1.0 out of 5 stars Great film, horrid DVD., February 5, 2007
This review is from: Fist of the White Lotus (DVD)
If you're looking for bootleg DVDs with bootleg "quality," here you go. Red Sun or whatever their name is, is a bootleg company that steals the image quality from Hong Kong DVDs and sells it as their own. They then put out crappy bootlegs like this here and have their stooges post how great they are so you buy their releases. The dvds are poor, have audio and image issues, and fall apart in a year or so. If that sounds "Great," "superior," etc. please feel free to buy this release. If not, get the actual releases from Hong Kong for cheaper prices and see something great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun film, poor release., January 17, 2007
This review is from: New Legend of Shaolin (DVD)
This is a fun film and one of the few from the period where Jet just seems to have some fun and go off. But this is a pretty sorry release for it. So Tai Seng is releasing widescreen laser disc masters again? Niiicccee. Wait for a better release. At least that one might not have a Ric Meyers commentary on there. If there's a sure sign of a lack of care from a company releasing kung fu films, it's Meyers' name anywhere on the product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great film, bad DVD., January 17, 2007
This review is from: Once Upon a Time in China #1 (DVD)
The quality of this release is pretty poor for such a classic (four or five star) HK film. Visually, it may be the worst release of this film anywhere in the world. And then they saddle it with a Ric Meyers "commentary" sealing the deal that no one should be buying this. If you want to learn little more than incorrect info about a film, listen to this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN!, January 11, 2007
This review is from: The Boxer's Omen (DVD)
Excellent DVD of a great cult film. And don't worry about the language the previous review mentions. Considering the reviewer is from France, it's unlikely they've even seen this release to make a judgement on the quality of the disc, which is the best this film has ever seen in any form. No matter, by this time, Shaw Brothers Studios were dubbing and releasing their films in Cantonese and Mandarin in theaters at the same time. Considering there's at least three or more languages spoken in the film, the studio had their own dubbers, who usually were not the stars of the film anyway. So there's no "correct" soundtrack for this film, no matter what the "experts" will tell you. It won't affect you're enjoyment of the movie in any way.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT overview!!, November 3, 2006
Perhaps the best place to read a good overview of Asian film for a beginner. It also helps that the editor has chosen a who's who of writers to do bits on different topics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting for it's length..., November 3, 2006
but quite often the asides in the book appear to be what is found on the internet. Many of the entries for director and sometimes actors are incorrect. This makes the cross referencing mentioned above useless.

and excellent disc from Image. The film is top notch for fun, and it's got some pretty cool extras as well. It's very nice to see a legit company coming out with REAL Shaw Brothers dvds that aren't bootlegs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk..., October 23, 2006
This review is from: Lion Vs Lion (DVD)
the film is okay, but the dvd is a bootleg. The image has simply been stolen from the Hong Kong dvd, and not well I might add. The film is owned by Dragon Dynasty in the US and should be coming out in the next year or so. If you want to support theif and poor bootleg DVDs, feel free to throw your support behind this one. If you have to see the film, get a region free dvd player for $40 and the world is your oyster! You can get most HK dvds of the Shaw Brothers films for around $10 INCLUDING shipping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't make a mistake..., October 23, 2006
and buy this thinking you are getting a great DVD. You're getting a bootleg. This has a great picture because Red Sun simply copied the HK DVD of IVL in Hong Kong after Celestial spent millions of dollars remastering these films. The DVD has poor NTSC conversion (meaning, it will look BAD on higher end TVs) because you can't do proper conversions of dvds from HK without the original materials. And bootleggars of course don't have original materials. If you want to support boots, and make sure that the U.S. continues to get very few quality kung fu releases, buy the DVD. IF you want to see the films, and not ruin their chances of being picked up here so all the US can see them properly, just get a region free player and buy the actual discs these guys copy. You can get the real dvds they make copies for the SAME price, so why not support actual people the work on these releases?
