5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book. Very thorough without being absurdly technical, November 29, 2015

Fantastic book. Very thorough without being absurdly technical; superb photography and histo samples. Very readable, overall. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good overview of pulmonary pathologies.

1.0 out of 5 stars a very expensive fan, NOT an air conditioner, July 13, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
a $350 fan....and not even a very good fan.

i could not be more unhappy with this thing. i was already nervous about buying a portable A/C and this sucker fulfilled about every fear I had: way too heavy, way too loud, and it STILL doesn't cool worth a damn. My apartment is even hotter than before because I have to close all the windows in order to give this feeble machination a chance to do......well, to do NOTHING, apparently.

i'd return it if it weren't such a PITA to move.

5.0 out of 5 stars great great great great, June 30, 2011

is it a book that you can read thru and ace your neuroscience exam? hell no. is it a book that will make you understand WHY you're taking neuroscience? definitely

how i used this book: went to lecture, learned everything from the powerpoints/course texts like usual, then i spent the last 48 hrs using this book and PreTest: Neuro so that I could get the clinical feel for the subject. worked great for me. i ended up blowing the NBME shelf exam out of the water and i totally credit this book for it. it teaches you all of the subjective clinical aspects to neurology that are high-yield on USMLE type of stuff

"a 22 yr old female comes to you complaining of developing vision deficits. upon examination, she has difficulty tracking an object L to R, but convergence is normal...."

5.0 out of 5 stars great companion text for medical physiology, June 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
i tended to read thru the pertinent chapters from this text before i started a new unit in medical physio and found it immensely helpful. helps you weed out which formulae/schematics/etc are really important and which ones no MD would ever care to know.

obviously it won't be super heavy on clinical correlates or anything, but that's a minor issue with a course like physiology. EVERYTHING relates clinically

there's a reason why all the M2s and M3s told me to get this book. now i understand.

2.0 out of 5 stars meh, June 30, 2011

decent book that covers the essentials, but it gets VERY technical at times (there were pages and pages of crap about ion channels that USMLE will never care about). also, i found it a little light on clinical vignettes and such. only chapter(s) i found moderately useful were the ones over hemodynamics/blood viscosity/etc. Oh, and if you REALLY wanna get frustrated, try learning about ECGs from this book...

this is one of those "can't see the forest because of all of the damned trees" textbooks. i'd avoid it, personally

5.0 out of 5 stars love love love this resource, June 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
used this for my first-year medical physiology class and got a ton out of it. read it cover-to-cover in about 2 days, stayed awake thru it, understood everything, and did fantastic on our professor's exam. i found it very readable with linear reasoning and all the other goodies (schematics, vignettes, etc) that make for a good textbook (as opposed to a reference book). i will never have trouble remembering all about addison's and cushing's after this

it might be a little too in-depth for Step 1 review, but with how fast i was able to read thru it, i'm def gonna keep it in case i want a solid refresher next year

can't recommend this book enough. i'm a believer in the whole Mosby series after using this one

5.0 out of 5 stars solid choice for a wool blanket, June 30, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
soft, HUGE, just plush enough, quality stitching, not itchy

i was a little worried about how much it was shedding when i first got it, but i washed/dried it (on cool) three or four times before using it, and it's been great ever since. i also didn't have any issues with a chemical odor or anything

i might buy another one at some point when i have need for another wool blanket
