3.0 out of 5 stars Book - Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant, February 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It was a fairly good book; easy page turner. I have always loved Cary Grant; unfortunately, now I'm not as sure. I'm assuming his very early life in London was as traumatic as was written. If it was, I guess some of his later life can be explained. I'm not really sure since his previous wife, Betsy Drake, was written in this book as to have gone along with Drake's habit, and their marriage didn't last. Since I have been such a fan of Cary Grant, I'll have to research his life further to make my final decision.

2.0 out of 5 stars Book - In Between Days, February 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In Between Days (Kindle Edition)
I have been reading books (some probably before my recommended age) all my life. I'm trying to remember some that I must say I didn't like any of the characters in it. Usually only the "really bad guys" were unlikable. Maybe in this book, there were no really bad guys. It was an easy page turner and most of the characters were people I have known in my life - I said most. However, all the major ones didn't seem to have that "good" feeling where you really liked them. They were all very sad. With a lot of very sad people roaming about, how can you enjoy a book about them? I chose this book because my newspaper wrote it was their "Year's Pick" for reading. So sorry I didn't care for it and I would never recommend it to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonocaddie GPS Golf, October 28, 2007
I wrote a review on this product when it first hit the market over a year ago. Not sure where that review went but I've got an update. The product initially impressed me because of its ease of use, capability - it stores 20 courses, and the no-membership/download costs. When I first got my Sonocaddie I had to input my own data, available local courses were lacking. Well, in 11 months hundreds of courses all over the US have become available for download. When I'm on the course with my playing partners everyone checks with me for distance to the pin/green. The accuracy is great, wish my ball striking ability were only half as good! After almost 11 months of near flawless performance my Sonocaddie went to a dark screen with the application features barely visible. Initially I assumed a battery issue; but switching to fresh batteries didn't fix my problem. After describing my problem to DENNCO, the US Distributor, they instructed me to ship my Sonocaddie to them, insured, for there evaluation. I was elated when I received a new replacement unit in less than 12 days. It is clear DENNCO understands customer service and stands by their product's 1 year warranty. I highly recommended this item almost a year ago and now I recommend both the product and its US Supplier. Ro

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use Golf GPS Rangefinder - No Subscription Needed, December 8, 2006
I just purchased a SONOCADDIE GPS Rangefinder and after going to their website to download my favorite courses, the only thing I was able to download were the holes with handicap and para ratings. So, that meant I was forced to go to a course and attempt to record signicant course landmarks as well as "record" front and back locations on each green. Turns out this process was a whole lot easier than I thought it would be. After posting "records" for about 3 holes, I circled back and was really impressed with the system accuracy, speed, reliablity and readability of this cell phone sized unit. Some other key features include the ability to hold settings for 20 courses. You can find other GPS units that my be easier to read or include more data relative to scoring or just recording your round for your foursome, but I don't think you will find one that is any simpler to operate. Not having an annual subscription was another plus for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars What music background does your reviewer have???, February 15, 2006
This review is from: How Do You Like Me Now (Audio CD)
Your reviewer, Bob Allen, who I believe has reviewed some other of Toby Keith's albums previously, must have a tin ear and has never written a song in his life. Saying Keith is neither a "remarkable singer nor songwriter" is ludicrous. He also refers to him as a "journeyman." Keith has been writing songs and singing them for more than 30 years. Obviously Allen has no liking nor appreciation for country music; he'd be better writing reviews for cook books. Those who know - really know - country music consider him a master songwriter and the voice is magic, whether he is singing a love ballad or one of his "in your face" songs that have a meaning for those who have lived, loved, laughed, and cried in our lifetime. He has paid his dues in his lifetime with his music and songwriting, being shifted from label to label because of the Nashville exercise of label taking over another label. But the people who have known him have gone to bat for him and he has never forgotten that. He finally has the following and the clout to start his own record label. He did it "his way" but without stepping on the people who helped him along the way. Those folks are still with him. I just happen to own every album he ever cut and there isn't anything on any of them I don't like. Over the years, I can hear the differences in his voice - always great - but now coming of age. Unlike many artists, he writes or co-writes 85% or more of his songs. I give this album 5 stars, just like I'd give 5 stars to all his albums to date. Bob Allen - Check out cut 10 "The Critic" on Toby's "Shock'n Y'all." Sounds familiar to me!! Sydney in San Antonio

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book - not just for children!, June 28, 2004
This review is from: Beautiful Joe (Hardcover)
I had never heard of this book or read it as a child. I found a copy of the 1930 hardback version in an antique shop in the midwest last summer and purchased it just because the cover illustration looked strikingly like a dog my husband and I had recently adopted from a shelter. When I read the book, I was captivated and astonished. You see, my dog (a lovely fawn-colored pit bull) was rescued after having her ears crudely chopped off and burned. She's been a member of our family for nearly two years, and is an obedient, loving companion. The story told from the perspective of the dog reinforces to me that animals are feeling, thinking creatures, put on this earth for humans to care for and give a voice to. I've since become a great advocate for the plight of the American Pit Bull Terrier, which used to be the symbol of American with its courage, loyalty, and tenacity. Unfortunately in this day and age, irresponsible and unfeeling people have tarnished their image greatly by trying to turn them into guard dogs (which they are not) and reaping profits from fighting them. Then, they are usually discarded. Children would do well to read this book to help them learn about kindness to all creatures; adults would enjoy it as well. Because of this book, the name on our dog's AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certificate and UKC LP registration proudly reads, "Ostroms' Beautiful Barley." I'm looking forward to reading the sequel and happy to have found, through these reviews, where the "real" Beautiful Joe lived and is buried.
