5.0 out of 5 stars Cute and well-designed, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a really well-made, good quality, well-designed toy. I'd say it's one of the best night light "star ceiling" things out there - when you turn it on, it's truly beautiful and there is an option where the colors change magically as you watch. The other hit is the Sleep Sheep which is made by the same company. You'd probably want both for your kid (their functions do not overlap).

2.0 out of 5 stars a white elephant in the kitchen, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The problem with this device is that you almost do not get carrots these days that are thick enough to fit into that disc for you to spiral down (diameter should be MORE THAN 2 inches across - evenly - to get a good spiral). Carrots these days are trendily slim or small. Cucumbers just grind into a wet mushy mess. Only giant, thick-stemmed daikon works perfectly, but how many times do you really want to eat spiraled daikon strands, unless you're working in a sushi restaurant? The last inch of vegetable is always wasted as it does not get cut up, being stuck to the disc. This is turning out to be a white elephant in the kitchen. I would say don't get it unless you are really serious about using it all the time. BTW, "Benriner" sounds like a German brand, but it's really a clever Japanese made-up Western-sounding word! "Benri" means "convenient" in Japanese, and this device is from Japan of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you're hungry., January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Don't read this book if you're hungry. Very accessible, readable, and detailed first-hand account of what foodies and true chefs were like in the 1950s, i.e. before Zagats, Yelp and Food Channel ruined everything. I mean, this was even before Julia Child. This was the real thing. The type of book that introduces you to ideas and other books that you would also want to buy. Great inspirational volume. Read his other books - they're all good.

3.0 out of 5 stars rather insubstantial, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This isn't the best book on this subject because it's a bit thin. It turned out to be one of those companion books the museum publishes to go with an exhibition. So it's just full of museum paintings and rather insubstantial commentary. Still searching for the definitive treatise on this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for young people who are too "into" modern violence and military heroics, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Brilliantly elegiac and beautifully written. If you already like his poems you have to read this and it wouldn't disappoint. I don't know why it's not more famous. This is book 1 - you will want to read books 2 and 3 as well (which are titled, "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" and "Sherston's Progress"). While book 1 is about childhood, being a young man, and being (foolishly) into cricket and fox hunting, it segues very beautifully, and deliberately, into the horrors of WWI trench warfare. It captures the mindset of this naive generation perfectly - much more so than any anthology of Great War poets. If more young people of every nation read this thoughtful trilogy, written by a smart guy who experienced true war, they wouldn't think warfare, gunfighting and military heroics were so drop-dead cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality basic model for starter folks, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good starter model if you want to experiment using Crock Pots. It's a very good price and works beautifully. When you plug it in, it heats up very quickly. The only drawback is that this basic model does not have an "on" light to indicate it's really on when you plug it in (you just know it's working because it begins to feel warm). Neither does it have an on/off switch or an auto shut-off. Nevertheless, I think it's worth the price because it works decently, the ceramic inside pot is very heavy and of good quality, and so is the glass cover.

Black Initial D Racing Jdm License Plate Frame
Black Initial D Racing Jdm License Plate Frame

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality for Initial D fans, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For the low price, it's very decent quality. I mean, it's just beautiful if you are a fan. The Japanese letters are die-cut and well-made stickers that are stuck on (but don't look like they will fall off, don't worry). The only caveat is that the thick shape of the top bar (where the two screw bars are) may block the state name on your license plate. I researched this on the Internet and apparently in some states you could face a fine for partially obscuring text on your license plate. So I have not used it yet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather insubstantial, very few pages, January 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a cute book but it is very thin - please note how few pages it is. It is not a very substantial read and we went through it very quickly. It's best to borrow it from the local library rather than to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last a history book that isn't boring for the lay reader!, November 29, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you are interested in this historical subject you cannot hope for a better and more comprehensive book. Full of pictures, details, anecdotes, and very very readable/accessible for the lay reader. If you are a John Dower fan, you can also watch his lectures (free) on Japan publicly through the Harvard MIT online course offerings, which I discovered by accident. Check it out:
