4.0 out of 5 stars Low End Laser Multifunction Printer, June 1, 2006
Samsung SCX-4100 is a low end multifuntion laser printer. I'll go through the pros and cons first.

Pros:

- Price of SCX-4100 is quite attractive.

- Small and compact for a multifunction laser printer.

- Supports PC, UNIX and Mac* (Samsung removed the Mac driver from the web site, but you can still find it on the Internet).

Cons:

- Default print setting tends to produce a print out that's too light. Setting the printer's advanced printing option to print darker helps.

- The photocopy option has the same issue (Dark option is actually more like a Normal).

- You need to choose the photocopy mode properly to get a reasonable photocopy (Text, Text/Photo, Photo).

- Scanning in color is quite slow (2X slower) compared to other multifunction laser printers.

- The toner comes with the package is an introductory toner (basically 1/3 of the standard toner) --> cost cutting

- USB 1.0 only (although given the slowness of the scanning speed, USB 2.0 won't help)

- No fax (but at this price, you really cannot expect to have fax).

- No document feeder (again, at this price, it is unrealistic to expect a document feeder).

- Manual feeder is not great (it does work and takes time to get used to).

- No expansion options (cannot add RAM, duplexing or network support).

This laser multifunction printer is suitable for people looking for a cheap laser printer and won't be doing a lot of scanning or photocopying. A laser printer (even a low end one) will generally print text quicker and better than an ink jet (ink jet's ppm is normally quoted base on draft mode).

However, for people who demand fast speed and quality scanning and/or quality photocopying, stay away from this device. Also, this device is for home or small office. It is not a heavy duty laser printer.

Like all low-end laser multifunction devices, SCX-4100 has some issues (basically a result of the manufacturer trying to reduce cost). Nevertheless, it is a laser printer, color scanner and a photocopier all-in-one. Overall, for most home users and small offices, it is certainly worth considering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much has changed in 2nd edition, February 1, 2003
Update: This book is written for an older version of the exam. You can no longer do the exam which this book is written for. I no longer recommend this book (unless you can get it for really really cheap price).

The second edition of this book simply corrects the typing errors in the first edition (lots of them). Unfortunately, it does not address some of the key flaws in this book:

a) Chapter 8 Thread-Safe Servlets is still wrong. Session variables and Servlet Context variables are not thread safe (the book states they are, which is incorrect). They are not thread safe!
b) Chapter 11 Web Tier Design Patterns does not cover "Front Controller" design pattern. This is not author's fault because it is not listed in the exam objectives. However, you probably want to know what this pattern is all about before the exam.
c) Some questions in the book are about XML DTD. They are not related to the exam and seem fairly pointless. Some questions in the book are misleading.
d) Personally, I feel Chapter 10 Using Custom Tags is not very well explained (mainly because the examples used are too simple).

So why 3 stars? Well, despite all those issues, I believe you can pass with just this book (I bought the SCWCD Exam Study Kit as well as this book. The SCWCD Exam Study Kit by Hanumant Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia is far better than this book). The flaws mentioned probably will cost you at most 10-15% of your score so you most likely can still pass with this book. Therefore, the book still deserves a pass (2.5 stars, but there is no option for 2.5 so I picked 3).

If you can get this book cheap, it is worth reading (quite easy to read). However, if you want to be really safe (or you want to get only 1 book for the exam), it is wise to stay away from this book and get The SCWCD Exam Study Kit book instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, February 1, 2003
Quick Update: A second edition of this book is now available. Get the second edition of this book.

This book is the book to get if you intend to take the exam. You should be able to get great score (90+) in the exam with this book. The code examples in the book are great and easy to understand. The test questions do test you on the exam topics very well. As a book for the exam, this book deserves 5 stars.
However, nothing is perfect. The second print of this book (July 2002) still contains minor errors. There are not major, but do check the web site for the errata. Anyway, do make sure you get the latest print of the book.
