Season of the Sand Bird (Raven's Chosen Book 1)

4.0 out of 5 stars An apocalyptic vision of the past., April 16, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First of all- do not judge this book by its cover- literally. At a glance you might think "Uh-oh. A Prehistoric bodice-ripper." (If there is such a thing.) But what's inside is so much more- somewhat reminiscent of Ray Bradbury's FROST AND FIRE. To the best of my knowledge, I don't know that anyone has attempted to tell the story of what might actually have happened within the Neanderthal world, but here the author has dived right in and you will likely feel as though you are right there, on the ground, amongst them. There are some issues with the polishing of the text here and there, and I would recommend taking a look at the glossary at the end of the book before you actually read it- the author (Feath Pym) has created bits and pieces of another language and mythology, not unlike what Richard Adams accomplished with WATERSHIP DOWN. Give this book your full attention, and you will be rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Book, April 5, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The beauty -and importance- of this remarkable book cannot be overstated. Jim Bishop has made a pivotal moment in history thoroughly clear; anyone with devout biblical or even the most casual historical interest should read it. For me, certain things- for one example, the act of communion- have never been completely understandable until now. Bishop's patient and very thorough explanation of each and every moment leading up to the crucifixion is a standard that every historian and journalist should strive for.

Beautifully shot, wonderful performances all-around, and a great soundtrack. I think every American man, woman and child should see this film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, in a big way., August 8, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It hurts to do this. It really does. As much as I enjoy Jackie Ganley's Facebook page of the same title (Tragic Hollywood: Beautiful, Glamorous and Dead) and I really do appreciate what she tries to do with it, this book is so poorly put together that it's actually embarrassing. Her editorial comments throughout are sophomoric and cringeworthy, the Kindle formatting is atrocious and all over the place, and honestly I've seen religious tracts that were better written than this. Ganley needs to pull this from distribution and have a professional editor (or two or three) guide her through this mess until it's something that won't do harm to her page's reputation. I say that out of kindness because the Facebook page is really and truly something to behold, but this book (severely overpriced, by the way) will do nothing to help her cause.

4.0 out of 5 stars A haunting Christmas fable, June 11, 2014

Do not let the first few pages of THE PRAYER deter you, or fool you. It is not what you think it is- perhaps a sentimental, overly simplistic holiday poem; no, it is so much more. It will take all of five minutes to read, but its message will echo in your mind for far longer. And the illustrations are simply wonderful. FOUR STARS

1.0 out of 5 stars Say what? Terrible., March 21, 2014

I actually read through the book twice, and simply could not follow it or appreciate whatever it was that the author was attempting to do. Fractured sentences and the incorrect use of grammar throughout doesn't help matters; the book is full of very basic editing mistakes that should have been addressed before publication (the author even admits up front that they ignored an editor's suggestions). Not worth your time- I know I've got several hours now that I'll never get back.

Rebecca Musser and her book both deserve medals for bravery. An extremely well written, terrifying and important book. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as important as expected, March 8, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I found the book disappointing; the writing is quite simplistic in places. I felt as though I was reading a high school level history book at times- and there really isn't anything especially new or different that Clint Hill brings to this book; this guy was feet away from history and unfortunately does a poor job of describing it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, March 8, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Without question an interesting read, but a little too heavy on the constant "Oswald did it Oswald did it Oswald did it" drum beat. Some truly "shocking" info regarding the conduct of at least one of the Warren Commission lawyers; I felt I needed to take a shower after reading one of the particularly lurid revelations. It makes one wonder: THESE were the sort of men entrusted to get to the bottom of that monstrous act (the assassination of JFK)? And the book does point to what have to be some seriously significant events that took place in Mexico; there are no doubt some people (still living) who have some explaining to do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs., March 8, 2014

Absolute sludge. Written by a sick, bitter old man with an axe to grind. He should be ashamed, but frankly I'm not sure he's capable of any decent human feelings. A totally unfair distortion of Johnny's memory.
