5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Concise Accurate Book on the Creeds and Councils of the Christian Church -- an Easy to Understand!, July 12, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This short concise book is another great addition to the "Know" series that Zondervan is publishing. In this volume we are given a quick tour of the Creeds and Catechisms that have developed throughout the centuries since the Church was established It also gives an excellent overview of the many different "councils" that took place to help put together the Creeds.

Justin Holcomb again gives us a good book that can be used as a discussion starter for small groups as well as a book that will give a basic education to the laity in regards to the history of the Creeds and Councils that have defined the Christian Church for centuries.

I highly recommend this for anyone who needs a brush up on their history or is just looking into these items for the very first time. I think it will also be a great book for Pastors to use as part of a series of books to help educate their congregants that are joining their church and need some basic foundational grounding.

4.0 out of 5 stars War over the Falklands reignites between Argentina and England -- But how does that involve Jake?, July 12, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Another great story in the Rogue Submarine series. Jake is back at the helm of a sub and in the thick of conflict, this time in Argentine waters as the Argentine military tries again to take the Malvinas Islands (The Falklands) away from the British. Jake will face not just one navy's submarines but two navies submarines. He will find that two particular boat commanders are very good at their job and it is just short of miracles that keep Jake from death.

I enjoy the aspect of Jake questioning the existence of God. His white keeps me grounded that God exists. The Priest of their parish has become one of Jakes confidant's and also keeps him wondering about the existence of God. But Jake is stubborn and he doesn't want to give in to the "religious" side of life any time too soon.

This is a quick read, but full of action, intrigue, deception and politics. I'm sure that if you have enjoyed the other Rogue Submarine books you will enjoy this edition. John Monteith again uses his insider's knowledge to give us good info about the weapon systems and tactics that are used by the military. It's a solid read.

I gave it four stars because of some minor things that I felt could have been written a bit tighter. But John is developing well as a writer. I'm sure that his future books are going to be ones that I will want to pick up.

This is an "Advanced Reader Copy" so you need to know that there are some grammar issues and some typo's. Those should be corrected when the final version is released.

Enjoy the adventure!

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch you Six! Backstabbing and Deception are the realities of the job, July 11, 2014

I enjoyed the book but didn't think it was up to the quality of the other books in this series. Robie and Reel are back and involved in an impossible mission, or is it two missions, or maybe three? The two of them are amazing and can handle anything that is thrown at them even when it is unexpected.

But my hesitation with this book is the fact that Baldacci has two many plot lines (story lines) running throughout the book. If you really stop to break it down you will find at least four different stories. They each are important and they each need their own development. I just felt that it was a weakly written book because the different story lines diluted the entire book. I did not think that the attempt to pull the stories together was well done, it felt forced.

We are introduced to several new characters and they are developed well, but there is too much to absorb for one book.

So, am I saying that maybe he should have made two or three books out of this? Yes! I know that doesn't float well with those of us who are buying the books, but I think I would prefer three well written, well developed stories instead of a rambling shifting story line that seems weakened and diluted because of the vast number of story developments at once.

Now, with that said, I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed seeing the development of the relationship between Robie and Reel. They are growing more trusting of each other and more in tune with each other. They truly care about each other and are willing to go the extra mile to protect and serve each other.

They know that the Director of the CIA is setting them up to fail, or at best be killed in the performance of their duty. But they trust each other to do what needs to be done and survive. How they will do that is what keeps you reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a Work Horse for you Small Business or Home, July 8, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been using this printer now for a couple of weeks. So far it lives up to it's billing. It gives fast, clear, crisp printouts and the color is truly excellent. The printer lives up to the speeds that it says it will give you the copies. The wireless feature is great, I can print from all my wireless devices from anywhere in our home.

Saying this is a WorkForce printer is correct. It is well constructed, heavy duty and should have a good long life as a performer. I would recommend it for any home use or small business use. It would be a great device for a system wide printer for any small business.

The only down side in my opinion is again the price of ink cartridges and the amount of prints that you get out of them. This is the most expensive part of the machine (as is true of all small printers).

I did use some photo quality paper for prints that I wanted to make and they came out excellent. The wide printing path is also a nice feature.

All in all I think this is a great product for the price.

Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War
Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War

Edition: Hardcover
Price: $20.51

5.0 out of 5 stars The Civil War as you have never seen it before, July 8, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What a good book this turned out to be. I wasn't sure what I was going to think of it because it is not a Novel and it is written more as a history of the Civil War from the lives of four women who had strategic roles in the conflict. Each of the four women had different parts to play and they played them to perfection.

The book holds your attention by traveling back and forth from one of the four to another. We have the young girl who was a tomboy and as such cut her hair, dressed as a man and joined the Union Army. What she witnessed is just downright awful, the blood, the gore, the severed limbs was overwhelming, but still she persisted.

The temptress living in Washington DC and sending notes to the Confederate Army was pretty interesting as well. She appears to have been well known to the Union officials and yet they still went to her home, were seduced and gave up information. Were they really that naive to think she wasn't passing it along?

Parts of the book are just hard to read and think that it could have happened the way it did. The brutality of each side against the other. The intentional killing of the wounded without giving any thought to mercy. They stealing and destroying of the land that was so unnecessary and doesn't speak well for the moral's of either side and of the officers that allowed these things to happen.

You will be intrigued, amazed, disgusted and drawn in by all that happens in this tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amish Community in Pinecraft, Floria, REALLY, July 5, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have read many Amish novels and have enjoyed most of them. I thought that they all were bit the same and they usually ended the same. But this one had some twists and turns that I didn't expect.

First of all the Amish man, Jacob Miller, has lost his wife after the birth of two children. He is alone and a lonely. The Amish community would love to see him remarry and there are many candidates. But Jacob has not decide yet that it is time to move on.

The scene of the story is not in Amish country. While Jacob Miller and his two kids are from Ohio and an Amish community they have traveled to Pinecraft, Florida, to see his in-laws and allow the children to have time with them. While they are there his daughter Rebecca is hit by a car while cross the street and serious injured. She is take to the hospital to set a broken femur and to access any neurological issues.

While in the hospital a young women comes in dressed like a clown to try and cheer her up. She does this all the time on the Pediatrics ward. It is Christmas and she wants to do something special. Natalie Bennet is a wonderful young woman with a heart of gold. But the Amish clan captures her heart, for more reasons than just tragedy.

It seems as though Natalie Bennet's mother has roots in the Amish community. Her mother fled the Amish and joined the circus and became quite the acrobat.

Natalie has found this out and wants more about the roots of her mother, Katie Yoder. She starts asking questions and becomes friends with Jacob's family.

To make a long love story short, things progress and develop, but Natalie is not ready to leave the English lifestyle and Jacob is prone to hold to his Amish beliefs. So, what will happen. That answer will come as you read the book.

The writing is very good. Just when I thought an Amish story could have a new twist, here it comes. An Amish community living in Pinecraft, Florida. A world away from Ohio and their roots. Now stuck in this community for six months while his daughter heals, what will Jacob do and how will Natalie handle things.

I liked the premise, I liked the setting and felt that Lynette Sowell wrote a very compelling story that is so close to reality that it makes you feel that it actually happened. I loved the writing, I loved the characters, I loved the plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars What happens when you run away from a lost love / bad breakup? Will Peyton just fall into the same trap again?, July 5, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Peyton Lacoumette is a great Physician's Assistant and she has hooked up with a doctor in Portland, Oregon, who appears to be the perfect man. But after years of dating and even living together Peyton comes to see him for the true Selfish man that he is. He has taken advantage of Peyton and she regrets it. He has three kids from a previous marriage who are holy terrors and they hate Peyton. They do everything they can to make her life miserable.

After enough heartache Peyton decides to end the relationship. That means not only the loss of a place to live and a relationship with a great doctor, but the loss of her job as she worked for the doctor in his office.

So, now with no future, no where to go and no ideas she starts to drive. She stops in a small town in Oregon, along the beach, called Thunder Point. She answers an ad for a Physician Assistant at the only doctor's office in the area. She meets Doctor Scott and he extends an offer to her for work. The pay in terrible, being a small town, but she takes it for 90 days so that she has something to do while searching for a dream job.

She is feed up with men and wants nothing to do with them. She just needs space. But Doctor Scott is a widower and has two children. Peyton meets his kids and sees a completely different family than the previous doctor she served. Scott is a widower, having lost his wife right after the birth of his child.

He loves his job, he loves his kids, and he loves his community. He is also the most gentle, loving, caring person a patient could ever want.

But Peyton has not time for him. She just wants to run away from the last relationship.

But the forces of nature are pushing against her. Will she fall under the spell of another doctor? Will she care about his kids? Will she find the small town medicine rewarding?

All those questions need to be answered.

Robyn Carr does a masterful job of setting up the plot, developing the characters and giving you a desire to see love win out in the end. The book is a great read. I couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Will Terrorist Be Able to Take Control of Israeli Military Jets and destroy the country of Israel?, July 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
How frightening would it be to have control of an Air Force Jet and be set to do your task when all of a sudden the plane seems to develop a mind of it's own and won't respond to your control. As an Israeli Air Force pilot who is highly trained, Ido Barnea finds himself out of control and headed towards a residential area where a crash would be devastating. He manages to maneuver the aircraft a different direction and ejects before the plan crashes in the desert.

But now comes the troublesome part. They think that he has lost control as a pilot of his emotions and that he may have intentionally tried to crash the plane into the residents. No one believes him about how the plane took over on it's own mind and wouldn't allow him to fly it.

As he starts to try and find out what happened he gets involved with a conspiracy that is meant to take over control of aircraft and cause terroristic acts against the nation of Israel and bring it to a point of war with the countries around it while loosing favor with Europe and America as allies.

Murder, deception, kidnapping, torture and computer programs that are being seeded into the F-16 fleet are just the tip of the iceberg that Ido finds himself in. When those trying to frame him realize that they can't seem to catch him they decide to do the next best thing. To hurt or murder those he loves or associates with and make it look like he is the culprit.

Will Ido prevail? Oh, and throw in a beautiful Mossad Agent that Ido falls in love with and things really heat up.

The writing was not as good as I had hoped for, but it was good for a first novel. I really hope that Aharoni will develop in his writing style and continue to give us good military / mystery books following Ido Barnea and his beautiful Mossad counterpart.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Chronological Bible, just disappointing in the esthetics of the layout, July 3, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm really torn about what rating to give this new Bible from Zondervan. It is a chronological Bible using the NIV text. I think that the Bible does a very good job of pulling together the scriptures in their chronological setting and giving you a good overview of not just the history of the Bible but let's you see how the Prophets fit in with the overall history of Israel.

I did also like how in the New Testament when they laid out the genealogy of Jesus they included Old Testament Text's that also had the names of the forefathers that are part of the genealogy of Jesus. This is not something I have seen in other chronological Bibles and I liked what they did.

So, why did I give it only three stars?

Well, mainly because I have been spoiled by another Chronological Bible that was developed and printed by Thomas Nelson. Their Bible not only does the Chronology but they put in background notes on the different eras of the Bible. They give you good study notes that guide you through why the chronology is the way they have developed it.

Also, quite frankly, their Bible is much more pleasing to the eye because of the wonderful way that they printed it. The colors, the headings and the highlights are absolutely fabulous. They use the New King James Version and I found that it was a pleasant version to read.

The NIV Integrated Bible that Zondervan has published it not that pleasing to the eye. The text is a bit small (for someone my age) and at times certain pages just seemed crammed together.

This is a silly point to dislike, but it was what I experienced.

This is not a bad Chronological Bible, I just happened to like the Thomas Nelson one better

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Primer on the subject of Heretics., July 3, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What a wonderful short book about the main Heresies that arose in the early times of the developing Christian Church. I have read many different books on this subject over the years but found that this was one that I could quickly devour and then recommend to the many students and congregation members that I know would love to learn about this subject.

I think the "Know" series of books is a great way for small groups to go through a topic together and learn. After having read through this I'm going to get 10 copies for our small group and we are going to make this as our first study this fall. Some of the heresies that he writes about are well known and some not so much. But what is interesting is that all of these heresies started long ago but if you start to understand them you can see that they are still present in our culture today. Many people are being swayed away from the Bible and the true Gospel Message because they at times feel God is harsh. They just don't fully understand His nature.

But when you think God is harsh or cruel or mean then you have a tendency to try and soften the message or the text of scripture and that leads to false teaching and leading people astray.

If you have never read anything about the Heretics that confused the early church members then this wonderful little book is perfect for your primer on the topic.
