What you need to know when buying new planks!

Your ski size is largely determined by both your skiing ability and your preferred style of skiing. For example, an expert skier in Vermont will ski a far different ski than an expert in British Columbia. So take a look at our chart and explanations and find your perfect fit. Your weight also plays a large factor in finding the right ski. If you are either under or over average weight for your height consider downsizing or upsizing, respectively.


Skill Level Explanations

Pro: Excels on any terrain, on any snow condition. Enjoys high speeds.
Expert: Comfortable on any terrain and most snow conditions.
Intermediate: Comfortable on Blue trails, exploring Black trails.
Entry Level: Learning to ski Green and Blue trails.


Glossary of Technical Specifications

Tail:Shape of the back of your ski, such as flat, raised, and twin.
Turn Radius: The distance it takes to make a turn measured in meters.
Core Material: The materials that comprise the center of the ski. Primarily tuned woods and composites to determine the flex of the skis.
Top Sheet: The laminate on the top of the ski. Contributes to weight, durability, and aesthetics of graphics
Base: The density of the material on the bottom of the board, the harder it is the faster you go.
