5.0 out of 5 stars First GIS Book, April 15, 2009
This book was my introduction to the world of GIS and it did so very well. Concise and exact instructions that do not miss a step; explainations and examples go a long way to understand the software product. This is definitely the best book for use in a GIS class.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated, April 15, 2009
This is an interesting look at the state of Geography in the 1980s. Unfortunately, I am struggling to get past the 3rd chapter. The writer has a tendancy to drone on and ramble around the point, but seems to present a fairly accurate depcition of life in those times, with some interesting revelations towards todays time.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible documentation, April 15, 2009
I used this book for an advanced GIS class, and was wholly disappointed in it. The overviews are vague at best, and the step-by-step instructions were obviously not written by someone that knows how to write that sort of thing. Additionally, the video examples are waste of effort. Instructors considering this book should look elsewhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn how to make a map lie!, April 15, 2009
The title is not deceiving at all. This book walks you through the most common cartographic deceptions, and provides some excellent color guides. If you want to learn how to make influential maps for a cause, this is the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting!, April 15, 2009
This is an interesting look in to the historical application of GIS, and gives some very excellent examples; specifically, the witch trials of New England.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dry Law, April 15, 2009
While I appreciate that Land Use is very LAW oriented, a little more time could have been spent on developing the guiding principles of these laws, rather than just stating them and talking about how just the decisions were (when some were not at all!)

However, it would definitely be a good book for someone looking for a way to protect themselves from the illegitimate excercises and outright stupidity that Land Use Planning has become.
