5.0 out of 5 stars great movie worth a rental, July 25, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It was a good film. A simple story, touching, well-acted, and all right for family-viewing. Worth a rental and the quality of the HD viewing experience with Amazon worked very well.

As for the comparison with the book. It captures the main plot elements of the book but of course is a different animal from the book (as all movies have to be). I personally feel the movie flowed better than the book in allowing Davey to heal. I thought the book ended too soon and the psychiatrist was a weak device from Blume in order to force the story along faster. Thankfully, the movie leaves the psychiatrist out and lets Davey heal in her own time through a different flow and pacing of the plot elements. A well-done modern adaptation to film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice blu ray upgrade without any real extras, December 21, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is more for the blu ray release than for the film itself. The movie is superb on many levels.

As for the blu ray release, it offers a slight upgrade over the dvd. It's not a crisp HD transfer as some other films offer although you can notice a slight improvement in the colors. The sound is average.

There are no extras or "making of" features other than the theatrical trailer. The blu ray case is a short booklet of pictures and brief articles on the film.

With that said, the original dvd had been hard to come by for years and so this blu ray is a welcome release. I would recommend purchasing it over the dvd for the slight upgrade in quality but don't expect an amazingly crisp HD picture. It might be worth waiting for it to drop below $20 for a better deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful children's book that adults will enjoy as well, December 22, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: French Ducks in Venice (Hardcover)
When you read French Ducks in Venice, your first thought will be that this could be adapted into a movie like one of those superb indie animated films like Secret of the Kells or the Illusionist. It has a poignant feel to it and yet it's a children's book, so you can read it on two levels (which is an immediate sign that this is a good children's book as parents could read it to their children).

The artwork is amazing, beautiful, not overdone, perfectly capturing the scenes.

The story is a touching one and when it ends it will leave you wanting to know what happens next to our "Russian princess" and her gown or wishing for further adventures involving the ducks.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful poetry from a new poet on the scene, April 18, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is just a great collection of poems, each giving you moment to pause to contemplate and dwell on their words. The poet has a vast and gifted vocabulary and a bright imagination that weaves that vocabulary together into a fine tapestry of images. A gem of a collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, April 18, 2009

This review is from: Clare and Francis (DVD)
Saint Ignatius press has published a number of excellent Italian films on the lives of the saints. This one is definitely one of their best. I don't think I ever watched a more powerful and honest portrayal of Francis and Clare. I highly recommend this film. If you're looking for a film on Saint Francis, this is the one to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like master replicas, December 5, 2008
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I received my fx lightsaber and from what i can tell from videos of master replicas, these are the same quality, construction and appearance. It's like hasbro just took over the designs of them and squarely kept to them. The battery hatch is a bit difficult to slide open on first try, but if you remove the arrow sticker it will easily slide off. It's durable and the sounds are nice. The hilt is made mostly of metal. Comes with a sturdy display stand. If you had been waiting on these, curious if they matched up to the older master replica ones as I had been, I'd say your wait is over. Go buy one.

5.0 out of 5 stars great dvd introduction to Theology of the Body, November 24, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent way to start in learning Theology of the Body. Perfect for church groups. West gives four talks on the basics of Theology of the Body along with question/answers for further discussion. I would recommend that you also pick up the study guides for your group too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ordered when you have the companion dvd, November 24, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This study guide is used for the DVD series by Christopher West of the same name. It basically lists his talking points for the series. The leader's guide also gives some further information so that you can better lead a study group. I wouldn't recommend that you buy this on its own but only if you are also buying the dvd.

5.0 out of 5 stars great companion for Buffy: Chosen Set, November 24, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you came to this page you have probably already seen the series in reruns or when it originally aired so your question might be if you should shell out money on this set.

If you already own the Buffy:Chosen set, I can tell you that this is an excellent companion set. It's designed in the same exact fashion. I think it's exactly what Whedon fans wanted and have been waiting for the Angel series. If you already own all the original season dvds of Angel, then this might not be the best deal for you as you won't get much else.

Still, it's a great space saver, very well-organized, and fits nicely beside the Buffy set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film from many angles, November 24, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maria Goretti (DVD)
I was really impressed and moved by this film. It uses some artistic liberty in telling the story of Maria Goretti but it remains faithful to the core of her life. Some films based on lives of Saints will take an unreal approach to its story and characters and I sort of expected it here, so I was really surprised by the strength of the writing, character development, and acting! Each member of the cast fully realizes his/her character. And even though you know and expect the ending, when it comes, you can't help but cry. It's a very touching and powerful portrait of Maria Goretti.
