3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., March 26, 2015

The characters in this book are so superficial I almost gave up without finishing this book. It's very annoying to me when the author, who is Australian, creates American characters who are not at all American. Cat's cell phone is "flat" not dead, she can't decide on a jumper, ie a sweater, the elevator is a lift...you see where I'm going. Cat can't be courteous and well spoken, but rather blurts out "sure" in response to any question in between being rude to people so she can answer her cellphone. Her fiancé calls her "honey" at least three times on any page where his character is present in addition to getting the prize for the most one dimensional character ever created in fiction. Despite all its many many flaws the story line was intriguing and this had the potential to be a much better book. If there was an editor, he or she should find another career -ebooks are becoming famous for their poor or no editing and this book is a classic example of the downhill trend in quality found in ebooks.

Another reviewer referred to this book as a poor man's "Gone Girl" - don't laugh, it's true! The main character is just a big ol' pile of crazy and you find yourself wondering why everyone puts up with her, including her own family. I personally wanted to slap her at various points in the story. The story is overly wordy to the point that I found myself skimming entire chapters and really not missing a thing. This is where a good editor could have improved this book immensely.

This story resonated with me, having heard stories from my own grandmother and mother-in-law told in that plain, unadorned, no-nonsense tone of voice. The generation of people who lived in this time took heartache and tragedy in stride as well as the simple joys of home and family. The author's work is a wonderful tribute to her grandmother's strength and resilience.

A provocative concept but poorly fleshed out. This book could have been so much better with more detail, more character development, and a more thoroughly developed plot. Simply put, it just needed more....everything.

3.0 out of 5 stars snooze fest, December 30, 2014

I really wanted to like this book, but found it too easy to set it down and do other things or take a nap. It really and truly induced sleep. The plot is loose and unfocused, the action (what little there is) begins at 56% into the book and the story ends way too suddenly, leaving readers dissatisfied and without closure- perhaps relief that its over.

This attempt at film noir failed for me, I hated every one of its 102 minutes - time I will never get back. It was explict, violent, and full of itself- so if that's your thing, this is your kind of movie.

I mostly enjoyed this book - I found the character development lacking and the story line quite preposterous as the book reached its conclusion, but overall interesting and moderately enjoyable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rediculous, November 1, 2014

Poorly developed characters, implausible story line, unlike able main character, this list is long of what is wrong with this book. I gave it two stars only because I actually finished reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, October 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I really liked this book, but had a few issues - hence four stars instead of five. First, the title suggests the book is about one main character when it tells the individual stories of quite a few orphan train riders, though the stories do intersect. Second, it paints an overly "rosy" picture of these children's destinies and of the tolerance of the time. Despite these two issues, the story was an engrossing and enjoyable read and I do recommend it.

Price: $17.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Compelling, September 15, 2014
It's a rare author that can delve so deeply into the darkness that we all harbor to some degree. Dark Places does that and more. Sharp Objects was not quite as good but still a good read. Can't wait to read Gone Girl!
