3.0 out of 5 stars 3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur, December 8, 2011
POST-PRODUCTION 3D (converted from 2D to 3D)

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 23 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer but 6 of them are very quick. 2 made it to 15% and 5 more at 25%.

The 3D looked somewhat inconsistent from scene to scene and it lacked the crisp details normally associated with animated 3D. This is partly due to originally being a 2D stop-motion film vs. a computer generated animation like most. The lack of colors and the many dark scenes it includes also hampered the 3D.

Active Glasses Users: I detected 19 instances of crosstalk but realistically only 5 times the ghosting was easily noticeable. (on my system)

MY 3D RATING = GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different. What I see at 25% you may see at 15% or 35%. To fully realize how far something is out of the screen for you, pause on an effect and direct a partner with an extended finger to the tip of what you are seeing. You may be surprised.

POST-PRODUCTION 3D (converted from 2D to 3D)

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 12 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. During the opening dialog and title there are 7+ CG effects near 25%. Also, the ending credits have glowing embers floating to a maximum of 25%.

The cardboard cutout syndrome is fairly obvious in this title. Many scenes appear to have only 1 to 3 depths with the background or sides starkly flat. Usually when the syndrome wasn't apparent, the 3D lacked depth and crispness. I don't believe this movie was ever intended to be converted into 3D but if it was, they should not admit it.

On a positive note, there were zero of the single instance 3D flaws normally seen in a conversion (that I noticed). The sandmen scenes were great even though the 3D was about the same as in the rest of the movie. Even with its flaws, the 3D adds to the viewing experience of this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur, November 28, 2011
My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 173 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. 22 made it to 15%, 19 out to 20%, 36 more at 25% and 2, 30-35%. That's a lot of OOS effects. In addition there are quite a few quick 25-40% effects piled near the title scenes but the 3D in them is a somewhat flawed. However, very few 3D flaws elsewhere in this film. I would have to say my favorite effect is the baby juggling / drooling sequence around 30% approximately 10 minutes into the film.

This movie earned a 4 way tie for the # 2 position on my shelf. For 3D quality and humor, it ranks right up there with the 3 other animated greats, Open Season, Rio and Ice Age.

*** Another Must see ***
*** Add it to your list ***

MY 3D RATING = EXCELLENT (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

4.0 out of 5 stars 3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur, November 26, 2011

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

Not counting the shallower effects, there are about 64 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer but approximately half of them are very quick. 2 effects made it to 20%, 11 around 25% and 5 more at 30%. The majority of the effects are after the first half hour of the film.
Honorable mention effects included swords being thrust through a door (20%) or being pointed towards you (30% 3 times), a boney hand (30%), flakes falling from an explosion (25%), and the grumpy monkey (25%). There is also a real nice 10% sequence involving a water drop.

The 3D in itself is very good but Disney did struggle with scene framing, focusing and lighting, to best benefit a 3D film. I should clarify that the focusing issue is just the blurring of foreground objects to draw the viewers' attention to where the director wants it. This tactic has been used a lot in recent years for normal movies but it is just not conducive to a good 3D viewing experience.

Don't get me wrong, this is a worthy addition to any 3D collection. 3D cartoons are easy to produce but for real life 3D, there is a definite learning curve.

*** Jack and the gang are great in 3D ***

MY 3D RATING = VERY GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

2.0 out of 5 stars 3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur, November 25, 2011
My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

This review is for the 3D blu-ray version - The old 2001 Slingshot 3D DVD for picture tube TVs was actually better.

Like many of the IMAX films the 3D is over done. In this film it is just too big of a difference in the right and left views (excess parallax). More sensitive people may feel eye strain or get headaches from watching this movie. The excess may even cause some ghosting on active glasses systems.

I counted 4 out of screen effects. There are 2 out of screen effects that extend 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. One at 20% and 1 at 25%.

If the 3D in other IMAX films were OK for you, this one might be.

MY 3D RATING = FAIR (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

POST-PRODUCTION 3D (converted from 2D to 3D)

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 51 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer and another 14 ranging from 15% to 25%. Most of the 25% effects are very quick though.

The quality of the in-screen 3D is excellent for a post-production (FAKE 3D) film. This movie was never intended to be in 3D evident by the camera angles and scene framing but the conversion only had one easily noticeable flaw and the cardboard cut-out syndrome seemed somewhat less evident than in other converted films. I'm not a fan of 2D to 3D conversions but you could do much worse.

*** Everything considered I'm stretching ***
*** this one to a 4 star/very good ***

MY 3D RATING = VERY GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

POST-PRODUCTION 3D (converted from 2D to 3D)

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

Not counting shallow effects, 18 out of screen effects extend 5% of the way, from the screen to the viewer and 6 made it out to 10%. 3 OOS effects extended to 20%. My favorite is a dragon's head snapping its mouth closed at about 21:00 minutes.

The quality of the in screen 3D is real good for a post-production (FAKE) 3D film. But it should be, they spent a small fortune having IMAX oversee 12 companies doing the 2D to 3D conversion process. However, as with all converted 3D films there are minor flaws and the cardboard cutout effect. This film also had over done 3D in at least 5 scenes and 5 more easily visible 3D flaws.

I hope this (the ultimate effort of conversion) finally convinces the 3D industry to just use a 3D camera setup when shooting. They could have had an excellent film instead of one in the middle of the pack.

*** Three and a half stars ***

MY 3D RATING = GOOD to VERY GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

POST-PRODUCTION 3D (converted from 2D to 3D)

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

ONLY 2 out of screen effects extend 5% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. Other than that, there were about 9 more effects at LESS than 5%.

The quality of the in screen 3D is about the same as watching a 2D version and just letting your TV do the conversion to 3D. Even among the post-production (FAKE) 3D films, this one ranks below average.

MY 3D RATING = FAIR (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Not counting shallow effects, there are about 16 out of screen effects that extend 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer, 1 effect at 15% and a few blurry rain drops at 20%.

The quality of the in screen 3D is good to very good but...

PIXAR DOES NOT WANT (or try to create) OOS EFFECTS.
Children may enjoy Pixar's in-screen 3D films, but if Pixar wants to ignore half of the 3D technology, they should only charge half as much.

*** Disappointing OOS 3D ***
