1.0 out of 5 stars Rip-off of Hiking Idaho, July 6, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book, Backpacking Idaho (2015) is an author-free, derivative volume of 46 trips or hikes. These hikes were selected by some persons at FalconGuides from among the 102 hikes in the prior book, Hiking Idaho, 3rd edition (2014) by Ralph and Jackie Maughan and Luke Kratz.

Backpacking Idaho's text and its photos were all taken from Hiking Idaho, but the paper is of much lower quality. As a result, the photos are of low contrast, and as a result, often poor quality. Mislabeled photos and other typos in Hiking Idaho were not corrected, and so they were carried over into Backpacking Idaho.

We are the authors of Hiking Idaho, 1st and 2nd editions. We had no hand in Hiking Idaho's third edition, and we receive no royalties from it. We think Luke Kratz did a good job updating Hiking Idaho to its third edition.

In Backingpacking Idaho, the “editors of Falcon Guides” thanked Jackie and I and Luke Kratz for these hikes/backpacks. We, Ralph and Jackie Maughan, however, did not give Rowman and Littlefield permission to use them and we did not know they were included until the book was published this June 2015.

You can get 102 hikes for $17.80 in Hiking Idaho or just 46 of these hikes for $15.45 in Backpacking Idaho.

It is hard to know why Backpacking Idaho exists. It might have something to do with FalconGuides being sold by Globe-Pequot to Rowman and Littlefield during 2014.

It is useful for simple verbal tasks, but I don't think Amazon has a very good support page to show how to do the latest and more complicated tasks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition not illustrated, May 13, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this version of David Copperfield because it is described as illustrated. The Kindle edition is not and the book description should say so. I know the period illustrations were very popular and helped to liven up the installments which appeared weekly in popular newspapers of the time. The illustrations themselves were quite famous, so I very much want to see them in the Kindle book I purchased. Instead, I have to Google image the major characters and hope I come up with a hit.
The one star is, of course, for the failure of the publisher, not Dickens' stunning writing which is still wonderful after 160 years. The novel does start slow with excessive chattiness by the narrator (old David Copperfield), but once you are to Chapter 4 or so, the characters take over and the and the story unfolds taking you easily through the rest of the pages.

First, get rid of the reflex to think that suited cards are more valuable. They're not because this is not traditional solitaire. Second, pay attention to playing the cards high and low. A two placed on an ace is just as valuable as a king. Third, you don't have to spend a dime. The app gives you plenty of free coins to watch short ads or just to keep you in the game. If you want to "boost" your game to make it more exciting, then you'll have to fork over some real, not virtual, coins. I know I'm hooked but have gotten pretty good. I am up to Level 10. Like I said, I haven't spent one real dime but have spent waaaay too much time.

The Secret Piano: From Mao's Labor Camps to Bach's Goldberg Variations
The Secret Piano: From Mao's Labor Camps to Bach's Goldberg Variations
Price: $5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Bach and Red Guards, February 10, 2015
I have read numerous books about what the Cultural Revolution did to the arts under Madame Mao. The Secret Piano stands out because Zhu Xioa-Mei spends so many words on the music itself. Never again will I feel the same about the Goldberg Variations and the Brandenburg Concertos or for that matter, Schumann, Chopin, or Listz. I am glad she left the chronicling of the years leading to the fall of The Gang of Four to other writers. By focusing so completely on the music and those students who played it and professors who taught it, she lets us live their lives and truly understand what "passion" means

The app, although a relatively good one, does seize up when I try to download photos and when I try to enlarge a story from small viewing to large. Otherwise the format is nice looking and easy to navigate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Reason This Is a Classic, January 11, 2015

This tale of treasure hunt and sea adventure has set the standard for all that have come after it. . .and for good reason.
It can be enjoyed by everyone from middle-school to post graduate.
It is extraordinarily well plotted, and populated with strong characters each possessing his own unique voice and personality. The setting, whether on ship or on land, forms a moving picture so vivid that it is little work to believe you were there. The language is as fresh as today and as old many yesterdays. Best of all, it tells morality tale but never sounds like it comes from a pulpit.
I read this while listening to the professional narration. One man alone does all the voices, and he never slips, not once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult Topics Handled That Affirm Life and Literature, January 8, 2015
The main character really is the bookstore. The people who pass through it find they are the better for it. True, there is death, infidelity, revenge, but the author treats them with respect & not too much strum & drang. Most interesting to me is being updated about what's happening in the book world and being reminded of the classics. The writer often poses the question, are book people snobs? Not hardly. we just like to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not much of a story and slow., December 10, 2014
The story was simple and has been done many times before in various sci fy programs. There was just not much of a tale to tell, but what little there was took an excruciatingly long time. Scarlett is easy on the eyes, but not enough for me to find any reason to have watched this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, November 11, 2014
I have read numerous biker books from Hunter Thompson to club member biographies to true crime to action fiction to women's porn romance. This stands out as one of the top four in the genre.
