Sanity, Insanity and Common Sense
Sanity, Insanity and Common Sense

4.0 out of 5 stars The first book about the Three Principles, November 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is, as far as I know, the first attempt to describe the Three Principles for a professional audience, and as such is a fascinating glimpse at how the earliest practitioners to learn from Syd Banks' teachings and epiphany tried to explain what they had come to know...

It's quite readable and it makes a lot of sense. It suffers a little from making things more complicated than they have to be, and it does not describe the Three Principles in ways that people introduced to them more recently would recognize.

Still, it's an early, enjoyable and very readable introduction to the common sense of mental health, and well worth having in one's library. It's

5.0 out of 5 stars For the dollar? They're awesome., April 30, 2014

These are not sizzle-and-boom phones. Their sound is smooth, with wide range and good impact. They're surprisingly tough, and surprisingly comfortable. I used a pair for walking to work for about two years before they died on me, and that's through low temperatures, rain, snow and sun. I bought a pair for my son, and a second for me and they're still going strong. The sound is excellent. Hard to argue with. Great for when you don't want to have clunkier headphones ons.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid offering, April 30, 2014

The comparison of two vehicles that did double duty as tank destroyers and as self propelled infantry support guns, each taking on a role for which it was not intended, is an intriguing one. And Steven Zaloga is one of the best writers contributing to the series, if not the best.

This is a good read, with good color plates and diagrams.

The OontZ Ultra-Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker by Cambridge SoundWorks
The OontZ Ultra-Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker by Cambridge SoundWorks

5.0 out of 5 stars Within its limitations, it's terrific..., April 30, 2014

Among their other historical achievements, Cambridge Soundworks are among the pioneers of repurposing really good tweeters. An Oontz is, in essence, a pair of clear, low distortion tweeters mounted in a small enclosure with a small passive radiator and an amp with rechargeable battery. The passive radiator warms the sound up nicely. It's not going to power a party, in my view, but plug one into a laptop or iPod/iPad and it will flesh out and warm up the sound from the tiny little speakers that are built in, and eliminate harshness and listening fatigue.

I think some of the people who say it doesn't get loud enough may forget about the gain staging in a laptop. In a MacBook, for instance, you need to adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume in iTunes, the volume at the top of the screen, and often the volume in things like YouTube...PLUS, you have to remember each time you turn on the Oontz to adjust its volume up. If you do all that, there is probably more volume available than you really want from a tiny Bluetooth speaker.

I do wish it had some way of indicating when it's charged, but once charged it will give you a good long day's listening without dying. I have yet to have it stop on me during a long workday, and it's easy enough to charge it up overnight.

For about fifty dollars, which is about what I paid for it, it's a very solid deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain on Kindle, April 30, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A good thirty dollar "coffee table book" on the Panther tank, including excellent color photographs, for a quarter of the price on Kindle is a bargain. Absolutely worth the bit over seven dollars that it cost.

The writing is clear, the photos are great, and the history is balanced and accurate. Looks great on my Kindle Paperwhite, but awesome on the Kindle app on my iPad.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent overview, April 30, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As far as I can tell, the most satisfying among the Duel books are the ones in which actual weapon vs. weapon clashes are documented, preferably more than one. The trouble is, in some cases, there isn't a lot of documentation of such clashes on the level of tank vs. tank or plane vs plane.

This volume does a good job with what were probably sparse pickings. The writing is clear, the artwork is good, and the descriptions of the two AFVs are clear and instructive. The actual battling is pretty sparse. That doesn't make it a bad book; there apparently isn't a lot of Jagdpanther literature/history out there. If you know that ahead of time, you won't be disappointed.

The Dhammapada (Classics of Indian Spirituality)
The Dhammapada (Classics of Indian Spirituality)
Price: $6.15

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, understandable, accessible, April 22, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Eknath Easwarn has done an excellent job of rendering the Dhammapad into clear prose, with introductions to each section that illuminate and inform rather than contribute an academic haze. Easy to read, and easy to get something out of, and an excellent introduction to the beginnings of Buddhist thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it and reflect, January 29, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The first time I read this book, years ago, I was disappointed. I 'understood' it but wasn't touched.

Recently I purchased it for the Kindle I got for Christmas, and re-read it. On this occasion, with a quieter mind and some time to take it in, I was surprised and pleased at its warm simplicity and touched by its good-hearted good sense.

Since then, I've been recommending it and using it in my practice, and I find that I am enjoying having it on the Kindle for further reflection. The chapters are short, and I enjoy reading one from time to time to reground me in keeping things simple.
