Long time, no see!

Wow -

I can't believe I haven't posted here in over a year!  I have lots of good news saved up: my first two books are now in print in eleven foreign languages, and have made it onto state reading lists in at least twelve different states in the U.S. so far.  Also, I've been writing and traveling a ton.  My third novel for young adults, Zen and the Art of Faking It, just came out in October, and it's getting really good reviews.  Also, it is in a bunch of holiday catalogues, and is my third straight book to be a BookSense children's selection.  I've been visiting lots of schools, bookstores, and libraries in support of my books, and have been to five states during this school year so far: NY, NJ, PA, TX (3 times!), and AZ.  This month, I'll be adding OH and IL to the list.

Here's the biggest news of all: I quit my day job this week.  I loved teaching middle school, and really got a lot of joy from working with my students, but I just needed more time to write, tour, and be with my family.

So you can expect a steady stream of books from me, hopefully.  My next one will be published by Feiwel & Friends (a division of Macmillan) in May 2008.  It's about a fifth-grader whose imaginary friend starts taking over his life.

Have a great winter -

Hello? Is this thing on???

9:59 AM PDT, August 31, 2006
Hello, Amazon readers!

This is my very first Amazon blog post, so hopefully it will actually go out to people successfully.  I am nobody's idea of a computer whiz, so I guess we'll see what happens, right?

I suppose that if you are reading this, you already know that I'm the author of the young adult novel Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie.  My news for today is that my second young adult novel, Notes from the Midnight Driver, is now up on Amazon, and will probably hit bookstores within the next two weeks.

I'm very excited!  A totally impartial reviewer (well, OK, it was my mom) said that this new book is, and I quote, "Better than Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie!"

I mean, really, WOW!  Is that a gushing rave review, or what?

Come to think of it, I guess that depends on whether my mom actually liked Drums.  I think she did.  I mean, I'm pretty sure.  She said she did.

Then again, she also told me she was proud of me after every Little League game I ever played, even though my best batting skill was getting hit by the pitch.

Hmm . . .

Anyway, I am also traveling around the country a lot this year in order to meet my readers.  You can check out my calendar at my website, www.jordansonnenblick.com.  I update the calendar pretty much constantly, so you can trust the accuracy of what's there.  You can also email me through my site, which would be a cool way to let me know that this blog posting succeeded.

OK, gotta go eat post-lunch dessert with my daughter.  Today's treat is black cherry ice cream -- very nutritious.  You know, with the cherries and the milk in it, and all.

Have a great day -
Jordan

Bio

Here's my bio from the paperback version of _Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie_:

"Jordan Sonnenblick attended amazing schools in New York City. Then he went to an incredible Ivy League university and studied very, very hard there. However, due to his careful and well-planned course selection strategies, he emerged in 1991 with a fancy-looking diploma and a breathtaking lack of real-world skills or employability.

Thank goodness for Teach for America, a program which takes new college graduates, puts them through “teacher boot camp”, and places them in teaching positions at schools in teacher shortage areas around the country. Through TFA, Mr. Sonnenblick found his place in the grown-up world, teaching adolescents about the wonders and joys, the truth and beauty, of literature.

Mr. Sonnenblick always wanted to be a writer, too, so one day in 2003 he started in on the book that became Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie. This book was inspired by several aspects of the author’s real life: like Steven, the main character in the novel, he really plays the drums, he really went through an incredibly awkward year when he was 13, and he really was completely spastic around girls until right around his 21st birthday. The made-up parts of the book are all reflections of the author’s basic philosophy, which is that the world is a tough place, so you’d better be kind and laugh a lot.

Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie was published by Scholastic Press in 2005 to great acclaim, and was named to several Best of 2005 lists, including the ALA's Teens' Top Ten.

In October 2006, Scholastic will release Mr. Sonnenblick's second novel, Notes from the Midnight Driver, which is about drunk driving, lawn gnomes, divorced parents, a unique old man, and a beautiful girl with deadly hobbies.

Mr. Sonnenblick lives in Bethlehem, PA with the most supportive wife and lovable children he could ever imagine. Plus a lot of drums and guitars in the basement."

I think that pretty much sums it up.
