2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 1, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There was enough information in this book for a good magazine article. The author made up the difference by telling the story several times. The most interesting portion was the short chapter containing first person accounts of two cruisers sunk during the Japanese foray into the Indian Ocean in 1942.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Read for the Native American Side of the LBH, August 12, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've read many a book about the Little Bighorn but Michno's two ( this and The Mystery of E Troop) are at or on the top of the list. Lakota Noon is a fascinating compilation of Native American accounts of the battle woven together into a smooth and very readable narrative. Highly recommended.

Excellent, well researched and written telling of the Bozeman Trail war. Many new details brought to light and misinformation corrected. Probably the definitive history of the place and period.

5.0 out of 5 stars History of Bovington, April 27, 2015

This review is from: Bovington Tanks (Paperback)
This is more a history of England's tank training camp and the wonderful museum of today than of the armored weapon. But it is an interesting and engaging history written by GB's foremost tank writer. Great photos of the camp and Brit tanks through the years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A negelected theater, April 27, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wings of the Dawning (Hardcover)
More of a series of vignettes than a history in the classic sense and very 'Brit' in its presentation. But the author does not claim to be an historian and has gone to great trouble to track down the included tales. Covers an area of WWII that is unfortunantely nearly ignored and is interesting for that reason alone. The illustrations are classic and worth the cost of the book themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Researched, April 27, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Well researched and very readable. I prefer Pennington's version of the events of the 'last stand' but this analysis is quite possible and well supported with sources. A good addition to the LBH library.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Not the Best on WWI Certainly Close, December 20, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Another excellent effort by Hart. Noone does a better job of interweaving narrative with participant quotations. I own all his books and look forward to more. If you are interested in the "Great War" you can't do better than to study it via these volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of WWI Badges, May 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the most easily used, comprehensive book on Brit cap badges that I have found and certainly does an excellent job of covering the WWI badges. It has separate sections on Cavalry, Infantry, Yeomanry, Territorial and Service battalions, and Arms and Services (such as the Tank Corp, RE, RA etc). There is also a good intro on the importance of the badges, history, how they were made, etc. If there is any area in which I wish the book went into more detail it is in how to spot fakes and restrikes, although some points are given to watch out for. The book has already helped me in deciding what badges to add to my collection and made me much more choosey about which ones to acquire. If you are collecting badges or thinking of collecting or just want to learn more about the ones you already have, this is definately the volume to pick up. More than worth the price! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect compliment to the frescoes series, April 18, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you've loved any or all of the five luscious volumes on Italian frescoes published by Abbeville or even if you haven't seen them, you'll love this stunning look at the mosaics that, for the most part, came before the painting. This is a fabulous tour from Sicily to Ravenna, with beautiful photos of the mosaics and just enough commentary. Poeschek gives us a comprehensive tour of each cycle and a bit of the history and various interpretations (well footnoted), but doesn't get bogged down in academic details. This is definately a book for the art aficionado, not the professional art historian. If you've seen any of these mosaics you'll find a wonderful reminder of their beauty (and learn more than the guidebook told you) and if you haven't, this is a perfect armchair tour with the same type of high-quality, well-selected photos that grace the frescoe books. The highlights include:

-Cathedral of Monreale (at 85,000 sq ft the largest cycle in Italy)and other great cycles in Sicily
-San Marco, Venice
-San Vitale and the other major sites in Ravenna
-Roman sites including Santa Maria Maggiore, Santa Maria in Trastevere, San Clemete and the incredible Santi Comas and Damiano among others.
-Florence Baptistry

An absolutely wonderful book. Highly recommendedl
