4.0 out of 5 stars Danger every 'step' of the way!, August 15, 2013
Steps Into Darkness takes the reader back to a time when the gold ol' days weren't quite as good as you think. Tom and Will find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous saboteur of a new dam, and their sleuthing to find out who has it out for them uncovers the possibility of a long-lost treasure that's part of a not-so-pleasant part of American history. Woodard writes with honesty and guts; and the plot moves at a break-neck pace with danger for Will and Tom every step of the way. There's plenty of action to keep readers turning the page, and subtle moral dilemmas to make readers think.

This story grabs the reader with the first line and doesn't let go. Woodard has created believable teen characters and plunked them down in a fascinating historical setting. Full of mystery and intrigue, this is the kind of story that even reluctant readers will stick with in order to find out what--and who--is behind the shady happenings of Shakertown as well as what secrets the main character is holding!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative!, November 8, 2012
I GREW UP TO BE PRESIDENT breathes life into U.S. history. It's fun and informative without overwhelming young readers. In addition to giving a fair overview of each president, the author has included fascinating tidbits that are sure to keep readers turning the pages. This is a must-have for all elementary classrooms and libraries, but it also would make an appealing addition to a child's bookshelves, too!

Woodard's lyrical writing adds heft to this dreamy myth-like story. As a teacher, I find the short chapters, animal characters, and subtle lessons perfect for reluctant readers. It's a great read for anyone interested in nature studies, Native American folktales, myths and legends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone (even teachers)!, January 17, 2011
I was so excited to see a new book by Becky Young. I have four of her books already, and couldn't wait to have this on my shelf. I wasn't disappointed!

This book, just like her others, is full of high-interest selections. Kids love perusing the options; always finding something that speaks to them. It shows in their performances.

From a teacher's perspective, the mono/duologues are easily slipped into the curriculum because they cover a variety of topics and are the perfect length. These mono/duologues work for developing drama skills as well as speaking and leadership skills. An added plus...they're the perfect introduction to literature connections and writing/journaling. Which, of course, can be followed by student-generated mono/duologues/plays because Young's expertly written mono/duologues provide an excellent model for student-writers.

I hope Young has more books in the works...because then kids will keep reading and performing...and writing!
