5.0 out of 5 stars Not only rigorous writting, but enjoyable reading, too!, May 28, 2014

The late Roman Empire is hard to write about. Not many sources, and the few are unreliable. But Ian Hughes does a wonderful job in bringing back the times of Aetius and Attila. I was most pleasantly surprised to find historically plausible hypothesis about very important events that are viewed, even today, with an aura of mysticism. The encounter of Pope Leo with Attila that saved Rome, for instance, is told and explained in a most sober and down-to-earth way.

After Reading this book, one is left with thist for knowing more about outstanding people like Galla Placidia, Emperor Marcian, Attila the Hun, Gaiseric the Vandal and many others.

This book is not only an enjoable reading about the history of Russia, but it also teaches a lot about the history of history writting! I remember my first book of world history, which was written in the early 30's, and there were lots of moral judgements about the times and the characters. "The Empire of Russia" is a lot like this old Brazilian text. With that in mind, I recommend this book to history buffs and curious minds. The author seems to be a devout christian. Read it if you don't mind texts like

"The Scythians were as ferociuos a race as earth has ever known. They drank the blood of their enemies (...) in the ferocity of their assaults they were as insensible to death as wild beasts could be."

or

"Then taking from his bosom a copy of the New Testament, he read to the king those divinely-inspired precepts which are alike applicable to monarchs and peasants (...) and urged the king to follow these sacred lessons."

This kindle edition is OK. And again: it is a good reading! A 150 years old book about history that deserves another edition IS history in itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars I would have liked it, but could not read it on my Kindle., January 29, 2014

I knew that it would not have panel view, but I hoped at last to be able to zoom the page enough to reed, but my old and faithful b&w 6" kindle, the most zoom it could deliver was a kind of "fit to page", and from there, no more zooming. I had to return it for refund. I bought the "SLAVE GIRL COMICS NUMBER 2", and this one has panel view!

5.0 out of 5 stars Multiplayer Fun, March 25, 2008
I am not the lone gamer, so I value most the games that you can play with family and friends. That said, IMO Raving Rabbids 1 and 2 are the best games available for the Wii, together with Mario Party and Mario Strikers. We laugh at each other, young and old alike, and have a good time together.

Raving Rabbids 1 is more linear, there is a definite story and you will unlock the minigames one after another. The greater part of the minigames are turn based, so we don't play together. OK, it is not so much multiplayer. Raving Rabbids 2, on the contrary, is not too linear, you can unlock all the minigames in a couple of sessions, and the greater part of those are really multiplayer.

Other differences between RR1 & RR2: both have music minigames, where you must shake the controllers according to the rhythm. The songs in RR1 are somewhat better, although both soundtracks are great. In RR1, two can play in a split screen. In RR2, up to four can play together in a single screen, each player assigned to a instrument or vocals. If you play poorly, the sound of your instrument will fade.

The rail shooters are superb in RR1, and good in RR2.

In both games, the bunnies are very funny. No other game in any other platform has made me laugh so much as these RR1 & RR2. In this aspect, both are equal. Five/Five Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading, great viewing, July 24, 2006

I prefer photographs (or images made from spacecraft) over paintings, and I bought this book to raise my kids' interest in space. Well, it was my prejudice. The book has loads of the newest images, including some from the Cassini-Huygens mission, and the paintings are great, in the sense that they are not fantasy, but "down-to-earth" renderings of wiews we could have if we were there. Much better than I expected. And it is not only the images. Great text, great reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Archaeology, October 17, 2002
This is the closest we can get to musical archaeology. The Muzsikas Ensemble did a marvelous work, researching the remnants of a dead culture. But, even if you consider its musical quality only, this record still stands on highest ground. The music, rhythm, the voice of Marta Sebestyen... This is the kind of CD you'll like the first time you hear. I do highly recommend it.
(And yes, the theme of 'The English Patient' is there also. It is an old Yiddish prayer).

5.0 out of 5 stars I have to see it three times a day, March 28, 2001

Now, there's a video the kids won't quit seeing through and through. I have two little boys, 2yrs and 3yrs. Both are enthralled by this video. It is presented by three kids who actually fly in the planes and helicopters. The edition is OK and that is important to me. In other films of the kind, there are so many cuts that you can't see a scene for more then 10 seconds. And with this frenetic cutting you cannot interact with the kids seeing the film. In this 'airplanes A to Z' you have lots of time to comment, explain and ask question to the youngins.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too many cuts, March 26, 2001
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was expecting a video with lots of trains to see and talk about with my kids. This one has lots of trains, as seen in the title, but no train shows for more than some seconds. You can't see one cargo train in its entirety, you can't count the wagons, or even see some weird cargoes. I would rate it a mere two stars. But then there are the kids. One is 2 yrs and the other, 3yrs. Both loved it, and want to see it over and over. I'm sure they would rate if five stars. And they would love it even more if dad could interact with them. But the succession of trains is frenetic, you can't even comment anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars A non-hollywoodian gender twist, February 16, 2001
This review is from: Chicken Run [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The most interesting feature about this film is that, unlike "Indiana Jones" hollywood gender roles, the hero is a female (a hen, it's true, but female anyway). Instead of the male hero conquering the heart of the passive maiden, here the all the action and brave deeds are done by the hen Ginger, and the rooster Rocky plays the role of the handsome and (only a bit more than) passive character. It was great to see it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even grownups can play and win sometimes, January 5, 2001
This review is from: Wacky Races (Video Game)
It was a very good idea to borrow the hanna barbera characters to a racing videogame. Each competitor has its own "personality". The game is somewhat easy to play, and is a hit with the younger. It is darn fun to bomb, fire or freeze the car running ahead. Older teens will possibly enjoy more realistic racing games, but for those 6 to 12 years old I can't think of a better racing game.
