Just finished, after putting it down to do other work, and I'm glad I did. I always feel like Chris Brogan is speaking directly to me. Now, it's time to put several of these ideas into motion. We'll worth the time to read. But, more importantly, we'll worth the time to implement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Things will happen if you take action!, December 4, 2012

I just finished this book, and must thank C.C. Chapman for outlining what he did to accomplish all the amazing things in his life, and how you can do the same. The overarching goal? Take action. Don't sit on the sidelines.

I am hoping (going to?) put many of his ideas into action over the coming year.

I recommend reading this book and investing the time in yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to Optimize your On-Line Presence, April 15, 2012
Guy Kawasaki offers a simplistic take on search engine optimization in his book, What the Plus?, by saying the best method to improve search rankings is to "Write. Good. Stuff." And, while I agree with the idea, there is much more to search engine optimization than just that. And Lee Odden, in his book Optimize - How to Attract and Engage More Customers by Integrating SEO, Social Media, and Content Marketing outlines exactly how much work proper optimization really is.

Odden takes the reader on a complex journey through the optimization process. From the decision regarding where optimization fits within your company to the necessary market research and buyer personas, to the culmination of your hard work with talk about the necessary measurement tools and tactics, Odden covers it all. And he covers it in incredible depth, but without any techno-speak.

Although the tools, methods, and advice throughout this book may be better suited to larger businesses, the examples provided almost always relate to the typical small business. This makes the work seem manageable, even by an SEO newbie. If you utilize Optimize as a workbook and not a "read cover to cover" book," you will realize the benefits that SEO has to offer. And to help you accomplish this, Odden offers "Action Items" at the end of each chapter, to help you continue to move your SEO strategy forward.

Although text-book in nature, time spent reading and acting on Lee Odden's advice throughout this book will be well spent.

I downloaded this book because it was cheap (2.99). I'm walking away from this book with more information about how to make GooglePlus work for me that I thought I would ever receive (I should have known better).

From creating a great profile to how to handle "bozo's", this book covers every aspect of GPlus that you would need.

And my favorite lesson? The only SEO advice you'll ever need: Write. Good. Stuff.

Thank you, Guy for a great book! Can't wait to share!

The Social Media Strategist: Build a Successful Program from the Inside Out
The Social Media Strategist: Build a Successful Program from the Inside Out
by Christopher Barger
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $19.86

4.0 out of 5 stars The Social Media Strategist - A Review, January 30, 2012
Social media is just beginning to reach it's "teen" years, being just about 10 years old, and many companies and organizations are still struggling with many big questions, such as "How to start a program" and "who will handle the social media".

Those questions are answered, but not before Christopher Barger, author of The Social Media Strategist outlines his seven elements to a winning social media program for corporations and organizations. These elements include having an executive champion inside the organization, a strong social media evangelist, a partnership between the organization's social media team and their legal department, and a well-articulated social media policy.

And, Christopher Barger knows what he is talking about. He built an incredibly successful social media program at General Motors and was there during it's very public bankruptcy and bail out.

His seven steps will work, of that I have no doubt. He believes that organizations need to become content publishers to succeed in social media. He believes that organizations need to have two-way conversations with their customers to be successful. And he is correct on all counts.

But his focus on large organizations may put this book, which is simple and easy to follow, out of reach for the small business owner. After all, they are both executive champion and social media evangelist. They are the social media team and legal department. I only hope that the small business owner takes the time to read through this book, as it offers a very concrete plan to incorporate social media into ANY business.

It's refreshing to read a book that actually outlines exactly what needs to be done, and who should do it, in regards to their social media strategy. After all, just saying you are on Facebook doesn't make a social strategy!

4.0 out of 5 stars What Happens "As Darkness Ends"?, September 7, 2011
This review is from: As Darkness Ends (Kindle Edition)
I don't get to read fiction much. Just aren't enough hours in the day, so when the opportunity came up to review a work of fiction, I jumped at the chance. The fact that it was someone I know from Twitter (Aaron Crocco or @MacStainless) made it even better.

So, I was provided a copy of the short story, "As Darkness Ends: Book OneAs Darkness Ends", and that began my journey into fiction reviews.

The premise of the book is simple. When a devastating earthquake hits the entire planet, Travis Hunter is among the survivors, and is tasked with a mission: help bring about the apocalypse or be killed. From there, we follow Hunter's journey across the globe, spreading judgment wherever he goes.

I read this story during the week that the Northeast suffered an Earthquake, Hurricane, and Tornadoes, so it seemed only fitting that it revolve around the mass destruction brought on by an earthquake. And I must say, the book grabs you from the first sentence. I can picture in my mind the scenes played out over the first few chapters, as Hunter tries to make his way back home, only to be stranded in the city to find refuge in a shelter.

Aaron Crocco paints a very vivid picture of the destruction that a major earthquake would cause New York City, and the ensuing mass hysteria that would follow. However, it began to feel a bit strained and forced as Hunter moved throughout the world, without the reader ever really understanding why. Yes, it is semi-explained, but we are left wondering if it really matters that people are being "judged".

It is my hope that, since this is the first story in a planned series, these questios will be answered. Maybe it is the author's intention to leave us with these questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Ready to LAUNCH Your Business!, August 9, 2011
What do marketing and Braveheart have in common? According to Michael Stelzner, author of Launch How to Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition (amazon affiliate link), building a successful social media company has everything to do with patience and perseverance.

Michael Stelzner, of Social Media Examiner fame, outlines exactly what he did to build his goliath website, which hosts three "Success Summits" per year (of which, I've attended two), and offers more free information than one person could ever read.

In his landmark book, Stelzner holds nothing back, offering you his "Elevation Principle Formula" for blogging and business success. The "Elevation Principle" proposes:

Great Content + Other People - Marketing Messages = Growth.

How do you achieve this? Stelzner outlines how he used the Elevation Principle to build his site to 10,000 subscribers, before even offering one item for sale. He accomplished this using a combination of "primary" and "nuclear" fuel for his company, while avoiding the typical marketing messages. His plan is the perfect formula for success.

If you're looking to propel your business to the next level, this is a book you will want to read not just once, but numerous times because its content is so rich it cannot be digested in just one sitting.

Disclaimer: This book was received for review from Michael Stelzner at no cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is your social media Likeable?, June 22, 2011
I just finished reading Likeable Social Media - How to Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, and Be Generally Amazing on Facebook (and other social networks), by Dave Kerpen, his first book on a topic that he lives and breathes. And, yes, I am a little biased, as I credit Dave with getting me hooked on this thing called "social media" (and thank him for providing an advanced review copy). But does that mean I loved the book? Actually, no. While I like it, I found that it was a restatement of a lot of information I had already heard countless times before: Engage, Be Authentic, Be Transparent and Honest, Learn to say "I'm Sorry" when necessary, and give your followers great content.

The greatest strength of this book was the numerous anecdotes that were used to illustrate each point. Dell's use of social media to increase sales. Ann Taylor's Loft pants issues. The Gap Logo fiasco. Each story helped explain what Kerpen believed was the correct (or incorrect) way to be "likeable".

Would I recommend this book for everyone? While I believe everyone can get something out of it, I believe this book is best suited for a social media beginner, as it will help them envision what can be accomplished through a purposeful social media strategy.
