FEAR OF WRITING SUCCESS STORIES: Featured Writer #1 – Penelope Stowell

12:40 PM PDT, August 21, 2007, updated at 7:51 PM PDT, September 4, 2007

WHEN CONSIDERING A WRITING BOOK of this nature, you may find the book reviews helpful—and perhaps even motivational. But I'm guessing what you’d really like to know is:

“Will this method work for me?”

I conceived this Success Series to help potential readers consider that question more deeply.

Blog readers who already own the book might find this success story good impetus to dive back into the book, find a prompt, and start writing a story today.

The prompts are designed to be fun and to take the intimidation out of writing.

PENELOPE STOWELL is a good example of the myriad facets of fear of writing (i.e., not always just the plain ol’ writer’s block), and how the Fertile Material writing prompts from Fear of Writing can help blast you out of wherever you might be stuck.

Penelope first tried the Fertile Material in April 2001. She came to the Fear of Writing Clinic with a “fear of finishing.” She was already a prolific writer (and she’s an amazing speed typist!) but she was having trouble taking her stories to completion.
Now, fast forward several years. August 2005 saw the proud release of Penelope's first mainstream children's book, The Greatest Potatoes, which is available from Amazon.com.

In December 2005, The Greatest Potatoes was nominated for the Texas Library Association Bluebonnet Award.

Penelope is near legendary at Fear of Writing. She has attended the Fear of Writing Clinic, the Tantrick Writing Clinic and is a life-time member of the Santa Fe Fertile Material Writing Circle.

She was of enormous help to me during the Beta phase of my e-book project, and is herself the author of three e-books published through Fear of Writing: Street Legal, Horse Sense and If Wishes Were Horses. The stories in her e-books were written using Fertile Material prompts.

Penelope now lives in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where she works with famous horse trainers. She is currently writing an historical novel with the working title Monkey Simon.

From a recent email I received from Penelope:

“I keep running into people around here who could use a supportive writing group rather than a professionals-level critique group.  If I had ten seconds to knock together, I'd start up a Fertile Material Writing Circle for these folks. In fact, last week I brought a piece to my critique group that I wrote using a Fertile Material prompt. I brought the one about Dutchy and Elle McFeast and the whale, which I wrote from ‘Idiot on the Box.’ Got a good reception with it too!”

Bio

During the past two years I've lived in Canyon Lake (Texas), Taos & Chama (New Mexico) and now Jackson (Mississippi). I'm DONE with moving for now! But if someone gave me a chance to move back to Australia (where I lived for 25 years) I'd jump on it!

UPDATE - Dec. 2008 - Hmm, nobody has offered me a ticket to Australia (yet) ... but I did move from Mississippi to Ohio. Whew. What's next?
