Everybody Sleeps (But Not Fred)
Everybody Sleeps (But Not Fred)
by Josh Schneider
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $12.71
57 used & new from $8.22

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't Sleep?, September 3, 2015
In this book you will see lots of animals sleeping, but not Fred. Fred has a to-do list which includes playing a big horn, breaking a world shouting record and karate chopping a table. Not sure we want to encourage the last two of those on children's to-do lists. Fred looked like a little man to me rather than a child. This is an imaginative book good for kids with a quirky sense of humor. 3.5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Dad's First Day School Jitters, September 3, 2015
This review is from: Dad's First Day (Hardcover)
This is a great book for preschool, kindergarten and first grade students facing their first days at school. In this story Oliver and his dad enjoy their summer together. When the first day of school arrives, guess who is nervous. Hint: it's not Oliver. It's dad. Dad has a tummy ache, dad doesn't get ready on time, dad drives slowly to school, dad won't leave the classroom and Oliver's teacher has to carry Dad out!

At home, Dad is sad without Oliver. And rushes back to school early but sees something that makes him realize Oliver's right place is at school. This book allows both children and parents to talk about first-day jitters in a safe and humorous way. The illustrations are happy and colorful (like the cover), and this would be a good book for families, classroom teachers and librarians to share.

A classroom could draw a picture afterwards of what they enjoyed most about their first day or week of school.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lively, Bright & Plausible, September 3, 2015
This is a a lively and plausible account of how a young woman became Sherlock Holmes' apprentice and solved cases with him in his later years. Mary Russell is a bright orphan teen who meets Holmes and is mentored by him. He sees her promise - she is much sharper than beloved Dr. Watson, apparently, and is able to keep up with Holmes and win his respect.

They solve increasingly more complex cases together. The author is very bright and well-traveled and it seeps into her writing. Our library mystery group is reading this book this month. Will report back on how the group liked it as a monthly book selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not High in Sugar - Tasty, September 2, 2015
Used these Ghiradelli semi-sweet baking chips for the first time. They are delicious. I baked them in a skinny chocolate banana muffins with NO sugar. The recipe calls for honey and cocoa. There are 70 calories in a 32 chips serving of Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips. There are a low 8g of sugar in 32 chips which is fairly low. A nutritionist said try to stay below 7-8g in a bowl of cereal so 8g for chocolate chips is like cereal. A cup of milk has 12g of sugar. The World Health Organization says try to stay below 50g of added sugar a day, so 8g is about 1/6 of that.

So, if you are watching your sugar and calorie intake, putting these in something healthy like banana muffins or yogurt isn't too decadent and won't ruin you diet for an occasional treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healthy Popcorn Chip, August 31, 2015
Sometimes you want sweet, sometimes you want salty. Sometimes you want a chip and sometimes popcorn sounds tasty. This Popcorners Kettle Popped Corn Chips combine all four wants into one light chip with great texture. The texture is kind of a bubbly, quilted texture which enhances the chips' appeal.

The kettle flavor is just the right amount of sweetness to me so it's not overpowering, yet you can taste a bit of saltiness, too. And the chips are fairly healthy, as they are lowfat, low sugar and low salt.

Ingredients listed on bag: enriched Yellow Corn {Yellow Corn, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid}, Sunflower Oil, Sugar, Sea Salt. The oil used is a healthy oil and like the use of sea salt instead of regular salt.

These are air popped with real corn. One bag has 140 calories and is low sodium (110 mg or 5% DV) and low sugar (3g), so they are relatively guilt-free. There are no artificial additives or preservatives and they are gluten free. This kettle is one of my favorite flavors and the only sweet flavor they make. I like the sea salt, too which tastes like salted popcorn.

Great to serve at a party for something a little different.

Circling the Sun: A Novel
Circling the Sun: A Novel

5.0 out of 5 stars Kenya, the 1920's & an Unconventional Woman, August 30, 2015
If you have been wondering what talented author Paula McLain has been doing since publication of THE PARIS WIFE, you will find out she has been researching 1920's Kenya. In this novel, McLain writes with an authority about the age and the location which makes you experience it. That is one of the great charms of this book. Another is the character of Beryl Markham who seems ahead of her time. Due to her unusual upbringing in the Kenyan countryside, Beryl is a totally original character unconstrained by conventions about women at that time. Will be recommending this novel to our library fiction group as it takes us out of the west and back to the fascinating 1920's. Looking forward to who McLain will research and write about next as she has a talent for storytelling. 4.5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Less Calories Than Regular Mayo ~ Tastes Good, Too!, August 30, 2015
As olive oil is supposed to be healthy for you, we tried this olive oil mayonnaise. Love to roast chicken and make a chicken salad with this mayonnaise and a little onion, celery and spices to eat on a sandwich or on top of a green salad. Ingredients in this mayonnaise include: water, oils (soybean oil, extra virgin olive oil), vinegar, whole eggs and egg yolks, modified corn starch, sugar, salt, lemon juice, (sorbic acid, calcium disodium edta) used to protect quality, xanthan gum, citric acid, natural flavors, oleoresin paprika, beta-carotene (color). It is gluten-free. They say they use cage-free eggs.

One tablespoon is 60 calories, 9% of your total fat, 2% cholesterol, 5% of your sodium and no sugar. If you can keep to a tablespoon or two on a sandwich or in your chicken salad or egg salad serving, it's very tasty and won't ruin a diet. I like the faint taste of the olive oil and now buy this olive oil mayonnaise exclusively. If you like the taste of olive oil, you should enjoy this mayonnaise.

STUBB'S Spicy BBQ Sauce, 18-Ounce Bottle (Pack of 8)
STUBB'S Spicy BBQ Sauce, 18-Ounce Bottle (Pack of 8)

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy The Heat, August 30, 2015
Have been looking for BBQ sauces with NO HFCS and found this Stubbs brand. Have been sampling all of the Stubbs flavors and like this one. It tastes pretty hot as is. However, we put it on pulled pork tonight and the pork mitigated some of the heat. I think you'll find the intensity depends on what you put it on.

I like the original flavor the best, but this may be a close second. Ingredients include:

All-Natural Gluten Free Ingredients: Water, Tomato Paste, Sugar, Distilled Vinegar, Molasses, Tapioca Dextrin, Salt, Brown Sugar, Spices, Corn Starch, Habanero Peppers, contains less than 0.5% of: Onion, Paprika, Garlic, Chili Powder, Natural Smoke Flavor, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Corn Syrup, Tamarind, Natural Flavors.

I made turkey meatballs and dipped them in Stubb's BBQ sauce and they are delicious!

The Daughters of Cain
The Daughters of Cain

5.0 out of 5 stars A Murdered Don, August 30, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I always enjoy the Inspector Morse plots which involve Oxford University. In this mystery novel, an Oxford don is murdered, but we don't know why or by whom. In this novel, Morse is his usual brilliant, humorous and irascible self which is always entertaining and Lewis is brighter than he pretends to be. The women characters - or daughters of Cain - are quite sympathetic, and several are attractive, which causes Morse to get distracted. And adds to the juice of the story. You always wish he would connect with one - but there tends to be ardent longing, cross-star influences. Which keeps us fairly focused on the crime. This was more cohesive in plotting than some of the other Morse books I've read. It had a pleasing symmetry. I adore Morse so can't be objective.
