5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Classical Music Blu-ray, August 28, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's tough to find good classical Blu-rays that are fairly recently recorded (this one in 2010), crisp picture and sound worthy of HD, and have excellent performances. If you love Chopin, place this disc in the home theatre and sit back in relax. As others have stated, the piano concerto #1, one of my favorites, is thoughtful, lyrical, and beautiful. Concerto #2 has more of the force, talent, and passion of the performer. He really bring it home. Of course, Kissin is brilliant and watching him rip into the encores is really fantastic. Both performances are excellent and this Blu-ray will light up your visual and auditory theater set up. I just finished it for the first time, and I can guarantee it'll be played often. You won't be disappointed in either performer. Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Summer Read, August 4, 2014

This review is from: Murder Down Under (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this murder mystery. I've never been to Australia, as much as I'd love to go, and this murder mystery took me there. The location is definitely part of the story. A fine mystery, well-developed characters, and a believable ending make this one a winner. The main character reminded me of a few women I've met in my life. Very enjoyable!

1.0 out of 5 stars What a dog, June 19, 2014
I liked "Ted" very much. and I think Seth is a remarkable talent; however, this movie is really bad. 1 out of 10 lines, or so is funny, sometimes really funny. The overall dialogue is so bad. I found it difficult to sit through, and I tend to like raunchy comedy. This is just poorly written, and i'm surprised they didn't rewrite about half the script. There were times when I felt embarrassed for some of the cast having to deliver such garbage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Masterpiece, November 10, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a Blu-Ray masterpiece. Whether or not you like this movie, I do, this Blu-ray has one of the best combinations of 5 star sound and video that I own. This is a high def. demonstration disk. The colors, clarity, and shadow in the video will blow you away. The sound uses all the speakers to perfection in the home theatre. This will show the non-believers the possibilities of true high definition. It's an incredible movie experience. This is a GREAT Blu-Ray.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Review, October 12, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The movie is a 5 star classic for sure, so this short review of of the Blu-Ray.

Sound (5/5) - Surprised to see outstanding audio quality here. Ran it through the home theatre and was very impressed with voice quality and effects for a movie of its age.

Extras (3.5) - a Few good shorts with a very good but very short behind the scene home movie of the filming, a good audio commentary with pop-ups, but there could easily be more for a movie of this importance.

VIDEO (4) - Good, but not great. A little too much grain here and there. It is very good quality and it's definitely worth the buy. For a black and white film, it's a good entry but not in the outstanding category of The Maltese Falcon or Strangers on a Train,

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, TERRIBLE blu-ray quality, August 21, 2013

This review is from: Notorious [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Wow, what a disappointment! After getting To Catch a Thief and Strangers on a Train on blu-ray, I was ready for another excellent Hitchcock transfer. This stands as my worst video quality Bluray. It looks more like a mediocre video quality standard Dvd. This is an excellent film and I do not own any other copies of this, so I'll keep it so that I can watch the movie, but wow! The jittery, soft, and poor high-grain quality of this Bluray is stunning compared to the amazon high def. quality of Strangers on a Train. I check hi def digest for reviews and usually they are spot on, but they blew this one. Really, terrible Bluray video quality.

It's an easy 5 star classic film. I gave it 4 because I was slightly disappointed in the video quality, especially when others are raving about it. Don't get me wrong, the video quality is very good, generally speaking very sharp. I watched this and then The Maltese Falcon bluray back to back, and I must admit that The Maltese Falcon's video quality is sharper and clearer. The let down in Casablanca, as some others have noted, is in the close-ups of Ingrid Bergman. The video quality goes from sharp to soft in a second. On a smaller TV, you would probably never notice. It could be from filters used, make-up, etc.. that is just the way they used to film it. However, the contrast between sharp and soft is really noticeable on a hd big screen television. On standard film way back when, I'm sure the video projection at the theatre was just all soft. They weren't into Hi def in the 1940's! I will compare the Bluray to my regular dvd later and see how much better the Bluray is. Still, it didn't really take much away from the movie itself. This is one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Blu-Ray, June 6, 2013

This review is from: Cleopatra [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
The movie is a solid 4 for entertainment, and the blu-ray is a solid 5.

The clarity of the images are fantastic and consistent. You watch a film like this and understand the incredible money and craftmanship that went into the BIG look of the film long before a green screen and computerized alterations existed. The brilliant images of faces, costumes, and sets are exactly what blu-ray can deliver.
The sound quality also holds up well. It's still amazing to me what high definition can do with older 60's movies if handled properly, and this one is an excellent example. If you are a real movie fan, and want to see a big picture production in your High def home theater, then this is your cup of tea. You will not be disappointed.

This one is worth buying just to see what an incredible beauty Elizabeth Taylor was. My god, forget the anorexic media images jammed down our throats that is supposed to pass for beauty, this is what a beautiful woman is supposed to look like. Ms. Taylor, you rock!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than many are saying!, May 26, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
1. This is a classic, outstanding movie

2. This is not a reference quality blu-ray

3. Picture and sound are excellent for a 1960's movie.

4. The clarity of the picture varies between very good and a bit soft. The quality is surprisingly inconsistent. Someone said something about some scenes being filmed with filters and that impacted the result? Not sure if that's true.

5. The signature soundtrack sounds great. You won't be disappointed here.

6. The picture is not as bad as some are saying, but I do understand the frustration when we know it could be better.

7. It's cheap. i would buy this blu-ray again in a second.

8. I'll be watching this one over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality, May 14, 2013

Too many blu-ray classical dvds are old performances that are retreads and are not filmed with high def audio and video. The result of that does not demonstrate what blu-ray can be. This one is high def filmed with hi-def sound. This performance is played at a gorgeous hall and the striking visual clarity is stunning. Check out the wood grain pattern on her violin, for instance. Excellent sound quality and performances. These are two top level performers and the result is really pleasing. The combo of visual and auditory high quality is fantastic. Give me more classical blu-rays like this one, please!
