Game Time Adjustments (Making timely adjustments to unmet expectations is the key to Christian maturity)

5.0 out of 5 stars A book any sportsman will enjoy, December 18, 2014
Americans love sports. We also love the idea that we're quite good at sports (at least as armchair quarterbacks!). We love to recount our favorite moments of triumph and rag our friends when our teams beat theirs. We love to be inspired by the best of stories, and shake our heads when reminded of the cautionary tales of those who appeared great but only until their day of judgment (for cheating, betting, doping, etc.). Bill Pugh offers the best of both worlds: a book any sportsman will enjoy, and a book that offers much wisdom for life. "Making timely adjustments to unmet expectations is the key to Christian maturity" isn't just a subtitle. It's a way of life for Bill. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book offers hope..., December 2, 2014
U.S. News & World Report calls depression "the world's No. 2 killer." Nearly 19 million Americans struggle with the symptoms and effects of depression in any given year. Millions of Christians are included in that number. Sadly, the view that depression is somehow a sign of one's lack of faith and spirituality leaves depressed believers with unconquerable feelings of guilt, failure, and isolation from the rest of the faith community.

More than 5 million Christians currently long to understand why they struggle with depression--and how that experience meshes with their faith. They are searching for a purpose in their suffering--a purpose, thank God, that does exist.

Other books guide readers to the quickest cure through psychology or medicine or theology. This book integrates a sound theology with a professional assessment of the psychological dynamics of depression, giving readers a foundation to find hope and purpose in the midst of their experience of depression.

False views of depression within the Church can leave Christians who suffer from depression with no idea how to integrate their experience with their faith. They struggle with guilt over their depression, and many believe it is somehow God's punishment for their sins or the inadequacies of their spiritual lives. This book exposes the misconceptions that distort Christians' views of their experiences with depressive symptoms.

This book shows readers there can be a positive usefulness for depression in the wider perspective of the divine plan. It establishes a fundamental framework for understanding why people of faith can find themselves in the slough of depression and yet know that, first, there is a way out, and second, God can guide us through the experience in a way that is as life-changing as it is fulfilling of his heart's desire for us.

Throughout history, God has called men and women prone to depression to do great things for the kingdom. He continues to do so today, allowing his followers to experience his compassion with new understanding and be strengthened in faith through the experience of depression.

Unlike any other work, this book:
* focuses on the experience of depression, not urging rushed treatment
* discusses the positive life-changing results of depression when faith is integrated with treatment
* explains the power of depression to strengthen faith
* encourages readers to seek God's purpose for depression in his divine plan
* combats religious misconceptions about depression
* places symptoms, causes, and effects of depression within a context of systematic theology

Through this book, readers will:
* learn to see depression not as an illness to be cured but as an opportunity for positive change and development of a stronger faith in God
* find practical answers to dealing with depression as a believer
* discover freedom from guilt by understanding the Lord's purpose in depression
* experience God's compassion with a new understanding
* gain a new appreciation for the exquisite design of God's plan for living
* be challenged to re-calibrate their view of God and the way he works

Highly recommended!

This review is from: Alex and the Airplane (Paperback)
For years J. Steven Hunt has served as Corban University’s Vice President for Marketing. For many more years, Steve has been a published author and illustrator. Then again, his latest book was 20 years in the making. From the storyline and sketches in 1994, to renewed inspiration from his own grandkids, Steve’s delightful book, "Alex and the Airplane" (ages 6 to 106), is now published. The cover says it all: Kids (and parents) are going to cherish this book for years to come.

PS Yes, I can't wait to read this to my Honeycutt grandkids this Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars They worked tirelessly to craft the best of academic volumes--very smart yet accessible writing, November 26, 2014
I have waited several years to hold this volume in my hands. Huge congratulations to author Donald L. Brake Sr. and co-author Todd Bolen. They worked tirelessly to craft the best of academic volumes--very smart yet accessible writing, beautifully illustrated, with engaging firsthand sidebar accounts of experiences both past and present. The reader immediately feels as if he or she is walking the very streets where Brake and Bolen did so much of their work. The stunning photography offers new insights at every turn. True, one of my favorite photos (page 167, bottom of page) accidentally shows up a second time (page 209, top). Then again, it's a fabulous photo that informs the writing on each of those pages. Few books deserve five stars. This volume deserves a sixth for far exceeding the normal expectations of the primary intended readership.

5.0 out of 5 stars sadness and joy fill this novel about "one family's encounter with dementia" ..., November 25, 2014
Humor and history (from Norway to Colorado, which figure into both sides of my own family), sadness and joy fill this novel about "one family's encounter with dementia" (which also touches my family). Part of the proceeds benefit the American Alzheimer's Association. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars printed out beautiful 11"x17" posters in place of slides, October 31, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Shortly before speaking at a weekend retreat at Baker Lake Lodge, my wife, Renee, discovered they weren't set up for PowerPoint presentations. We quickly ordered three of these low-tech displays, printed out beautiful 11"x17" posters in place of slides, and after the fact realized how "new and great-looking" Renee's presentations look. The sold-out retreat audience of 40 loved them too. For audiences of up to 40 or 50 people, this is a low-tech, low-cost way to impress audiences. Highly recommended!

The Lost Art of Lingering: Mutual Mentoring for Life Transformation
The Lost Art of Lingering: Mutual Mentoring for Life Transformation
Price: $9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars More books like this, please!, October 31, 2014
This is so much more than a book. Part One offers 5 chapters on the art of lingering that reveal Rowland Forman's theology, ministry, brokenness and wisdom. Part Two offers 10 chapters on the practices of lingering. His 5 Olympic-style rings unite the practices in pairs. My favorite? The ring of Affirming and Admonishing, two sides of what the Scriptures call encouragement. Like Barnabas, "Son of Encouragement," Rowland Forman is a practical teacher. So Part Three offers 7 mentoring resources, including an annotated list of recommended books. How good to see Mentor Like Jesus by Regi Campbell, Real-Life Discipleship by Jim Putman, The Making of a Mentor by Ted W. Engstrom and Ron Jenson, and other favorite books among that annotated list. Among my list of favorite books now is this one. Thanks, Rowland Forman, CCBT and Confia Publishers -- more books like this, please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deceptively simple & yet revolutionary volume, September 21, 2014
This review is from: The Words of Jesus (Paperback)
If there is one volume I wish I had written, it’s the deceptively simple and yet revolutionary volume The Words by my good friend Lee Cantelon. In that relatively thin volume, Lee presents the words of Jesus stripped away from the Gospels. Those words, organized thematically, continue to echo in my soul long after I put the book down. In fact, it's the sort of book one must read slowly, only a page or two at a time.
