5.0 out of 5 stars They're adults, stupid!, August 27, 2014

This story of turn-around states the one thing most CEOs don't get: Success really is dependent on how much autonomy you don't take away from adults that enables them to manage themselves at work the way they manage themselves outside work - as responsible adults.

1.0 out of 5 stars People don't buy your WHY, and you shouldn't either., July 28, 2014
Simon says “It’s worth repeating: people don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.” So what I do is I work in a job doing what I’m told. Why I do this is because the company pays me to do what I’m told. Thus, the company pays me because of my WHY which is that the company pays me. That’s worth repeating: the company pays me because the company pays me! Brilliant!

3.0 out of 5 stars This seminal book on Lean Production gives short-shrift to the real driver of productivity and quality., July 21, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While this is THE classic book on lean production, it suffers from two problems. First, the topic is lean production but the book is based on research focussed exclusively on data from automobile assembly plants rather than broader data across different types of manufacturing. This forces the authors to treat the best automobile assembly plant as the best model for lean production. Had the authors looked beyond the automobile assembly industry, they might have come to a different conclusion. But the problem is worse than that. Not only did they use only one set of data from one industry, they also allowed bias to color their analysis. They were biased toward product design, production engineering and JIT. They give short-shrift to the real key. The original researcher for this study was John Krafcik (he later became the President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America). In his own report of the data he pointed out that the skills and motivation of the work force has the greatest explanatory power of assembly plant performance. Yet this is given remarkably little attention in this book. Had the authors look beyond the automobile assembly even as nearby as the turnaround at Harley Davidson this focus on people might have gotten much more attention. In the case of Harley, there was no way to miss that the key was the people in every factory floor function. Get the people environment right, and everything else will sort itself out. Get it wrong and your ability to perform with high productivity and quality deteriorates. None of the plants studied actually does an exemplary job with people. Early in the book the authors insert several paragraphs on how the lean environment might increase employee stress, create anxiety over making costly mistakes, might cause the employee to miss getting a specific enough skill to be marketable outside the company, and worry that "workers may feel they have reached a dead end at an early point in their career." Clearly, the authors did not 'get-it' when it comes to people in this environment. But, they've done well for themselves promoting the other aspects of lean, and, no doubt, had very positive impacts on company's bottom lines. When they get the people equation right, they'll be even more potent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for every aspiring leader., November 9, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As an author Behave!: How to get 100% of your workers fully engaged. of such books I tend to successfully find snippets of insight in books about leadership but rarely recommend the entire book. Turn the Ship Around is an exception. I strongly recommend reading this book. The results of the tool and techniques that Captain David Marquet employed are undeniable. He also delivers interesting perspectives that differ with commonly held beliefs and practice. When he talks about empowerment he rightly suggests that it is a screwy idea. If a worker must go to the boss to be empowered how can the worker actually feel empowered. As Bob Sutton at Stanford suggests Weird Ideas That Work: How to Build a Creative Company "Hire a bunch of smart people and stay out of the way until they ask you for help." Marquet also talked about his need to change the way the crew thought. To get there you can try to change the thinking, hoping it will lead to a change in behavior; or you can change the behavior and hope it leads to a change in thinking. In the end, as Marquet rightly points out: "Frankly, I didn't care whether people thought differently at some point...so long as they behaved in certain ways.

Monopoly Rules: How to Find, Capture, and Control the Most Lucrative Markets in Any Business
Monopoly Rules: How to Find, Capture, and Control the Most Lucrative Markets in Any Business
by Milind M. Lele
Edition: Hardcover
42 used & new from $0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars With the simple pen stroke changing the word., May 9, 2013
Monopoly Rules does something interesting. It takes a concept like niche marketing and with the simple pen stroke changing the word from `niche' to `monopoly' opens up a wonderful new way of thinking about market position. The author suggest that the prime goal for any company is to hold a monopoly position in whatever you deliver for customers. Harvard graduate Dr Milind Lele, the author, suggests that there are five tests for monopoly
1. Do your customers see only you?
2. Are you invisible to your competitors?
3. Are your true competitors outside the dotted lines?
4. Do you price like a monopolist?
5. Do you earn unusually high profits?

Monopolies do not sustain. The author advises successful entrepreneurs to be always thinking about their next monopolies.

2.0 out of 5 stars List your goals and be accountable to someone., January 26, 2013
This review is from: The Dream Manager (Hardcover)
Here is the book in a sentence: Create a to-do list and be accountable for accomplishing the things on the list.

If you're running a company you can get results doing this, for example: "Today, five years after the birth of the initiative, more than 98% of Admiral employees participate in the Dream Manager Program. Home ownership among employees has tripled in five years, consumer debt amount employees has been reduced by 40 Percent...and 2785 significant dreams have been accomplished. Turnover has fallen from 400 percent to just 12 percent over the five year period, and Admiral's internal placement program accounts for 70% of turnover. Gross revenues have tripled..." Impressive and pretty specific results with only one little problem. The company "Admiral" does not exists. There are no such results because there is no such company.

I am not a fan of 'fable' books talking about business successes. I don't understand, why tell us a fable? It's business. If this stuff works so well, then tell us about real businesses that have used it and the results they've enjoyed. Otherwise, just give us the research or scientific basis for the theories and methods and we can draw our own conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the predecessor boot to Gino Wickman's masterpiece Traction, December 9, 2012

Like Gino Wickman's Traction, Verne Harnish's Mastering the Rockefeller Habits is a work of genius. Much of what Gino put in Traction was in this book first. This is also a brilliant How-to book for running any business. Highly recommend this for the entrepreneur.
