4.0 out of 5 stars Centrist Presentation, Readable for a Textbook, February 15, 2005
Patterson gives a good overview of the formation of the US government and the objectives and innovations of the system. His presentation is balanced, without an obvious agenda or bias. The style is very readable for a text, which many students should appreciate. A good text for an intoductry course. It doesn't contain many insights into problems facing the system, and steers clear of criticism in some instances where it might seem relevant. However, overall I would recommend this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Complete Stat Resource Available, January 2, 2005
This is the best statistical resource I have seen. It is comprehensive; you will find just about anything you're looking for in here. All of the traditional statistics plus many of the analytical stats developed by the Society of American Baseball Research to determine more accurate measures of a players actual impact on winning games. It also includes a number of interesting articles on the evolution of the game, which anyone with an interest in baseball history will find invaluable. This reference tool is well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Perspective on the Craft of Writing, January 2, 2005
This review is from: On Writing (Mass Market Paperback)
Very enjoyable reading. King gives an interesting perspective on the crraft of writing. Part memoir and part how-to guide. This is highly recommended for King fans, for those interested in getting started in writing or for those who have done some writing already. King doesn't have the respect of many academics, but his perspective on writing is worth reading because he is a successful writer and solid pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable for Sports Fans or Managers, December 31, 2004
This is an enjoyable read, whether you are a baseball fan or not. If you ever have to evaluate performance in any field, or if you are ever evaluated yourself (and this includes virtually all of us), then you should find this book fascinating. Lewis gives us an inside look at the evaluation of baseball talent, and shows us the many ways that people are under or over valued. Just imaging the difficulty of evaluating performance in fields where there are not dozens of objective statistics. How far off are your supervisors evaluations of you, or your evaluations of your subordinates. Raises interesting questions about defining the goals of an organization and analyzing the actions that further their achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Primer on Political Maneuvering, December 31, 2004
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Even though this is about water policy, the stories told by Reisner should be required reading for anyone who wants to go into business or politics. He does an incredible job of portraying how things actually get decided on and done. This is fascinating reading, really enjoyable, and it teaches us how politics in this country is really works. It is very well-written; it is as enjoyable to read as any fiction, yet the author does not compromise the integrity of the facts. He delivers a lot of heavy and disturbing material very professionally.

Some might consider Reisner's concerns over water issues to be alarmist. I suppose we will find out about that aspect in the future. Even if his concerns over water issues turn out to be far off base, there is still more than enough worthwhile material here for thorough study of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Ride with the Stones, December 31, 2004
This is by far the best book on the Stones of the many that I've read. Covers only the 1969 tour, but it paints a vivid picture of what life was like with the Stones in this period. Very well written by Booth, who was able to get as far inside the Stones circle as any writer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great research, well agrued, but biased, December 31, 2004
As mentioned in other reviews, only one side of the story is presented. Even on the side for Christ, only evangelicals are interviewed. The evidence presented is compelling. However, because Strobel uses the analogy of presenting eveidence as in a court case, a counter-argument seems to be called for. By including the viewpoint of skeptics he might have made his case stronger. On the other hand, he has created a successful series of titles based on this format, so...
