Watery consistency. It has some bite but is largely a watered-down flavor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old Hat, September 9, 2014
My reaction to this book is, so what? The author outlines facts that are not new, and her biases are clearly showing. A far better book on the subject is “A Calculated Risk: The U.S. Decision to Recognize Israel” by Evan M. Wilson, who worked on the Near Desk at the State Department when the events unfolded. Because of his front-row seat, his book is far more authoritative than Ms. Weir’s, who seems to have an axe to grind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Senseless Sacrifices, September 1, 2014
This review is from: Baghdad ER (Amazon Instant Video)
It was painful to watch so many young, brave dedicated men suffering horrific injuries. Their heroism is matched by that of the doctors and nurses who save the lives of 90 percent of the injured soldiers. It may be hard to watch, but it's compelling and sobering. The cost of the Iraq war should be calculated not in dollars and cents but by the number of casualties. Unfortunately, most of the scars and wounds are not visible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening Review of a failed relationship, March 5, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In his dealings with Stalin, FDR had a blind spot. He considered Churchill an imperialist and Stalin a democrat. FDR drove Soviet experts such as George Kennan to distraction with his apologist and sycophantic attitude toward Stalin. FDR preferred the opinions of such pro-Soviet toadies as Joseph Davies, a former ambassador to the Soviet Union. Roosevelt virtually gave away Eastern Europe to Stalin, and we paid a heavy price for his shortsightedness.

Anyone who's seen the film "Mission to Moscow," a first-class piece of pro-Soviet propaganda that came back to haunt Warner Bros. in the post-war world, can see first hand how Davies' apologist views attempted to twist American public opinion. An excellent book that may change how Americans view FDR.

1.0 out of 5 stars Biased Trash, March 5, 2014
If you're looking for objective reporting, you won't find it here. The film is so weighed down with loaded, pro-Muslim, anti-Israeli "reporting" that anyone with a journalistic background has to blush. According to the narrator, the Palestinians were "driven out" of Israel. He seems oblivious to the fact that the Palestinians were encouraged and even coerced to leave Israel by Arab countries and Palestinian agitators.

The narrator makes no attempt to qualify his words with such terms such as alleged, purported and seemingly. It's all flagrant propaganda. His teacher was probably Joseph Goebbels. For journalism students, the film is an example of how not to report an event or situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb early war film, February 1, 2014
The quality of the print is excellent, pristine. The story of five RAF crewmen who bail out over Holland is riveting. As he story unfolds, we see them seek their way back to England with the invaluable help of the Dutch Resistance, who are at first skeptical. Is this a Nazi trick or a genuine incident? The townspeople cooperate in many ways in their efforts to protect the crew. The acting and direction is first rate.

There is a strong thread of patriotism that runs through the film, but because it is integral to the story there is no need for self-conscious tinges of melodrama and histrionics. Indeed, the film is punctuated with lighthearted touches. Very highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Use Commonsense, November 6, 2013
There are far less expensive products on the market. In fact, one vitamin company sells separate bottles of krill oil and calamari that, when bought separately, are far less than half the cost of what Marine Essentials charges. The "extra" ingredient in ME's products -- Seanol-P, was probably added to increase the price. And Vitamin D is inexpensive and found in drug stores.

Look for less expensive products, which is what I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anti-Catholicism -- What are the justifications?, February 2, 2013
You can tell from the title of the book,"The Last Acceptable Prejudice." that it is a gross overstatement that hopes to elicit sympathy for the "plight" of America's Roman Catholics.

I make two distinctions between anti-Catholic sentiments: 1) the often mindless discrimination against Catholics that, although it exists, is often overblown, 2)the justifiable resentment against the Vatican and Church dogma, Catholic meddling in American politics and the pronouncements of Catholic extremists who serves as the Vatican's attack dogs, e.g., Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia and actor Mel Gibson.

Many efforts toward fighting anti-Catholicism are directed at explaining away church excesses: The condemnation of Galileo and other progressive thinkers as heretics; anti-Semitism that destroyed tens of thousands of Jews or led to their cofinement (e.g., the Rome Ghetto), the imposition of film censorship based on Catholic moralty and the flagrant hatred of Jewish studio owners and executives.

Friction between Protestant Evangelicals and Catholics is the latest manifestation of perceived anti-Catholicism and corresponding anti-Protestantism. As Evangelicals seek to convert Mexican immigrants to their faith, Catholics will continue to see themselves as under attack.

"The Last New Ant-Catholicism" tries hard but fails to be truly convincing. The more one knows of history, the less likely one will accept the book's premises. As long as Pope Benedict makes such absurd claims as gay marriage is a threat to world peace, the church will keep shooting itself in the foot. No number of books can counter that.

Nevertheless. "The New Anti-Catholicism" (which is really just a continuation of the old anti-Catholicism) is fascinating reading. However, until the Vatican posts a sign that reads "Under New Manaqement" it will remain a futile effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only they gave Academy Awards for Most Repulsive Film, January 30, 2013
This review is from: The Human Centipede (DVD)
The film is both compelling and utterly repulsive and ghastly. As the mad fiend was "constructing" his centipede, I doubt there wasn't a viewer who wasn't preoccupied by -- to put it as delicately as possible -- the ultimate step in the human digestive process.

Nevertheless, I found it difficult not to chuckle at the obviously distasteful thoughts that must have been running through the minds of the unfortunate victims. Let's hope that no one has beans for lunch.

It's easy for people to say that the film is "sick" and that only a deranged person could come up with such a story. To them I say, "get off your high horse." Creativity doesn't always have to yield great artistic works. Yes, the film's premise is disgusting, but if it moved you in one way or another, then it served a purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thorough View of the U Boat War, January 17, 2013
This Spanish-produced three-part series will certainly appeal to submarine enthusiasts and World War II buffs. It contains details often omitted from other U Boat videos. The only weak point is the narrator's mispronunciations of German names. For example, Karl Doenitz sounds more like "donuts." Highly recommended.
