5.0 out of 5 stars Four out of five Byrds do it again., December 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is surely an essential record to have for BYRD maniacs. Four of the five original Byrds reunite for one last time. I believe they did reunite when they were inducted in the R & R hall of Fame, but this is the last time they played both solo and Byrd music. Essentially, this might have been the formation of McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman. It comes via a radio broadcast from 1979. M,C, &H released their first Capital record in 1980, so this may have been a prelude.Clark,Hillman and McGuinn each perform solo pieces then start doing Byrds tunes. A lot of the Byrd tunes like Chestnut Mare did not have any original Byrds but McGuinn on them. But the X Byrds rise to the occasion and help Roger through these songs.David Crosby joins them on most of the songs they sing together, but does not sing any lead vocals. Missing is Drummer Michael Clarke. Still four out of five ain't bad. Another oddity is that McGuinn,Clark, and Hillman rotate on lead vocal for the full Dylan version of Mr. Tambourine man. This is odd in that only McGuinn and Crosby sang on the original recording. So this the only way you will hear all the Byrd vocalists do Mr, Tambourine Man.
With the two Clarks gone, you realize, this music will never get this treatment again. So go for it. Gene Clark's two solo songs suffer from a quiet vocal over his guitar. Otherwise, quality is good in the recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Audio Hula Hoop., December 23, 2014

this might be the holy grail as far as Terry Riley goes. This was previously available on a 2 disc vinyl. The sound on the vinyl was rather weak, and noisy, This CD still is not as crisp as the Prophets record, but I like this music more. Terry gets into a groove and keeps it there. He also uses a digital delay to render the sound as spacey .This is his best minimal work. If you ever wondered what an audio hula hoop sounds like, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite string records., December 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This record came as a surprise. I do not always like classical music. String quartets are of limited interest to me. Well,This is an excellent record. I might even go as far as saying it if the best string record since Bernard Hermann passed away. The four string musicians play complex intertwined lines on their instruments. This continues on for 2 cds with various ups and downs in the music. Those who love the sound of violins, viola, and cello will want this one for its unique sound, at least I hope so.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different style of Piano playing., December 23, 2014

This is a live piano concert recording. Terry performs alone on piano on this recording from 1995. This is the closest I have heard him come to jazz. He pulls all kinds of patterns out on this release. Apparently, Jazz was a primary interest to Terry before he met La Monte Young and became a minimalist composer. So this might be a good starter for jazzers trying to make the leap over to new classical music. Those wishing to hear a more modern approach to piano, might like this as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guitar textures prevail ., December 23, 2014

This is a lot more structured than other Riley compositions. Two guitar players(acoustic guitars) a violinist, and percussionist play the music here. With the marimba being present on some tracks, this music reminded me of Decals era Captain Beefhart. There are no vocals here, just adventurous performing on instruments. His son Gyan Riley is one of the guitar players performing. The guitar dominates all the tracks, though some excellent violin work is given by Tracy Silverman. This is beyond the label Minimalism, and ventures in territories normally associated with Jazz and 20th century classical. As far as Riley fans go, expect the unexpected.
This is recommended for listeners of adventurous music

5.0 out of 5 stars Voice of three Prophets, one is human., December 23, 2014

I had these two releases when they were on Vinyl. Now you can get two re releases on 1 2CD set. Disc one is Descending Moonshine Dervishes.Terry performs on an electric organ modified to be in Just intonation tuning. He maintains rhythmic cycles as he travels his hypnotic path. Disc Two is unique because he plays a Prophet 10 synthesizer, actually 2 of them. The sounds are different than the voicing s for Organs. This disc was recorded live. The Prophet was a new instrument when this was recorded. So Terry is working with textures few classical players were willing to embrace. There seems to be a play on words here. While the instrument is called a prophet, he sings on this recording in a Hindu type tonality. Perhaps he is being a prophet as well. I must admit, Terry's voice is my least favorite of his talents. However, I am willing to bear with his voice just to hear how he plays electronic keyboards. The structure and feel have overshadowed a less than gracious voice. Fans of his other keyboard work will rejoice at these tracks. Just be forwarned, his singing is not for those addicted to melodies.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bath of SAX, December 23, 2014

I like almost anything by Terry Riley, but some releases are better than others. This music is performed by the Rova Saxophone Quartet. This group has recorded on the infamous ECM label. The Saxophone lines from each player intertwine to create a textural saxaphone tapestry. The lines are not as repetitive as on previous Riley works. More dynamics are employed, as well as staccato and sustained notes. If you wish to amerce yourself in the kinetic sound of Saxophones, this might be your ticket.

1.0 out of 5 stars Scam from CBS and Amazon, September 21, 2014

I would love to write a review of this episode, but after jumping through a zillion hoops to get it, it will not play on my computer. I was told I had to load Silverfire. So I did. Guess what nothing happened when I hit play. I write this review so others will not be sucked into this scam. They tell you to buy it, then it will not play.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Saint vs Satan., September 10, 2014
I have been a admirer of Luis Bunuel films since the 1970s. this is probably in my top five of all his films. Simon is a saintly figure who lives a top a pillar in the desert. He is newly moved to an even higher pillar where he is exalted by local people looking to him for guidance and miracles.A man with no hands prays to Simon for new hands. Simon prays to the lord, and suddenly the guy has hands. As soon as he gets his miracle hands, he proceeds to shove his children around.Piety in a world of retched people seems to be a Bunuel theme.Simon is tempted by the devil who appears in the form of a voluptuous woman played by Silvia Pinal (one of Bunuel's favorite actresses). Guess what?the devil eventually brings Simon down to earth, and the present. Only Silvia Pinal could pull it off.
When I saw this in a theater, the subtitles were almost unreadable because they were white on a B&W film. The new tiles are yellow with black edges and standout against the rest of the film. This is a short film, but other extra features including cast interviews are included to make this a full night of entertainment. Recommended to fans of Bunuel and black comedy and satire.

It was cheaper than other rings I have. This probably is not silver otherwise it would cost more. The etching along it gives it a classier look than if it had been left plain. It is larger than other rings I have purchased . So overall it was a good value for the money. This is an ornate yet mystical piece of jewelry which I will wear often.
