My Navy... the voyage of a submarine cook
My Navy... the voyage of a submarine cook

5.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise, April 25, 2013

This was a wonderful book! The author takes you through his time in the navy in a very conversational and personal tone.

Although he starts off as a cook on a submarine his career has seen him perform all kinds of roles. When I bought this book I was expecting 100% submarine service and stories. I wasn't too pleased when he diverged from that but the rest of his career was fascinating. From having to lock up navy seals in the middle east to recruiting back in the US he describes it all in a very engaging manner.

I gave this book five stars because it was a very pleasant surprise and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend it to anyone who is not only interested in the submarine service but to anyone who wants to know what a military life can be like. Highs and lows.

Thoroughly recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars Aimed at the VERY young, January 22, 2013

Neither the description or the glowing 5 star reviews mention that this book is aimed at young adults or older children.

It's unsuitable for adults. Read some of the other 1-star reviews if you want details.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a well written book, January 22, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's difficult to write a negative review for a book like this. The author has accomplished so much and there is so much to admire in his life that it's almost shameful to criticize the way the story is told.

However, this book is a very difficult read. The narrative is often broken when the author spends a few paragraphs talking about the early career of a pilot. After an interesting situation is introduced, pages and pages are dedicated to background information with little relevance.

In the end I skipped much of the book and didn't enjoy it at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars More romance than science fiction., December 27, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was expecting a science fiction story but this is more of a romance story aimed at young adults. This is hinted at in the description and I should have paid more attention. Nevertheless it is mainly sold as science fiction and I don't think it deserves a high score as such.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mucho Macho indeed, December 23, 2012

This is a fantastic story, very difficult to put down.

It contains more truth than most other true accounts, Mr. Damato writes about sailing as both an outsider to the culture of sailing but also as a representative of the core values that it espouses.

I recommend this book to anyone who sails, wants to sail or just wants to do something to be proud of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really valuable book for app store shoppers., December 1, 2010
Although I love the iTunes App Store it's heavily weighted towards what's new and popular right now.

It's easy for good apps to get lost in the constant stream of new apps, note I said 'new', not 'better'.

What Glenn has done is gone through each category and picked out the best of the best. If you're have are new to the iPhone or iPad this is an indispensable book. It will save you money and more importantly, time. It's also a great way to find out about everything your device can do.
