Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen and two other books

12:14 AM PDT, October 18, 2007, updated at 12:46 AM PDT, October 18, 2007
Gosh, I'm slow to post here, aren't I? My apologies. I've been busy working on Superior Saturday, amongst other things.

Anyway, gather round folks! I have news. It's been reported in various industry publications, so I might as well post it here too: I will be writing two more novels set in the Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre. They will be published by Allen & Unwin in Australia and by HarperCollins US and HarperCollins UK.

The first, probably out in 2010, will be Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen, which is the story of the young woman who eventually became Chlorr of the Mask. It takes place about 320 years before the events in Sabriel. The second is untitled, and is a sequel of sorts to Abhorsen, taking place several years later. It should be out in 2011. Both 2010 and 2011 seem like a long way away but no doubt will sneak up on me horribly when I least expect it. Sometimes I think time is a practitioner of the secret Welsh martial art of Llap-Goch.

Before those two Old Kingdom books I have to finish The Keys to the Kingdom (I'm nearly done with Superior Saturday, so just Lord Sunday after that) and there will also be a standalone science fiction novel, called A Confusion of Princes, which should be out in 2009.

Speaking of science fiction, the background for A Confusion of Princes forms part of a massively multiplayer online game I've been secretly working on for the last three years with a small team of very talented programmers and artists (Hi Phil and Les). Called Imperial Galaxy, a portion of the game will be playable on Facebook from the end of November 2007 or thereabouts. If you want to be in on it, then ask to friend me on Facebook.com and you'll be sure to find out about the game down the track. I'm happy to electronically befriend any readers on Facebook, by the way, though I'm not very responsive to all the potential communications -- there's just not enough time.

Apart from all that, I have a story (for adults) coming out in Eclipse 1 edited by Jonathan Strahan (product insert won't work for some reason) this month.

But wait, there's more! Which I only just remembered. I'm going to be in the USA later this month, attending the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs amongst other things. But before that, in New York City, I will be appearing at an event with the great Australian authors Margo Lanagan, Scott Westerfeld, Justine Larbalestier and esteemed editor Jonathan Strahan at the fabulous Books of Wonder store in Manhattan on Saturday October 27th from 3.00pm-5.00pm Wondrous Event

And there might be some film news rather sooner than later, though now I've said that, heaven knows what will happen . . .

Wow, stumbled on this blog by accident when hunting for Abhorsen. Sabriel was good but I found Lirael to be truly excellent. Excited to see how this turns out, and even more excited now that the background for Chlorr is coming. Should be great. Keep up the good work & God bless! :)

Oh and I wanted to come to your book signing but I'm afraid I had no way to drive all the way up to SanFran. Not to mention that my set of Abhorsen books are at my old house in New Orleans, so I wouldn't have had anything for you to sign anyway. =(
Pwease come to Los Angeles! Puh-leeease? ^__^

I'm so excited for these books!

What I'm dying to know-- and I emailed Harper Collins without response-- is whether or not they will reprint the Old Kingdom Series in hardcover with the original US artwork??!

ahh! I didn't know this, I thought for sure the series was over. I'm beyond excited- though I do hate finding out this early. I like when I find out stuff like this when I'm randomly in borders so I can get it immediately. It will now bug me and make me incredibly impatient for 2 years. Plus, I just read the Sabriel movie news and almost peed my pants. Another thing to wait for. way to torture me. I didn't know the original director of Golden Compass left... it's too bad they didn't listen to him, those books were fantastic and would have made excellent movies if they had been done right. P.S. You're one of my favorite authors because your writing is fantastic but also because not many male writers have such strong and interesting female leads.

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed your books. Ever since my middle school teacher introduced me to Sabriel, I reread them every year. Thank you so much!

Did no one catch the hint/comment about the "film news"?? They're developing this series (at least the first book) to make as a movie! How cool is that?!?

I came across your amazing Abhorsen series this past year. Since then I have been raving about it to anyone and everyone who lends me their ear for a moment. I have become addicted to this series, finishing the third book in seven hours straight through the night till the dawn was creeping in my window. Thus, one can imagine my happiness as to hearing the fantastic news that this beloved series is not yet over. I can not wait for this year to pass, for 2010 I predict, is going to be an amazing year! I look forward to reading your new creations... and for more news on the Sabriel film! Thank you for all your hard work and your imagination!

PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. Allow someone to do Your Abhorsen Series as movies. There are many competent and willing directors and crews out there! To see your stories, your... idea of death and the bells and charter magic in action though, would be simply. simply. undeniably amazing. Your readers will thank you. ( maybe not all, but im hoping many!)
