3.0 out of 5 stars No tutus for the Act III Pas de Action? What happened?, July 8, 2012
This review is from: Raymonda [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I was thrilled to see a new release on blu ray of one my favorite ballets shown as a pre-order. There are two versions already on dvd: One by the Bolshoi Ballet and one by the Paris Opera Ballet. They are both excellent but being on standard dvd the video quality cannot compare to blu ray. Watching ballet at home on my HD TV has replaced going to see it live as the admission tickets are priced for the rich these days. $25 being the cheapest(that's the highest I ever paid for an orchestra seat)to $125. Add to that having to drive to the theater, find parking, annoying people seating near you talking or coughfing. I don't think so.
So I waited with anticipation and decided to check if YouTube had any highlights and they did. I watched the solos with lovely Olesia Novikova and was delighted. Until I saw the Act III pas de Action(which is the leading couple's pas de deux with 6 couples behind them, that makes it a pas de action). Traditionally this dance is performed wearing beautiful short tutus that may have some details to give them a hungarian touch. But in this production all couples wear costumes that look out of La Sylphide or even native american. what's with the purse on the ladies' skirts and the feather on the leading ballerina's head? Why did they have to ruin this beautiful production with this humongous mistake? For this reason alone, I will pass on adding this blu ray dvd to my ballet collection. I'll wait until another company will record a performance in high def. I hope it will happen in this century.

This piece of garbage makes early John Waters films look like masterpieces.
Towards the end Anna Nicole's character leaves the scene to go relief herself
while the other two "Meryl Streeps" contine talking. What follows is an array
of loud flatulence sounds. Hilarious. This is the only two minutes worth
watching on this "film". OOPS! Meant to say filth.

3.0 out of 5 stars A severe case of miscasting!, April 28, 2009
This review is from: Center Stage: Turn It Up (DVD)
Although I enjoyed the film's storyline(or re-hashed story line?)I found
some of the casting decision a bit, no, very insulting. Rachele Brooke
Smith may be a good actress on the rise(I hope)but has zero ballet body
requisites: her feet barely arch while on toe shoes, her knees don't straightem and lacks a decent natural line doing arabesques. The blond
actress playing her rival (good performance!)doesn't have the long legged
perfect body for ballet that we see on stages today(even in the chorus, or
corp de ballet members)My question is: Could they not find perfect or close to perfect real ballet dancers(or even advanced students)to play
those parts?. Don't they realize that a lot of the viewers of the film may
have some basic ballet knowledge?. As for the hip hop dance sequences I've
seen better in the local tv channels amateur competitions. Is that why
the scenes in the club were so poorly lighted?.

Everything I wanted to say to praise this film is already been written.
I just want to add: Should we change the name of the movie to The Meeting
Venus Massacre and insert a scene with Britney Spears singing Un Bel Di
with a disco beat?. You would find the widescreen special edition dvd
in the stores in a few days. How Sad.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy seeing a kitten getting killed, October 20, 2007
I saw this pretentious piece of garbage in the 80's in the Z channel. Not
even the nudity and the graphic scene of two young boys fondling their
penises to compare their foreskins makes it worthwhile to witness the
smashing of a ginger kitten done by Donald Sutherland's head toward the
end. I hated this clown face actor ever since and have had to put up
with him in some movies because I wanted to see these movie because of
their stories (Six Degrees of Separation,Invasion of the Body Snatchers
to name two). Sinor Bertolucci repeated this trend in a scene of The
Last Emperor where a disturbed young emperor throws a mouse into a wall
to kill it. You can see the blood left on the wall from the poor animal.
Good work sinor famous director, why don't you make a movie about the
cruel, barbaric art of bullfighting?. By the way, meant to use no stars
but it seems is the only way to post my review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed greatly! But as usual, there are flaws., November 12, 2006
This review is from: The Butcher's Wife (DVD)
Is there a rule in Hollywood that no movie can be almost perfect or better

yet, perfect? No.1:As much as I like Demi,I don't think she was the best

choice for this role. So what do they do? Color her hair blonde with the

spaghetti curls. This touch didn't help her interpretation of the role any. But she has her moments. No.2: As for her character, a clairvoyant

with a heart of gold I found it too far fetched that she would fall for a

man making a living selling the flesh of innocent animals. I wished the

story would have been called "The Baker's Wife". It would have given the

story more special moments since the bakery would be selling birthday, wedding cakes, etc. The supporting cast was wonderful. Nothing but great actors here. I think I will file this dvd in my "reference section" area.

That's where I keep movies with actors I greatly admire but the movie has

serious flaws.
