4.0 out of 5 stars The Big Easy, January 16, 2016

It is so much fun to discover a great writer. I started reading James Lee Burke because I read a blurb in which Michael Connelly (my favorite writer) recommended him. This my second Burke book. The Neon Rain is set in New Orleans in the 1980's. It is the first Dave Robicheaux novel. The writing is superb. One "feels" the Big Easy. The plot keeps you turning pages and is a quick read. There is a lot of Harry Bosch in Dave Robicheaux (or is it the other way around). Great Read.(2)

5.0 out of 5 stars The great TR, January 12, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Mr. McCullough's "Mornings on Horseback" is an account of the early life of Theodore Roosevelt. I have read a number of books on the life of this extraordinary man (I still feel the 3 volume Edmund Morris work is the definitive biography of President Roosevelt). This volume focuses on the Roosevelt family and life in the late 19th century. Mr. McCullough's belief is that his early family life strongly shaped TR's persona. This is very nice, one volume introduction to TR. It is also nice complimentary work that fleshes out his family life. GREAT READ!!(1)

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange, December 31, 2015
This is my first venture into reading Phillip K Dick. It is 17 years after the end of WWII and Japan and Germany won the war. I liked the novel's premise and enjoyed it's alternating plot lines. I even think I "got it" on some level. The ending left me thinking and feeling "WTF!?!?". Very strange!!(37)

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Gold, December 31, 2015
This is my first James Lee Burke book. What a great read. The novel is set in Texas in the post WWII oil boom era. It traces the exploits of Weldon Holland as he returns from WWII. The writing is outstanding, the characters are well developed and the plot keeps you guessing until the final page. Outstanding!!(36)

This review is from: The Crossing (Bosch) (Hardcover)
The Crossing is Michael Connelly's latest addition to the Harry Bosch series. This stuff never gets old. Harry is crossing over to the other side ... he is hired by his half brother Mickey Haller to investigate a murder. The writing is outstanding, the plot intricate, the characters fully developed. It does not get any better than this!!(35)

4.0 out of 5 stars Going Home, December 15, 2015

This review is from: Avenue of Mysteries (Hardcover)
It is hard to review John Irving. The World According to Garp, Cider House Rules and A Prayer for Owen Meany are three of the best books I have ever read. The Avenue of Mysteries falls somewhere in the middle of the second tier. If you've never read John Irving this is not a good place to start. His writing style is unique and his plots have a mystical quality and The Avenue of Mysteries is no exception. The story is littered with Irving staples: dwarfs, transvestites, orphans, heroes, fools and, of course, a circus. This a story about going home. It is full of mystery and love and the threads that make up our lives.(34)

The Girl in the Spider's Web: A Lisbeth Salander novel, continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series
The Girl in the Spider's Web: A Lisbeth Salander novel, continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series
by David Lagercrantz
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $16.77
208 used & new from $7.26

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!, December 15, 2015
The new addition to the Millennium Series by David Lagercrantz is outstanding. I think the negative reviews are nitpicking the plot, the pace and the characters in way that is just not fair. Mr. Lagercrantz has taken the key elements and characters from Stieg Larrson's first three books and moved the forward in a very enjoyable, fast paced read. It takes awhile for Salander to appear but once she does the plot rockets along. Great read, well developed characters, outstanding plot. Welcome back, Lisbeth!!(33)
