Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
If you've never used Frommer's guides, then this is a good one to start with. It is easy to find what you're looking for, be it some place to eat, stay, shop or visit. Descriptions of the locations are accurate and filled with usefull information. These guides are always a great for anyone that is looking to find basic or detailed information for any of the destinations you might wish to travel too.
Highly recommended even if you've been to Chicago and think you know the city. I've been there a lot and still found things I didn't know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for a summer beach read., April 24, 2012
This review is from: Chomp (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Let me be very honest about my review of anything Carl Haiaasen has written. I've read every novel he's written and am a huge fan. I've loved every book I've read prior to this one.

This book, which I greatly looked forward to, feels like a really rushed version of his previous works. There is humor, but only two or three times did I actually laugh out loud. Verses most of the other books, I've laughed hard throughout the book. This is an entertaining book, we do care about the people, but not enough to really get excited. The book does pick up speed as it progresses, but by that time, it is pretty much obvious what is going to happen.

I missed Skink. Kept expecting him to show up in the Everglades...he didn't show. Maybe Hiaasen has decided he's had enough of him. The main charachter, Derek Badger, is really too stupid to have survived. I do like the Cray boys, but again, I just didn't fall in love with them until late.

Not sure why, but the book seemed rushed and he (Hiaasen) seemed to depend on jokes/last minute escapades that he's used before.

Fun read, not his best. Take it to the beach, read it for a couple days, finish it and leave it in the hotel/condo for the next person.

This review is from: The Cove: A Novel (Hardcover)
If you want to read a story that will grab you at the very beginning and just hold you tighter and tighter until the end, this is a book for you. Set in the hills of No. Carolina during WW I, it is the story of a lonely woman that wonders if life has anything to offer her. She lives alone in a cove with her brother and is an outcast in the local community because superstition and a birthmark she carries has everyone believing she is cursed. When a stranger appears in the cove playing a flute, she even wonders if it is real. He is and how their lives intertwine is very well written.
Then we see the anti-German fever that swept the country during that perios and the horrible consequences of the local army recruter's bigotry and self importance.

Once you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down as you race to the end.

Great literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great help for understanding the operation of the 60D, April 19, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you own the Canon EOS 60D, you know that the sophistication of the camera can be a bit overwhelming. Busch's book is a great guide to all the functions, how to best use them and is quite well organized and easy to follow.
I don't suggest you sit down and read the book cover to cover, but when you wish to explore another feature of the camera system, find it explained in the book and study that section. You will find it a valuable asset as you lear your camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential reading for Confederate Bowie Collectors, April 19, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you are a collector of Bowie knives, especially Confederate knives, this is absolutely essential reading. At over 280 pages and literally several hundred photos and illustrations...the vast majority in color, it is the only publication that completely deals with the subject of Confederate Bowie Knives. It discusses the individual makers with beautiful large color photos of the knives made by each.

Any student of the Civil War, regardless if you collect these knives or not, should own and study this wonderful addition to the history of these knives. Simply beautiful and crammed with all the information you need.

I would also recommend the book "The Bowie Knife" by Norm Flayderman as one needed with this book. Flayderman's book is a wonderful history of the Bowie knife with information of manufacturers outside of the Confederacy. Both books are wonderfully done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say goodbye to screen protector bubbles!, March 23, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Remember the screen protectors that were almost impossible to apply without bubbles? Well, not "almost" impossible...simply impossible. Say goodbye to them and hello to the best, easiest to apply and clean screen protector on the market.
I was apprehensive about the claim of "100% bubble free", but figured for $20...why not try it. That is actually less money than some of the protectors out there that almost positively will leave bubbles.
It arrived today and I looked at the package..afraid to open it for fear I'd be yelling and swearing once again. Finally opened it, read the one page instructions and 30 seconds later....it was on! Perfect, no bubbles, no problems, easy as anything you can think of....Actually easier than opening the package it came in!
A wonderful screen protector. Used my iPad for about an hour, shut it down and took the cloth that came with it and wiped the screen...finger prints came right off the protector. Best part, is you can remove it and put it back on if it gets really dirty and needs cleaned with liquid.
This is a great screen protector!

5.0 out of 5 stars What magic really is., March 3, 2012
As with the first book, this is not Harry Potter magic. This is truely adult fantasy/fiction and is wonderfully crafted. The manner in which Mr. Grossman weaves Julia's story into Quentin's is artfully written and developed. Up to the last 100 pages I'd probably have given this book four stars, because it seems to get off to a bit of a slow start, but once the reader begins to make the connections that are there, you cannot stop reading. I knew that the "calling" of OLU was going to have some implications that the participants could not see, and when Julia begins to want to stop if, you know things are going to take a turn you hadn't foreseen.
The conclusion of this book has as many surprises packed into the last four pages that could possibly crammed in and I doubt you will be able to see most of them coming.

A wonderful book that is on par with the best fantasy being written today. The only question remaining is will there be a third book? This could nicely conclude Quentin's quest, or it could be a stepping off point.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best!, February 1, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It is hard for me to understand how Mr. Rabb could possibly write a better conclusion to his trilogy of one man and his struggles from post WW I to immediate pre WW II in Germany than he has done here. The main character throughout all three books is one flawed, but brilliant investigator with the Berlin police force in the first two books. The stories in "Rosa" and "Shadow and Dark" are true mysteries that also bring to light the horrible changes that are taking place in Germany from 1918 up to the very late 1920s. In the third book, taking place in the late 1930s, "The Second Son" all of that is past and the underlying conflict within himself and his family come to bear as he searches for his youngest son during the Civil War in Spain, immediately pre WW II.

There is no way to describe the pain and slow realizations that occur, you simply have to read the series....in order! Do not try to pick this book up and hope to understand what all is happening or has happened without reading the first two.

This trilogy is, at once, a brilliant look at the political situation in Germany during this period; extremely well written mysteries and, most importantly wonderful character studies of the main players. The end is almost poetry in the manner in which it is written.

As with the first two books, there is so much more going on than what you can see...all you can do is go along for the ride and let this wonderful, horrible story unfold.

One of the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great postal history of this country...via Indiana, January 22, 2012

This two volumn set, long out of print, is considered the most authoritive history of the postal system in the entire US. Centered on Indiana, it is, undoubtedly the best history of the postal system of this country ever published.

Amazon says they can get it for $75!?? Good luck. You would be lucky to find this two vol. set for less than $300 from any antique bookseller.

If you collect stamps, free franks or are interested in the postal history of this country...this is a must for your library.

As a life long Batman fan, it's always been my opinion that the Joker was/is Batman's best, most complex and threatening nemisis. "The Joker" A Visual History of the Clown Prince of Crime" is a great, and long needed, look at this character. Beautifully illustrated with ton's of information, this is really requied reading for any fan of Batman...regardless of age. In fact, I believe the older you are, and the longer you've read and loved the Batman stories, the more you will appreciate this wonderful book.
