5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible book for both children and adults, November 22, 2002
Marguerite Henry was, in my opinion, one of the greatest children's authors. Once again, with San Domingo, she creates a winner.
San Domingo is an exceptional horse, blessed with the medicine hat, considered sacred by Native Americans. He proves himself in the end of the book. There is a sad ending, but I think that even small children would be fine reading this book.

This is one of Hitchcock's earliest films. It is a silent film, so if you do not enjoy silent films I would give this a pass.
The movie tells the story of a "notorious" woman, blamed for her lover's suicide, and divorced, amid great scandal, by her husband.
She heads to the south of France to recover, and meets a young man, who she promptly falls in love with and marries.
Everything is fine till the return to England, where she meets the in-laws. Her mother in law takes an instant dislike to her new daughter in law. All hell breaks loose when the truth about the past comes out. The movie finishes with a second divorce, and the lead actress distraught on the court steps.
Isabel Jeans plays a sympathetic character, put upon by all around her. There are few other such characters in this movie. The mother in law is frankly unlikable. The old husband is an abusive drunk. The new husband is a weak willed wimp. By the end of the movie you feel quite sorry for Ms. Jean's character.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Number Seventeen [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I liked this film. While there are some weakness, particularly the final chase scene which was obviously a train set, overall the movie is quite good.
The story focuses around a stolen necklace, and a series of colourful characters, including a cockney who was a scene stealer, a deaf mute woman, a rather nosy lead actor and a number of "bad guys". Well worth watching, particularly if you keep in mind that this film is over 70 years old, and still holds its own

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a look, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Blackmail [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie was one of the first Hitchcock movies I ever saw, and it made me want to see more. It was the first "talkie" filmed in Britain, and the lead actress, Anny Ondra, had to be dubbed due to her thick accent.
Ondra stands out to me, she is a delight as the blackmailed young lady. It is a pity that she was not used again by Hitchcock.

3.0 out of 5 stars A so-so movie from Hitchcock, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Secret Agent [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have to say, I didn't really enjoy this movie. I would recommend renting it before considering purchasing it.
I found there to be very little chemistry between Gielgud and Carrol, and Peter Lorre seems determined to steal every scene he is in. The story was a bit thin as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing., November 22, 2002

This movie, apparantly loosely based on Hitchcock's marriage, was a real treat. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
Joan Barry is particularly lovely, and you may wonder why she puts up with her husband's rather shabby treatment of her.
The story doesn't end happily, in fact we are back where we started, having learned nothing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing, November 22, 2002
This review is from: The Lodger [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan, and I also enjoy older movies. I found this movie to be very enjoyable, with a good story line, and some rather interesting camera work. The plot was easy to follow, even though there was no dialogue.
My favorite character was the unnamed lodger, the hysteria he creates felt real.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't enjoy silent films, but if you can look past that, this is a movie well worth seeing.

1.0 out of 5 stars A sad waste of Grace Kelly's talent, November 3, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Green Fire [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have seen all of Grace Kelly's movies, and this one stands out as by far the least appealing.
Grace's talents are wasted in the silly movie. Grace plays a lonely coffee plantation owner who meets Stewart Granger, a thoroughly awful cad, and we are supposed to believe that the two fall in love, even though there is zero chemistry between them.
Ms Kelly herself has stated publically her great dislike of this film, and I for one agree with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply unforgettable, October 28, 2002

This book tells the amazing true story of a doomed expedition to the Arctic.
There is much to recommend about this book, throughout you wonder why anyone would ever venture north again after all the suffering that the crew of this ship endured.
There are a number of different stories being told in this book, including a murder mystery, a missing crew and a harrowing journey to rescue.
The ending actually left me tingling!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new point of view for a familiar story, October 28, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I really enjoyed this book. Throughout the book, you learn about the men on the Endurance, what their characters were like, and what life was like on the ship, all from the point of view of a cat.
Of course, the ending is sad, but Caroline Alexander does not dwell on the details of Mrs Chippy's demise.
This story will appeal to many, animal lovers like myself, history buffs, and anyone interested in seeing how man handles himself in times of great stress.
