3.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing Release, March 21, 2015
When I heard about this Legacy Release of Mary Poppins, I was thrilled. I had many expectations for this release and hoped to see some new and obscure material released.
The first CD of the Songs and Score is identical to the previous CD release. There is no new soundtrack material. I had really hoped to hear Bert's opening song and the extended version of "Let's go fly a Kite!" Some additional incidental music would have been nice too. I understand that some background score material was recorded, but deleted before the film premiered. I would have liked to have heard some of that music.
The second CD contains the LP version of the Overture which is great. I would have really enjoyed having a digitally restored LP version of the songs. Other Legacy editions are including songs from various obscure albums and yet the alternate Mary Poppins record with Marni Nixion and Bill Lee was completely excluded. I liked the idea of the Lost Chord series, and it was great to hear many of the songs that have been mentioned, but not always recorded. The orchestrations were decent, but they did not match Irwin Kostal's style. They really should have hired Larry Blank to create the missing orchestral material. He was a very close friend of Kostal and being a professional in both Broadway and Film, he would have been a much better choice to "recreate" the missing orchestral material.
The story meetings should have been omitted completely. I am not sure why they were included, as the discussions sound dry and dull to me. I had seen SAVING MISTER BANKS, and I had hoped to make some interesting comparisons, however none of the *conflict* depicted in the film can be heard at all. One of the song writers even stated that P.L. Travers was difficult to work with. As I listener of those story meetings, I was not hearing this 'difficulty' as described by Richard Sherman.
I have hopes that Disney will release a more comprehensive CD edition of the songs and score which includes the Songs (LP and film versions plus the Marni Nixion recordings) and a more complete version of the orchestral score.

This recording of ROBERTA is the first authentic recording ever to be released. To the best of my knowledge, no other recording of this score uses original arrangements. I feel this release is on the same level as SITTING PRETTY and SHOWBOAT. The actors/singers speak and sing the show quite well. The dialogue helps the listener understand how the songs fit into the story. I would highly recommend buying this CD set. The liner notes gives the history of the show and goes into detail about the orchestral materials. The bonus material is great to have and sounds just as good as the rest of the score.
I hope this recording will lead to other Kern scores being preserved on disc.

It's a decent recording. If you are fan of the show, then get this. The album credits Ralph Burns as the orchestrator which is correct, but he had help from Larry Wilcox. It is my understanding that Wilcox made some fixes for the production recorded here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice collection of instrumental pieces., May 4, 2013

This CD has a lot of stuff instrumental works on it. The song: "Swanee" by George Gershwin had the claim that the original arrangement was recorded for the first time (Robert Russell Bennett). I had understood that the song was recorded several years ago with an orchestration by Frank Saddler. (That CD is called BROADWAY SHOWSTOPPERS.)
A lot of curious pieces are on here that I have not heard of, but they fun to listen to. Some of those composers were arrangers on Broadway in the early 1900s through the 1930s.
The quality of the recordings are excellent. The booklet is great about giving some biographical information on many of the composers. There is also a list of orchestral credits.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent re-issue, December 17, 2010
I wanted to give my impressions of this current CD, and clear up a few things.
I think the quality of sound varies depending on which track you listen to. Some of the songs are clearly from the original LP album master, other tracks come from the original master recordings.
Most of the songs used on this CD are the versions heard on the original LP. The sound quality is excellent on some songs, and this makes me wonder if the original session recordings were used, but edited down to the LP length. It is possible that the two channel LP master tape was primarily used and cleaned up, but the liner notes in the CD do not give any information on the remastering process.
I now want to clear up some information: One of the reviewers stated that the original session recordings were gone. Well, yes and no. The actual film stock that the session recordings existed on has deteriorated several years ago. 20th Century Fox had hired Nick Redman to sort through the vaults, and see if any of the recordings could be salvaged. There were hopes of possibly releasing some of the recordings. Many original film recordings had been found. Among the many recordings was THE SOUND OF MUSIC. During March and April 1994, a crew was assembled, and the music was completely reconstructed and remixed from the original 35mm masters. Most of the material was saved. A couple of songs with Julie Andrews' voice were not completely saved because those particular voice tracks would not go through the digitizer. Those voice stems had deteriorated.
Later in 1994 a CD was issued that contained all the songs (that were saved), and several orchestral cues. Later on, a two-disc was issued which used alternate songs restored from the 35mm masters and the LP master.
I think the contents of the 1994 "Gold" CD should have been re-issued. I would like to know why Sony keeps using the LP master when a better reconstruction not only exists, but has been completed and previously issued.
