5.0 out of 5 stars Making a Difference with Caring Carmin, August 23, 2014
Peanut, the dog, accompanies his owner Carmin to the park where they enjoy the sunshine, equipment, other children and nature until Carmin steps into some gum. Yuk! Why would anyone despoil a pretty park with trash? What to do? Suddenly an idea pops into Carmin's head on what SHE can do to promote a clean park. This short, colorful and rhyming book for young children teaches the power of ideas and action. We can make a difference and Carmin does. At the end of the story, children are invited to think about what they care about and how they could help to keep the earth beautiful. This is an upbeat and positive book with diverse characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Riveting IF You Fall Under the Spell of Its Characters, August 23, 2014
If you fall under the spell of the characters in this Forsyte Saga, you will find this series fairly riveting. The Forsyte family and their relationships and lives is the focus here. They are living at the end of the Victorian era and the dawning of the Edwardian era in London and its environs. There is family intrigue anchored by the main plot in which solicitor Soames Forsyte (Damian Lewis) marries a poorer young woman, Irene Heron (Gine McKee) in an unfortunate mismatch. Soames seems to want to acquire a wife the way in which he would acquire property, as a legal and business proposition without much emotion. Adultery ensues which is frowned upon in the Victorian Age.

Other family members have their own little drama - Winnifred Forsyte also made an unfortunate mismatch with one of the more eccentric, despicable and entertaining members of the cast, Montague Dartie (Ben Miles), who is a relentless bounder and also dabbles in adultery. He gets some of the best lines. Seeing him demonstrating a tango with one of his male friends is one of the more humorous scenes in this otherwise mostly dramatic and serious drama.

Damien Soames is obsessed with winning control of Irene and producing a male heir to carry on the Forsyte name. How he deals with his doomed desire, and how it impacts others' lives, knits the story together. Really enjoyed the character young Jolyon (Rupert Graves - who plays a detective in the current SHERLOCK series) who is a cousin of Soames and quite different from him. The dialogue is interesting, and the sets of these Victorian backgrounds you want to stop the scene and just look at the rooms. Found this a thoroughly engaging series so far that only gets better. On to Series 2....

I always loved the scent and texture of the shampoo my hair dresser used and realized it was this Nexxus Ultimate Moisturizing Shampoo. It has a healthy coconut scent and a luxurious texture. Your hair dries clean and soft. It's easy to use and to travel with. I wash my hair about every day so wanted something which wasn't too harsh. The extra moisturizing helps! 5.0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, August 21, 2014
What do you do when you are lonely or upset? That is the question this colorful, rhyming and whimsical story features with Lulu who loves to love her family. But they are not in the room and she's feeling sad. Something a bit magical happens and distracts Lulu. Suddenly her family appears and there's a family hug. This book is perfect for children who might deal with separation anxiety or get fearful when family aren't around. Teaching children resiliency - how to deal with sadness and fear - in positive ways is helpful. This book can be a conversation spark to do so. It's short and sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Natural and Sparkling, August 21, 2014
My son and his wife served these at his wedding and they are delicious. They are all natural fruit drink with effervescence. I like this clementine flavor - it's a fresh, light citrus flavor. It has 19g of natural fruit sugar per serving, so you may want to mix it with seltzer if you are watching your sugar intake. It's a light, healthy beverage which will appeal to many.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is Data the New Oil?, August 20, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Is data the new oil?

And what about visualizing data?

Consider the implications of these statistics on data, and the power of visuals, as stated in this book:

* Those companies that use dataviz report revenue growth over 5%

* Only 12% of information management professionals are doing big data

* The companies which are employing big data successfully: Amazon, Netflix, Google

* 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated per day

* We are exposed to more information in a day than our ancestors encountered in a lifetime

* Regarding visuals, the very visually-oriented Pinterest (of which I have 25,000 followers so can attest to its allure) is worth $3.5 billion even though it has no real business plan

* Old standbys of spread sheets can't cope with the current data deluge

If you are wondering what data visualization, or dataviz, is author Phil Simon defines it as the "practice of representing data through visual and often interactive means." The goal of dataviz is not only to communicate information, it also helps users to ask better questions, get better answers, make predictions and create a shared understanding which helps to align action by those who view it.

Look, I'm a humanities major, and don't know what an API, or a tree map or choropleths (nor does spell check here) are which are mentioned several times in this book. You hear the expression "big data" used more frequently and it sounds like a big deal so wanted to read about it. I also read this book because on the career assessment I did with my 20-something son, he indicated he has a good visual aptitude and memory, he loves strategy, enjoys math, reads statistics for fun, and he was considering getting an MBA. He is in the video game industry, and has a business degree from NYU. As I have unemployed friends with MBA's, thought that this data visualization field might be worth exploring for folks like my son who like design, numbers, strategy, statistics, technology etc. If that is you, or someone you know, Simon tells us there's a shortage, or talent gap, of dataviz specialists. There are some great data visualization degree programs around the country including ones offered by Stanford and Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, near NYC where my son lives. This book convinced me that folks like my son should explore the field.

Even with my low-tech knowledge, I was able to understand about 90% of this book and enjoyed reading it. Simon writes about dataviz in a lively, colorful and droll style. When you consider that data isn't ever going to decrease, it is obvious the field of dataviz will only increase in importance. Simon makes the case - using examples of Netflix, Ebay, Zappos, the University of Texas - that discoveries from Big Data can represent a huge competitive advantage.

This insight reminded me of an operations book I read recently by an M.I.T. professor and researcher in which she found that companies which used operations strengths (often realized through mining data) to minimize costs and increase profits enabled them to pay their employees a living wage which led to a virtuous cycle of happier and healthier employees, less turnover, higher profits, and more satisfied customers etc. Think Costco.

Dataviz is clearly only in its infancy, states Simon, and is a field about which we will be hearing much more in coming years. This is an entertaining and informative introduction to the field for novices. For those in the field already, it offers an up-to-date analysis and predictions of coming trends which should fascinate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healthy, Natural and Delicious ~ Low-Calorie, Too!, August 19, 2014
A nutritionist recommended Kashi chocolate and almond granola bars to me. I used to think you shouldn't eat chocolate when you're dieting or trying to eat healthy. Not true! Research shows a bit of dark chocolate everyday is good for your heart. It's hard to believe these delicious bars are that good for you! They taste a tad sinful, but are only 140 calories. When you are craving chocolate or something sweet (like a dessert), these are a great alternative. You don't need to feel deprived when you are dieting with these bars. Desserts taste good, but often have you feeling like you ate something not good for you. You feel heavy afterwards. These bars won't leave your stomach feeling that way.

They have 6g of protein, 160mg ALA Omega-3, are 16% of your fiber, fairly low in sugar at 7g - the nutritionist said try to stay under 8g for cereal- and low in sodium at 5% of your DV, They are also low in fat at 6% DV. It's amazing something so tasty is this healthy. They are naturally sweetened with rich dark chocolate, wildflower honey with NO high fructose corn syrup. They have 7 whole grains and chia. The 6g of protein come from whole almonds and crispy soy grahams. They have a touch of sea salt.

These are my favorite kashi bars. I love to put a couple in my purse when running errands or going to a meeting. They are a healthy and surprising delicious snack during the day. You can really taste the big squares of dark chocolate, the almonds and the touch of sea salt - a mouth-watering mix. Congratulations to Kashi for creating something this delicious which is so healthy.
