I really liked this book. Even with its flaws, it was enjoyable and I recommend it if you like thrillers with technoporn thrown in for good measure. Two main characters well described and likeable. Ending felt a bit off, though; I recommend the author pay more attention to how he pulls it all together at the end, particularly when two characters get together. All that stuff and everything's suddenly OK?

I'd like to see what else Jerry Hatchett has on offer. He's an author to watch.

Not as good as the first one with Father Ananda and Jak. Too many repeated descriptions of the Garden and its sections. Too often reminding the reader of the corruption of civilian authorities, police, and some temple personnel. Hope the third one has the polish and intrigue of the first.

This should be a 4 star book. It has a good plot, excellent characters. But the writing is atrocious (as a retired editor, I know whereof I speak). There are misplaced modifiers, incorrectly used homonyms, words used incorrectly, sentence fragments, and the kind of error that makes you say, "...what? what did I just read?" and you stop and go over it again to figure it out.

There are also a couple of places where key transitions are made, the main characters figure something out, and it's not clear what they base their insight upon. Again, you stop and say to yourself, what made them see that.... And, of course, a few problems with commas and apostrophes scattered here and there.

In spite of the writing, the story is excellent and carries the reader through to the end. Each character has his/her own voice and is memorable, even the bad guys.

But please, Mr. Carpenter, hie thee to an editor! It distresses me greatly to see a good book ruined unnecessarily by poor composition.

The title of the story gives you an insight into the way the authors are able to take a familiar theme and mold it into to another dimension (when you read the story, you'll see what I mean). I enjoyed this work (summarized accurately by another reviewer) and I'd love to read the novel with the same characters. These authors write extremely well and are on my TBR list.

A perfect little gem of a story. I double checked and couldn't find the errors in grammar and formatting mentioned by other reviewers. "Couldn't give a rat's ass" was what the protagonist was thinking, and it may not be fine prose, but it's the way people think/talk in everyday parlance.

Nicely written, shivery and evocative, with realistic characters and feeling. I'm ready to read the book.

This review is from: Book Of Souls (Paperback)
I enjoyed "Book of Souls" for the most part. It's hard to review without spoilers.

I'm hesitant to recommend it to anyone who prefers strong active female partners over women who, now that they have the figure to catch a man and have a baby, are relegated for 90% of the book to passive mommyhood. As you read it, watch the descriptions of and parts played by Nancy, remembering that she is an active FBI agent, supposedly. Will's and Nancy's relationship borders on the soap opera mode.

I speculate that the author needed to get to a particular word count--"real" novels these days have to be a certain size--and the result was all the unnecessary descriptions. One example: the pilot and his back story. Another: the manor house and word pictures of it and the grounds, room by room, garden by garden. It felt like padding.

The flashback stories which highlighted the main plot and helped pull it together were well done, though wordy at times.

The ending tapered off, as soap operas do, into feel-good stuff....

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Balance of Function and Price, June 23, 2013

Today I was out and about and my iPhone 5 battery achieved zero. I pushed the button on the back of the Lenman Meridian Battery Case and held it for 5 seconds. The phone started charging immediately and I was back in business immediately. It took a couple of hours for a full recharge, and I was able to use the phone the entire time it was charging. Well worth every bit I spent on it.

Adds some weight and increase in dimensions to the phone, but not enough to be a deal breaker. And after a while, it feels normal. The battery weight is all at the bottom, so the phone "feels" right when it's upright. Case is textured, so it's not slippery. All in all, I'm happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Dystopian Sci Fi, June 23, 2013
This review is from: 1984 (Kindle Edition)
This is the classic dystopian sci fi that everyone references in their scare tactics, but few seem to have actually read. I suggest you read it, not least for its jaw-dropping insights into human nature and excellent plot.

We have a flock of about 40 finches and they eat this stuff by the pound. They seem to love it, so it must be good and who cares if the bag is a plain brown wrapper? Bird porn....

I take it on an empty stomach (generally 2 hours after eating). I've found it easiest to manage by taking it in the middle of the night when I usually wake up briefly anyway. Definitely then it's on an empty stomach, taken with about 4 large swallows of water, then back to sleep.

It has taken some months for full effectiveness (this is not a "magic bullet" like an antibiotic) and I would urge users to be patient. 90 count, taking 3 at night, lasts me a month.
