4.0 out of 5 stars Good but recycled, May 26, 2009
This review is from: Death Magnetic (Audio CD)
Death Magnetic is far better than the St Anger and Load sessions Although Load has some good stuff, it was not Metallica metal music. With Death Magnetic there is a bit of a return to pre-Bob Rock days. The album here is much harder and faster than we have heard from Hetfield and boys for over a decade. I like this work, but I keep feeling like this is a forced effort and something is missing specifically the musical epics and themes are missing here. There are a lot of solid riffs here and jam sessions with decent lyrics, but this doesnt sound like a band with creative musical abilities that gave us Creeping Death, One or even Enter Sandman. I like that they tried to go back and give us a new instrumental piece with "Suicide and Redemption", but again, there seems to be a missing element here where the music used seemed to make sense together. We can hear recycled music efforts of Master of Puppets, Battery, One, Dyers Eve and the For Whom the Bell Tolls.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mesh of genres, July 7, 2008
In a similar fashion to her tenure with Nightwish, Tarja pulls off a cinematic and operatic plays against soundscapes of heavy guitars and new age orchestrial sounds. This album is close to her Nightwish work, but definitely hers (except maybe the Alice Cooper cover). You will hear some sounds like Enya, gothic Nightwish (closest to "Deep Silent Complete" and "Sleeping Sun"), Wagner and Mahler classical, traditional folk music, and progressive Dream Theater.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 for a good 80's original, May 23, 2008
This review is from: Pride (Audio CD)
This is the sophomore release by White Lion in 1987 and came on the heals of success by Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and Van Halen. Catchy riffs and great lyrics, good vocals and melodic work help to make this a rather enjoyable work even against today's rock music. Vitto's guitar is stunning!

This contains their major break-throughs and top 10 hit (Wait and When the Children Cry). The latter is adorned as one of the best power ballads ever written. In addition, Lady of the Valley and Tell Me are awesome releases as well. Only a couple tracks otherwise werent top notch and thus the 4.5 rating instead of 5. Lady of the Valley is best in its studio form and needs to be heard here before hearing the various live versions.

If anyone enjoys guitar music, this is a must own. If you enjoy 80 metal music, this is a must own. If you are a White Lion fan, you can not do without. Nothing they wrote before and after compares well to this album except maybe Little Fighter and the cover of Radar Love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets better and better each time I listen, May 12, 2008

The nuiansces in this release are compelling enough to not catch everything in a couple listening sessions. My favorites on this piece are the last 2 tracks, but In the Presence of Enemies Part 2 almost requires IPE part 1 (especially since they like to play these together in concert). This album gets as heavy as their Train and Awake albums, but theatrical and thematic like Six Degrees and Scenes from a Memory. This album is great snapshot of their capabilities.

I want to giver 4.5 - 5 stars but there are some vocal snippets that just didnt sound right. Given that, the work is masterfully done and encompasses rich textures, deep lyrics, great musical theme development, wild contrasts, and superb muscianship!

5.0 out of 5 stars Active music, September 10, 2007
This review is from: Retro Active (Audio CD)
This CD is packed with fast pace music gems (cept for two acoustic spots) that come from the earlier Hysteria sessions. So there are some Clarke goodies here too. You can hear the distinctive Pyromania-Hysteria style here that was their bread and butter for the 80s. Miss You in a Heartbeat and Two Steps Behind have acoustic and electric versions (of which I think the electric is better). Desert Song, Fractured Love, Ride Into the Sun and Ring of Fire (compares a bit to Run Riot) are just awesome pieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious fun for the whole family!, December 2, 2005
From the makers of Shrek and Shrek 2 comes a rolling-over hilarious comedy. Four animal friends from the Central Park Zoo find themselves onboard a ship to Madagascar thanks, in part, to the help of some pengiuns. Once there, they face the challenges of the unknown wild. It is a riot of fun and laughter from the opening scenes to ending credits for all ages and hardly a dull moment. Although the tribal lemurs could have toned down a bit, the film takes advantage of creative voices from Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith to give life to the characters.

Additionally, the disc set comes with a Christmas special starring the penguins from this movie. This is a fun little short as well and worth the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good her last one, but it does well, November 22, 2005
This review is from: Amarantine (Audio CD)
An avid fan of Enya and this album is good but I can not say it edged me into bliss like "A Day Withou Rain" or quite as good as "Watermark" and "Shepard Moons".

"It's in the Rain" this is a fun track. "The River Sings" just makes you want to get up dance around in wonderful array of flower petals in meadows. "Long Long Journey" does well too.

"Sumiregusa" (Wild Violet) is Japanese haiku graciously extended in the CD from an abrupt online sample (due to a mishap with Panasonic). It is one of her better slower ballads.

"Someone Said Goodbye", "A Moment Lost" and "Drifting" are rather morose melodramas especially with the latter. You can just feel the tears falling down her face with this track inspired by the dark viola and bass samples.

This is an album for the Enya faithful and perhaps it may grow on me, but for now, I thank Enya for giving us something new. I do hope that this is not her last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great live set from Tiesto, November 22, 2005
Here is another great set from the Dutch DJ. This CD takes you on a ride from start to finish through mountains of flowing and thumping music. Great tracks from Jan Johnston, Ballroom, Insigma, The Auranaunt and Utah Saints are played in a live session in Los Angeles "just to help you get your groove on". Prepare for a wild ride and beat from Tiesto in this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great live set from Tiesto, November 22, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This Magik volume is a live set from DJ Tiesto in Amsterdam. It, like his stage performances, are high energy. It includes the dancefloor anthem Delerium's "Silence" (with Sarah McLachlan). Tiesto is fine tuning his craft in this CD into a real gem. He has as much fun producing and playing the music as people have listening. Of course, you can hardly pass a Tiesto set without feeling the groove and music, and this is no exception! This one and the live set Magik 7: Live in LA are worthy CDs if you have never seen Tiesto live and wanted to hear what its like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of Enya material, November 22, 2005
Although I am not much of a fan for Greatest Hits-type albums, this one is worth the purchase because it includes two warm tracks of "Only If..." and "Paint the Sky With Stars". Above all, this is a collection of Enya's finest work including the monumental "Orinoco Flow" and includes other great work like "Book of Days", "China Roses" and "Watermark". The track "On My Way Home" has some added stereo reverb from the album release on "Memory of Trees". For those who are interested in getting some of the best of her work or simply hearing what she can do, this is a fine collection. For those who are big fans of Enya, the two new tracks are enough reason to buy. Of course, you have to include "A Day Without Rain" and "Watermark". Looking forward to her new one.
