5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, March 23, 2001
This review is from: Becoming a Writer (Paperback)
Ms. Brande was not marketing herself or her work when she wrote this book. She had something to convey, something to teach. She does so in a practical, straightforward way. After reading 'Becoming a Writer' you will not be the same: Approached with an open mind and willingess to learn, Ms. Brande's advice is quite capable to transform the way in which you think, write and live. As all the reviewers before me have pointed out, this is a must for aspiring writers. In addition, I do believe any person whose profession involve writing, will find great rewards in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un gran libro., August 18, 2000
Altamente recomendado.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo for Carax !, July 16, 2000
This movie found me as a first year student of French and since then it has become my all-time favorite. "Les amants..." is a long and painfully crafted work that may seem, prima facie, difficult to approach. Nevertheless, when such apparent difficulty is conquered, you reach the simple joy of getting to know the work of a superior talent, plenty of unforgettable moments. Juliette Binoche's face when watching paintings at the light of a candle. Alex Lavant walking in the Paris metro tunnels, where Binoche large-sized photos cover the walls. The Seine mirroring their craziness and light... Images from the movie will haunt you with its bizarre beauty for long time. It should also be taken in account that the story beyond the scenes of the movie is a drama on its own, worth to be known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple... when explained by a master., July 15, 2000
I found this book while on the search of a simple, accesible introduction to the core principles of computer technology. "The Pattern on the Stope" not only offers such an explanation; the book communicates the great passion that Mr. Hillis has on his subject and will open your mind to its complexity and wonders. Lack of technical background is not a problem, as Mr. Hillis method is intended for all kind of readers. This book will trigger your curiosity and desire to known more about computer science and Mr. Hillis work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Salgari, an unjustly forgotten classic., July 14, 2000
Emilio Salgari wrote at least ninety books of adventures. It is astonishing that none of those works is currently avaliable in English, taking in account the quality of his books and how many fans they have over the world.
The Sandokan series is probably the most known of the series written by Salgari. The story of the pirate Sandokan, his loyal lieutenant Yanez and his beloved Mariana has all the magic of a love tale blending in a full action plot, plenty of surprises. The personages are lovable, complex, unforgettable. If you like this book you will probably love the rest of Salgari's works, specially the Lion of Damasco series, another action-packed wonder.
When I was a child Salgari's 'Capitan Storm' was avaliable in my country only in partial version. Twenty years after, I looked for a complete version in a travel to Italy, found and enjoyed reading it. I would always recommend Salgari, because his magic is a permanent one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic is in town again..., July 11, 2000
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" has been a phenomenon well before its release in July 8. Writing this personal review after finishing the book on July 10, I believe that the people that spoke about "commercial hype" must be realizing their mistake when confronted with the reality of Ms. Rowling work. Harry Potter books sell not by virtue of advertising or marketing, but because they are simply excellent and the author does her job without concessions to fame or to expectations. The result is a powerful work that can be read at multiple levels.
In "The Goblet of Fire", we not only see Harry Potter, involved in old activities and new teenage interests, described with plenty of imagination and humor. We are also made aware that his call and destiny only started the day that he and his mother defeated Voldemort. There is still a long way to go for Harry, more dangerous and complex as time goes by, a way in which he will likely grow in wisdom and comprehension. And he will not be alone in that path; in this book, the figures of Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Hagrid and so many others become more fundamental and close. Harry is not a solitary hero, he is in fact the center of a community full of ethical values, frienship and heart-warming solidarity. A world confronted with evils that are somehow the mirror image of some troubles on our day to day world.
The reader of all ages will find material for fun and though on this book, a classic on its own, beyond any literary critic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente !, June 25, 2000

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading Castro Alves..., March 12, 1999
There are few literary experiences comparable to meet this brazilian author. This book is an excellent introduction to his abolitionist poems. The whole oeuvre of Castro Alves deserve attention, and in the wait of an extensive edition of its translated works, it could be illuminating to try the portuguese editions. Whitout forget the novelized biography of the poet by Jorge Amado, a classic on its own.
